BAGNALL IS SAINT MVP, MCGEOUGH AND DOYLE AWARD WINNER

Senior defenseman Drew Bagnall was the winner of three awards at St. Lawrence University’s annual men’s hockey banquet Saturday night as the Friends of St. Lawrence Hockey honored the 2007 ECAC Hockey League regular season champions.

Bagnall, a first-team All America, ECACHL Player of the Year, ECACHL Outstanding Defensive Defenseman award winner and Hobey Baker Award finalist, added Saint Most Valuable Player, the Peter McGeough Award and the Jinx Doyle Award to his impressive list of honors for the 2006-07 season.

The Saint captain, who was also Inside College Hockey’s Defenseman of the Year was the leading scorer among Saint defensemen with 25 points and was the leader of a sophomore-dominated defensive unit which helped the Saints finish among the top teams in the league in penalty killing and overall defense. SLU finished the year with its lowest team goals against average since the 2000 season with a 2.64 goals against average.

Bagnall shared the Jinx Doyle Award, which is presented in recognition of leadership and character, with junior goalie and assistant captain Justin Pesony. Pesony was also presented the Terry Slater Perseverance Award and the Brian McFarlane Award. The McFarlane Award recognizes outstanding academic accomplishment and Pesony is one of the top students in the junior class and has been on the Dean’s List every semester. A goaltender who appeared in 37 games as a sophomore and won 20 games, Pesony’s became a backup this season with the emergence of freshman Alex Petizian as the number one goalie in the second half of the season, and the Slater Award and Doyle Award were in recognition of his outstanding attitude, leadership and support during the recently completed season.

Petizian, who was the ECAC Hockey League All Rookie Team goaltender and second team All ECACHL, was selected as the Mike Pelletier/Rich Stewart Rookie of the Year. The freshman goaltender played in 27 games and started 27, compiling a 2.29 goals against average and a .916 save percentage to go with a 19-9-1 record. His goals against average is the fourth best in Saint hockey history.

Senior captain Kyle Rank and senior forward Max Taylor were named co-winners of the Bernie McKinnon Coaches Award for their contributions to the team in 2006-07. Both had their most productive years as scorers and Rank was the winner of the ECACHL Outstanding Defensive Forward award as well. Rank finished the year as the leading scorer for the Saints with 15 goals, 18 assists and 33 points, all career season bests, while Taylor was the third leading scorer for the Saints with 13 goals and 18 assists for 31 points, also producing season bests in goals, assists and points.

Taylor was also named co-winner of the Paul J. Flanagan Most Improved Player Award for his increased production and outstanding play at center. Junior Jordan Hack, who stepped into the lineup in December after injuries created openings and contributed five goals and five assists in 22 games after seeing limited time in his first two seasons, shared the Most Improved award with Taylor.

Andrzej Sandrzyk, a graduate student who completed his undergraduate degree in three years and was a finalist for the ECACHL Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award was named the winner of the Dr. James S. Street Seventh Player Award. Sandrzyk played every position but goal for the Saints this past season, playing primarily at center or wing, but also dropping back to play defense when injuries created a need. He finished the season with two goals and six assists in 25 games.

The Saints also announced captains for 2007-08 with Pesony and defensemen Shawn Fensel and Jared Ross being named tri-captains.
