SAINT MEN FINISH 22ND IN NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP

May 15: St. Lawrence University's men's golf team shot 310 in the final round of the 2003 NCAA Division III championships and jumped Susquehanna to finish 22nd overall in their first NCAA tournament appearance.

The Saints were led by John Pezdek, who shot his fourth straight sub-80 round with a 74 on Thursday and finished tied for 43rd overall, 18 over par for the 72-hole tournament.

Joe Kenniston and Pete Wilson each shot 78 on Thursday while Drew Burdick shot 80 and Mike Whalley 81 to complete the Saint scoring.

SAINTS SHOOT THEIR BEST YET AT NCAA MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP

May 14: The Saint men's golf team put together its best round of the tournament Wednesday at the NCAA Division III golf championships in Ohio, but remain 23rd in the field heading into the final round of play.

John Pezdek and Pete Wilson each shot 74 and Drew Burdick added a 79 as the Saints had three golfers under 80 for the second straight day in the 72-hole tournament.

Joe Keniston added an 80 as the fourth counting score for a 307 team total. Mike Whalley shot an 81 as the Saints' fifth golfer.

SAINT MEN IMPROVE, BUT STILL TRAIL AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP

May 13: St. Lawrence University's men's golf team trimmed 18-strokes off its first round scores, but still trails the field in the 72-hole NCAA Division III golf championships at the Dornoch Golf Club in Delaware, OH.

The Saint men, who shot 329 in Monday's opening round with four of five scores counting toward the team total, trimmed that to 311 and trail Susquehanna by five strokes.

John Pezdek led the Saints on Tuesday with a 76 and coupled with Monday's 78 has a two round total of 154. Joe Kenniston shot 76 on Tuesday while Drew Burdick shot 79, Mike Whalley 80 and Pete Wilson carded an 83.

The tournament continues Wednesday.

SAINTS 23RD AFTER FIRST DAY OF NCAA GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

May 12: St. Lawrence University's men's golf team shot a 329 in its first round at the NCAA Division III golf championships at the Dornoch Golf Club in Delaware, OH, leaving them in 23rd place with three rounds to play.

Wesley College leads the tournament with a team score of 292, counting the best four of five scores. Wesley's score is eight over par for the course.

Anthony Apololstico of Wesley was the only player to break par on Monday, shooting a 70 on the 6613 yard par 71 layout.

John Pezdek led the Saints with a 78 and is tied for 45th overall while Joe Keniston shot 82 and is tied for 97th. Pete Wilson shot 84 to tie for 110th after the first round and Drew Burdick and Mike Whalley are tied for 114th with first round scores of 85.

SAINTS AWARDED NCAA TOURNAMENT SPOT

May 1: St. Lawrence University men's golf team has been selected to participate in the 2003 NCAA Division III Golf Championships which will be held in Delaware, OH May 12-15.

The Saints join Skidmore and Williams as the Northeast regional representatives among the 23 teams selected for the championship which will be hosted by Ohio Wesleyan.

St. Lawrence is making its first appearance in the NCAA Division III field and is doing it in just the fourth year of its resurrection as an intercollegiate program. The golf program was dropped in the mid-1970s, but returned along with the establishment of a women's golf team, in 1998-99. The Saint women's team in also under consideration for an NCAA bid with those bids to be announced early next week.

"We are obviously pretty excited about it," said Saint coach Mary Lawrence. "It is a tribute to the hard work that the guys have put into the program and into their game. Long hours in the indoor facility during the winter and a dedication to team success has really paid off.

"I am particularly happy for our seniors…what a great experience to finish their collegiate careers with," Lawrence added.

The Saints played their final regular season match on Thursday at the St. Lawrence Golf and Country Club, winning a four-team tournament among North Country schools which included Potsdam, Clarkson and Plattsburgh.

Junior Pete Wilson shot a two-under par 70 to lead the Saints, who had a 303 total, five better than Plattsburgh's 308. Clarkson was third with 347 and Potsdam did not field a full team.

