SAINTS' CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS EARN USTFCCCA ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS Feb. 27: The St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s cross country teams each earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors this season. Graduate student Elizabeth Ludovici also earned a spot as an Individual on the All-Academic Team for her outstanding effort both on the cross country trail and in the classroom.
For a team to be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, they must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional Meet. The team must also have a minimum 3.10 team cumulative grade point average.
An unbelievable total of 141 Division III women’s programs received the USTFCCCA’s All-Academic Team honors this year compared to 112 schools from last season. Meanwhile, 99 men’s programs earned the honor including 23 of the 32 teams at the 2007 NCAA Championships. Thirty of the thirty-two teams in the women’s championship field at this year’s NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships were named USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams.
“I thought our team was a very dedicated group this year, which included their work-ethic both at and after practice,” added men’s cross country coach John Newman. “For both the men’s and women’s programs to receive this award is a testament to the co-curricular education that St. Lawrence University offers.”
Haverford College was named the 2007 NCAA Division III USTFCCCA Men’s All-Academic Cross Country Team of the Year, while Amherst College won the same award on the women’s side.
HOWARD AND NEWMAN HONORED BY LIBERTY LEAGUE Nov. 29: On Thursday afternoon, the Liberty League announced that St. Lawrence University sophomore Eli Howard and Head Coach John Newman were voted as two of the conference’s year-end award winners. Howard, who had an outstanding first season with the Saints, was named the “Rookie of the Year,” while Newman was named “Coach of the Year” for the third time in his tenure.
A six-time selection as Liberty League Rookie of the Week, Howard made an immediate impact for the Saints in 2007. He finished his rookie campaign with five top-10 finishes, including a 3rd place showing in the Liberty League Championships. He was 10th at the NYSCTC Championships and 16th at the NCAA Atlantic Regional, earning an individual bid to the 2007 NCAA Championships where he finished in 77th place overall.
Meanwhile, Coach Newman led the Saints to their 13th straight Liberty League team title, and to the No. 12 spot in the national rankings, the highest ranking under the Canton, NY native. His team also won the Pre-Regional Meet at NYU, and qualified both Howard and senior Erik Donohoe for the 2007 NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championships.
The Liberty League’s “Runner of the Year” award was won by Hamilton College’s Peter Kosgei, who won the Liberty League Championships, the NYSCTC Championships, and the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships.
