Co-captain of the 1993 men's cross country team and a four-year runner for the Saints in cross country and indoor and outdoor track, John Newman is in his seventh season as head men's cross country coach after serving as assistant cross country and track and field coach since 1994-95.

A 1994 graduate of St. Lawrence, Newman has played a major role in the success of the men's cross country program which includes 13 straight conference men's titles and a streak of three straight New York State Collegiate Track Conference cross country championships. The Saints also won the NCAA Regional championship in 1997 and 2000.

The Canton, NY native was the Liberty League Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2005. He also serves as the high jump, middle and long distance coach, and recruiting director for the track and field teams.

In addition to his coaching duties, Newman is the St. Lawrence Director of Intramurals and Recreation and is the NYSCTC Performance List Editor. He started the NYSCTC web site in 2000 and continues to maintain that site. Newman has also served as the Atlantic Region Rankings Coordinator in 2004 and 2005 and has coached four All-Americans and nine individual conference champions.

In his 18th season as the St. Lawrence University track and field coach, Mike Howard will oversee both the men's and women's cross country programs in his role as Director of Cross Country and Track and Field and will continue his involvement in the fall programs..

Howard, a 1987 St. Lawrence graduate and associate athletic director, was named the 1996, 1998 and 2000 United States Track Coaches Association NCAA Division III Cross Country District Coach of the Year. He was the 1996, '97 and '98 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) cross country Coach of the Year and earned Coach of the Year honors in New York State for track and field in 1993, '94, '96, '97, '98 and '99. He was recently elected president of the New York State Collegiate Track and Field Conference which oversees the state meets in cross country and indoor and outdoor track.

He was a standout in both cross country and track as an undergraduate and remains active as a runner. He was a three time competitor in the NCAA Cross Country Championships and was a consistent scorer for the Saints in the distance races in both indoor and outdoor track.
