McBRIDE SCORES TWO, BUT STRANGE GOAL HELPS BROWN FORGE TIE

Nov. 16:A 190-foot shorthanded goal brought Brown University back into the game and sophomore goalie Dan Rosen made 44 saves as the Bears battled St. Lawrence to a 4-4 tie in an ECAC Hockey game at Appleton Arena Friday night.

Trailing 3-0 and being outshot by over a two-to-one margin by the Saints, Brown senior Jeff Prough picked up the puck at the side of the Brown cage with the Bears on a penalty kill and launched it toward the other end of the ice. The puck took a crazy hop right in front of Saint sophomore goaltender Alex Petizian and bounced past the goalie and into the net to give Brown a new life.

The Bears cut it to 3-2 with 14.7 seconds to go in the second period on a goal by Sean McMonagle, and while the Saints went up 4-2 on Brock McBride’s second of the night 3:22 into the third period, Brown scored two goals within 51 seconds right after the Saint goal to tie it up. Freshman David Brownschidle scored his first collegiate goal after his shot went off Petizian’s mask and over his shoulder inot the net at 3:49 and McGonagle scored his second of the night at 4:40 lifting a backhander under the crossbar after a failed Saint clear.

“Its certainly not the same feeling tonight as it was after the tie with Quinnipiac last weekend,” said Saint associate head coach Chris Wells, who was filling in for head coach Joe Marsh behind the bench on Friday. “You kind of feel you let a point get away after a game like that. We had our chances to put them away, but give Brown credit, their goalie made some big saves and they took advantage of a couple of opportunities right in front.”

Marsh was attending a fund-raiser for a friend who has Lou Gehrig’s disease in Lynnfield, MA on Friday and will be back behind the Saint bench on Saturday.

The Saints dominated the first period, outshooting Brown 15-4, and came out of it with a 1-0 lead when McBride scored his second of the season at the 15:34 mark. Kevin DeVergilio broke up a Brown pass in the Saint end and sent the puck ahead to defenseman Zach Miskovic. Miskovic hit McBride with a pass as McBride hopped off the bench and broke into the Brown end with a stride on the defense and his shot found the upper corner of the net to give the Saints the lead.

Sean Flanagan scored his first of the season on a power play rebound as he tucked the puck past Rosen from point blank range at 5:53 of the second after Rosen had kicked out Shawn Fensel’s shot from the point and DeVergilio scored his fourth of the year on a wrist shot inside the far post at 9:06 after a pretty pass by Zach Miskovic sent him into the Brown end to give the Saints their 3-0 lead.

The Saints had a couple of great scoring chances on the power play right before Prough’s clear which ended up in the net, and the Bears got a two-on-one in the final 15 seconds of the second period to cut the lead to 3-2.

“I think if we had buried one on the power play, or a couple of other chances we had, it would have been all over,” said Wells. “But the bad bounce for us on Prough’s clear was a good bounce for them and got them back into it.”

The Saints finished with a 48-27 edge in shots on goal as Rosen finished with 44 saves for the Bears and Petizian made 23 for the Saints.