In addition to Wilson's medallist round, Drew Burdick shot 74 to finish second overall while John Pezdek shot 79 and Mike Whalley and Randy Todd each shot 80. Simon Watson shot 75 and Brad Bardon carded an 80 playing as individuals. Brandon Smith shot 75 to lead Plattsburgh while Eric Wallace shot 83 and Pete Fuller shot 85 to pace Clarkson. Eric Scharf had a 79 for Potsdam.

PEZDEK LEADS SAINTS IN DISTRICT SHOOTOUT

April 27: Senior John Pezdek shot rounds of 76 and 75 on the Taconic Golf Course at Williams Saturday and Sunday, finishing tied for sixth among individuals in the District One Shootout, but the Saint team finished off their hoped for pace, ending up fifth in a 12-team field.

Skidmore won the competition with rounds of 299 and 296 for a 595 total, a 13-stroke lead over host Williams which was second at 608. Salem State was third at 614 followed by New York University at 618 and the Saints with a 624 team total. Middlebury was sixth, six strokes back of the Saints.

Sophomore Joe Keniston was the second Saint finisher with rounds of 75 and 78 for a 153 total, which tied for 13th while freshman Mike Whalley was tied for 25th with rounds of 78 and 79 and a 157 total. Pete Wilson shot 83 and 81 for 164, tying for 42nd and Drew Burdick shot 82-87-169 and tied for 52nd.

SAINTS WIN PALAMOUNTAIN GOLF INVITATIONAL & HAMILTON EVENT

April 21: St. Lawrence University's men's golf team shot 310 to win the 17th annual Palamountain Invitational Golf Tournament hosted by Skidmore College at the par-72 McGregor Links Country Club on Monday.

The Saints posted a seven-stroke margin of victory over Skidmore, which is ranked 16th nationally with Salem State third at 320 and Williams and Hamilton tied for fourth at 323 in a 18-team field.

The Saints also picked up a victory in a smaller event hosted by Hamilton at the Turning Stone Casino course on Sunday. The Saints shot 301 for a five stroke victory over second place Nazareth in that event.

Brian Williams of Hamilton was the medallist in the Skidmore tournament with a 74, but the Saints took the next two spots as senior John Pezdek shot a 75 and junior Pete Wilson a 76. Joe Keniston was tied for 11th with a 79 and Mike Whalley shot 80 to complete the Saint scoring. Drew Burdick was the fifth player for the Saints and shot 86, tied for 46th in a 89 player field.

Pezdek was again second with a 72 at Turning Stone as Williams took medalist honors for the host team with a 70. Whalley shot 74, Burdick 77, Wilson 78 and Keniston 79 for the Saint scoring.

The Saints will return to action at the district shootout at Williams College Saturday and Sunday.

BURDICK LEADS SAINTS AT LEMOYNE

April 14: Senior Drew Burdick shot rounds of 74 and 76 to finish tied for second overall with a 150 total and helped the men's golf team to a third place finish in the LeMoyne Invitational, the first completed spring event for the team.

Division II schools Bryant and Charleston (WVA) were first and second in the 18-team field while the Saints were third and the first Division III team, just one shot out of second. Cornell finished fourth, St. Thomas was fifth and St. Rose was sixth.

Sophomore Joe Keniston tied for sixth with rounds of 73 and 79 and a 152 totqal while Mike Whalley, playing as an individual, tied for 11th with rounds of 77 and 78 for a 155 total.

John Pezdek was the Saints' third finisher toward the team score with rounds of 78 and 81 for a 159 total while Pete Wilson shot 79 and 82 for a 161 total and Randy Todd 84-80-164.

The Saints will play in the Skidmore Spring Invitational on April 21.

SAINT GOLFERS FOURTH IN ECAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Oct. 7: St. Lawrence University's men's golf team concluded its fall season with a fourth place finish in the 2002 ECAC Men's Golf Championships at Deerfield Country Club in Rochester.

