MUDGE LEADS SAINTS TO THIRD AT DUKE NELSON INVITATIONAL Sept. 16: Junior Chris Mudge combined rounds of three-over par 75 and 77 for a 152 total and led St. Lawrence University’s men’s golf team to a solid third place showing in the 25-team Duke Nelson Invitational at Middlebury.
Mudge shot his collegiate low round in the first round of the tournament as the Saints had four golfers shoot in the 70s in each round of the tournament.
Skidmore won the team title with a 599 total while Williams was second with 605 and the Saints third with 617. Hamilton was four strokes back, followed by Clarkson, Salem State and host Middlebury.
Ben Von Reyn shot the low round of the tournament for the Saints on Saturday with a 74 and helped the Saints to a second place showing after day one, two strokes behind Williams. Von Reyn and Mudge were joined by Wes Ballantyne, who shot 76 and Max Davis, who carded a 79 to comprise the counting scores on day one.
Davis shot a second straight 79, L.B. Haney shot 78, Mudge 77 and Von Reyn 78 to comprise day two’s team total of 313 strokes.
The Saints will play at Williams this weekend.
BALLANTYNE LEADS SAINTS IN SLU INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT Sept. 9: St. Lawrence University’s men’s golf team finished seventh in a 14-team field in the St. Lawrence University Collegiate Invitational held on the St. Lawrence University Golf Course Saturday and Sunday.
The University of Ottawa shot a two-round total of 589 to beat St. John Fisher by seven strokes for the team title. The best four out of five scores in each of the two rounds count toward the team total. Ottawa shot 295 as a team on Saturday and 294 on Sunday, led by individual champion Robert Mustard, who followed up a four-under par 68 on Saturday with a 73 under damp and cool conditions on Sunday. Scott Harris, Jr., of St. John Fisher was runner-up in the individual competition with rounds of 69 and 74 for a 143 total.
Wes Ballantyne led the Saint men, finishing 21 st overall with rounds of 76 and 78 for a 154 total. Max Davis and Chris Mudge tied for 22 nd with 155 totals, Davis shooting 76 and 79 and Mudge 78 and 77. L.B. Haney shot 156 and tied for 30 th with rounds of 75 and 81 and Ben von Reyn tied for 50 th with a 165 total, shooting 79 and 86.
The Saint Brown team was led by Matt Wight who tied for 43 rd with rounds of 80 and 81 for 161. Chris Felix shot back-to-back rounds of 82 for a 154 total while freshman Pete Harriman shot 82-89-171, Kent Goodrow shot 93-86-179 and Doug Weaver shot two rounds of 91 for a 182 total.
