Re-instituted as a varsity program in 1999-2000, the Saint men's golf team made its second straight NCAA Division III tournament appearance in 2003-2004 in just its fifth season back on the varsity sport roster.
The first official golf season at St. Lawrence was 1937 and that team went 3-2-2 with match play wins over the Massena Caddies and a pair of victories over Clarkson, draws with Syracuse University and a team from Jefferson Country Club and losses to Colgate and Hamilton. The program was dropped at the end of the 1978 season due to declining numbers, but was one of seven sports added to start the 1999-2000 academic year. Saint golf teams have played in two Division III NCAA tournaments and once in the NCAA open championships. The 1952 golf team played in the NCAA Championships at Ohio State and finished 24th. Coach Mary Lawrence, a former LPGA touring professional, has quickly built the Saint men's and women's teams into NCAA contenders and her women's team made its first NCAA appearance in the spring of 2003. The Saint golfers benefit from an indoor golf training center which is one of the finest in the East. It includes a golf simulator, three computerized hitting areas, a putting green and a chipping area for winter practice and training. The Saints' outdoor home is the St. Lawrence University Golf Course, a 6700 yards championship-caliber course from the blue tees which is one of the best courses in Northern New York. The Saints also play some practice rounds and part of their annual fall invitational tournament on nearby Partridge Run in Canton. Both men's and women's teams play a fall and spring schedule with the spring season opening with a southern trip during semester break.