The Saints shot a two-day total of 637, finishing two strokes ahead of Tufts and Salem State which tied for fifth in an 18 team field. Skidmore won the team title with a 619 total followed by Hamilton at 627 and Nazareth at 629.

John Pezdek was the top individual finisher for the Saints, shooting 78-79-157 over the two day tournament. Pezdek tied for 12th in the 94 golfer field, which was led by medallist Tom Ferraro of Hamilton who shot 74-73-147.

Sophomore Joe Keniston tied for 15th with rounds of 77 and 82 for a 159 total while Pete Wilson tied for 18th with 79-81-160 and Mike Whalley tied for 27th with rounds of 81-80-161. Drew Burdick was the Saints' fifth golfer and tied for 42nd with 82-82-164.

SAINTS SECOND IN UCAA CHAMPIONSHIP, ECAC QUALIFIER

Sept. 26, 2002: St. Lawrence University's men's golf team finished second in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Championships and in the ECAC Upstate New York qualifying tournament which was held at the par-72 Saratoga Spa State Park Course on Thursday.

The Saints shot 295 to trail only perennial UCAA champion Skidmore in both events. Skidmore won the ECAC qualifier with a 290 score and the UCAA with a 289 while Rochester was third in both events with a 300 score. Nazareth and St. John Fisher both shot 301, Hamilton shot 304 and Oswego 305 to qualify for the ECAC finals. Hamilton was fourth in the UCAA followed by Rensselaer, Hobart and Clarkson.

The Saints will join six other teams from the Upstate region, plus teams from New England and Metro at the 2002 Division III championships in Brockport on October 5-6.

Pete Wilson (above) led the Saints with an even par-72 and earned first team UCAA honors. Wilson was third in the UCAA championship and tied for fifth in the ECAC qualifier. John Pezdek also earned first-team UCAA honors with a tie for fourth at one-over 73 and was tied for 7th in the ECAC qualifier.

Drew Burdick and Joe Keniston tied for 12th in the UCAA championship with 75s while Mike Whalley shot 80 to tie for 26th and Randy Todd and Nick Politi shot 81 to tie for 28th. Burdick, Keniston and Whalley's scores made up the rest of the Saint team for the ECAC qualifier.

 

SAINTS FINISH TIED FOR 18TH IN RAIN-SHORTENED WILLIAMS GOLF INVITATIONAL

Sept. 22: St. Lawrence University's men's golf team finished tied for 18th in a 24-team field at the Williams Invitational, an event cut to 18-holes after heavy overnight rains Saturday made conditions unplayable for Sunday's round.

Emory College won the tournament with 285 strokes with Skidmore, led by Ross Morgan's three-under 68 for medallist honors, finishing second at 288. The Saints finished with 318 strokes.

Drew Burdick led the Saints with a 75 and tied for 28th overall. Sophomore Joe Keniston shot 77, seniors John Pezdek 80 and Randy Todd 82 and junior Pete Wilson shot 84 to complete the Saint scoring.

The Saints will compete in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association championships and the ECAC Division III qualifying tournament at Saratoga on Thursday.

SAINTS FINISH FIFTH AT MIDDLEBURY

Sept. 15: St. Lawrence University's men's golf team finished fifth overall, but just two strokes out of a tie for second in the 2002 Duke Nelson Golf Tournament at Middlebury College's Ralph Myre Golf Course on Sunday.

Williams won the team title with a total of 602 strokes for the two rounds of play while Nazareth and Salem State tied for second at 617, host Middlebury was fourth at 618 and the Saints were fifth at 619, five strokes better than sixth place Skidmore. The best four of five scores counted in the two-day tourney, which included 25 teams and 123 golfers.

