SAINTS, HANEY FINISH FOURTH AT INVITATIONAL

Sept. 10: St. Lawrence University’s “Scarlet” team finished fourth in a 12-team field and sophomore L.B. Haney, playing for the “Brown” team had the top Saint individual performance, tying for fourth place overall at the St. Lawrence University Golf Invitational at the St. Lawrence Golf Course Saturday and Sunday.

 

Humber Institute of Technology of Canada won the event with a two-day total of 591 with the top four of five scores counting each day. St. John Fisher was second at 597 and the University of Rochester was third with 600. The Saints were ten strokes back followed by NYU, Waterloo and Clarkson in a tie for sixth, Ottawa, the SLU Brown team, SUNY Potsdam, Saint Anselm’s and Nazareth.

 

Rochester’s Stephen Goodridge, the defending NCAA Division III individual champion was the medalist and individual champion of the tournament with a two-under par total of 142 on the 6746 yard course. Goodridge was one of four players to card under-par rounds in the tournament. St. John Fisher’s Scott Harris and Humber’s Mike Zicek matched his 70 while Chris Wuest of Rochester, playing as an individual, carded at 71 on Sunday.

 

Haney shot rounds of 74 and 73 for a 147 total and the low round for a Saint player. Jason Condro (left) led the Scarlet team with rounds of 77 and 75 for a 152 total and tied for 13 th overall while Chris Felix, also playing for the Scarlet team, shot 78-75 and was tied for 17 th. Max Davis shot 76-78 and was tied for 21 st, Ben von Reyn shot 75 and 80 and was tied for 27 th and Josh Trivilino shot 74 and 85 and tied for 37 th.

 

Mike Hilts had two rounds of 79 for the Brown team and was tied for 33 rd at 158 while Ryan Thorpe shot back-to-back 80s and was tied for 40 th. Wes Ballantyne shot 82 in each round for a 164 total and Matt Wight shot 85 and 89 for a 174 total.

 

The Saints will return to action at Middlebury next weekend.

 

BIG FIELD FOR SLU INVITATIONAL TO OPEN SEASON

The University of Rochester and defending NCAA Division III champion Stephen Goodridge plus some top Canadian collegiate competition will be among the 11 men’s teams participating in the St. Lawrence University Collegiate Invitational at the St. Lawrence University Golf Course Saturday and Sunday.

 

Humber College, 2004-05 Canadian men's national champion, Waterloo, 2005 Ontario provincial collegiate champions and The Unviersity of Ottawa join NYU, Rochester, Nazareth, St. John Fisher, St. Anselm and North Country rivals Potsdam and Clarkson in the men's field.

 

Both the Saint men’s and women’s teams will host highly competitive fields for the two-day tournament to kick off the collegiate golf season.

 

The Saints will be led by senior Jason Condro and will field two teams for the tournament. Condro, the 2005-06 team MVP, will be joined by seniors Mike Hilts, Josh Trivilino and Ryan Thorpe and juniors Chris Felix, Wes Ballantyne and Max Davis plus sophomore LB Haney among the collegiate veterans.

 

Freshman Ben von Reyn and junior Matt Wight, who played his high school and junior golf at the St. Lawrence University Golf Course are the new faces on the Saint team.

 

Condro led the Saints with a 78.43 stroke average as a junior and shot a low round of 70 at the Middlebury Invitational. Felix had the low round of the year for the Saints with a 69 in the Liberty League Championships and earned All League honors. Trivilino also had a sub-80 stroke average in 14 competitive rounds last season.