Senior John Pezdek (left)led the Saints with a two-day total of 150, shooting 74 on the par 72 course on Sunday. Pezdek opened with a 76 on Saturday and joined junior Pete Wilson as the low Saint finisher on the initial day of play. Wilson shot 78 on Sunday and was the second Saint golfer with a 154 total.

Randy Todd shot 79-79-158 and Joe Keniston shot 80-78-158 to complete the Saint scoring while Drew Burdick was the fifth Saint golfer with a 79-80-159 total.

Pezdek tied for sixth overall while Wilson joined him in the top 20 with a tie for 20th.

The Saints will play at the Williams Tournament this coming weekend.

SAINTS WIN SKIDMORE INVITATIONAL

Sept. 10: Freshman golfer Matt Whalley made a big difference for
St. Lawrence University's men's golf team Tuesday, as his 78 gave the Saints a team victory in the 22nd annual Skidmore Invitational Golf Tournament at McGregor Links Country Club.

The Saints, who won their second straight tournament, tied Hamilton College for the overall lead with four scores totaling 305. Whalley's 78 proved to be the difference as he was the fifth Saint scorer, easily beating Hamilton's fifth man. Host Skidmore, the perennial UCAA champions, played two teams and finished third and fourth at 310 and 311.

It was the first victory for a Saint team over Skidmore since men's golf was reintroduced at St. Lawrence four years ago. A total of 11 teams played in the event with Plattsburgh fifth, Clarkson and Western New England tied for sixth, Potsdam eighth, Hobart ninth, Hartwick tenth and Springfield finishing 11th.

Pete Wilson (above) led the Saints, finishing tied for third with a 74. Sophomore Joe Keniston shot 75, Drew Burdick 77 and John Pezdek and Whalley each shot 78 for the Saints. Hamilton had three golfers shoot 76 and their fourth shoot 77 to forge the team tie with four of five scores counting, but the tie-breaker was an easy win for the Saints. Skidmore's Lee Lyon was the tournament medallist at 72 in a 54 golfer field.

PEZDEK, BURDICK PACE SAINTS TO TOURNEY TITLE

Sept. 8: Seniors John Pezdek and Drew Burdick both finished in the top five overall and the Saint men's golf team pulled away from the field with a solid Sunday performance at Partridge Run to capture the team trophy in the St. Lawrence Golf Invitational.

The Saint Scarlet team was tied with St. John Fisher after Saturday's round at the St. Lawrence University Golf Course as all four Saint scorers shot 78 or better for a team total of 302. The Saints shot a 305 total on Sunday at Partridge Run to finish with a 607 team score while Division II Bryant College shot 304 on Sunday and jumped up the standings to take second, eight strokes back of the Saints at 615. St. John Fisher ballooned to a 334 team total at Partridge Run and faded to fifth while Nazareth College and New York University tied for third at 620.

A total of 15 men's team competed in the event and the Saint Brown team finished eighth with a 644 total.

Pezdek (left)finished third overall, following a one-over 73 on Saturday at St. Lawrence with a three-over 75 at Partridge Run to finish with a 148 total, two strokes back of individual champion Jason Clary of Bryant, who was the only player to match par in the two days of competition when he shot a 72 on Saturday at the
St. Lawrence course. Paul Delosse of Carleton University was second with a 147 total. Burdick finished strong with two birdies in his last three holes on Sunday to shoot a 74 and was fifth at 152 while sophomore Joe Keniston combined rounds of 76 and 77 and finished with a 153 total, good for a tie for sixth. Pete Wilson shot 75 on Saturday and finished with a 154 total to tie for tenth and complete the Saint scoring. Randy Todd was the fifth player on the Scarlet team and tied for 50th.

Freshman Mike Whalley led the Brown team with two rounds of 77 and a 154 total, tied for tenth. Drew Constantine shot 151 and was 29th while Simon Watson shot 164 to tie for 39th and Nick Politi completed the Brown team scoring with a 169 total.

The Saint men will play at Skidmore on Tuesday.
