SAINTS EARN NO. 12 RANKING IN NATIONAL POLL Oct. 3: The St. Lawrence University men's cross country team jumped up three spots to No. 12 in Tuesday's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Poll after capturing their 13th straight Liberty League title on Saturday.
The Saints, led by senior tri-captain Erik Donohoe and newcomer Eli Howard, have worked the Scarlet and Brown up the regional scale and now into the national spotlight. The 12th overall ranking is the highest under current head coach John Newman, as 2002 men's team reached No. 14.
"It is exciting for our team to see that our hard work is paying off, both with a Liberty League championship and now the No. 12 ranking in the national polls," said Coach Newman. "However, we have a long way to go to reach our goals, so we can not get complacent."
SAINTS CONTINUE LONG LEAGUE TITLE STREAK WITH 13TH STRAIGHT Sept. 29: The excitement was all in the race for the individual title at the 2007 Liberty League cross country championships held on Clarkson’s 8 kilometer course in Potsdam.
The expected duel between St. Lawrence senior Erik Donohoe and Hamilton sophomore Peter Kosgei was a tremendous race with Saint sophomore Eli Howard not far behind in a sprint to the finish. Kosgei, the 2007 NCAA Division III 3000 meter steeplechase champion, edged Donohoe, a two-time league champion, by a mere four seconds as the two blasted down the stretch to the finish at full sprint. Howard, in his first season of cross country for the Saints, finished third, eight seconds behind Donohoe, as the top three runners all finished well in front of the rest of the pack.
Kosgei won the individual championship in 26:01 with Donohoe second in 26:05 and Howard third in 20:13.
The race for the team title was over quickly as Saint runners Daniel Ramsey, David Lloyd and Tyler Ludington finished in a pack for fourth, fifth and sixth to give the Saints a near-perfect team finish and a total of 20 points, one off the meet record of 19. With Jeremy Beaudette finishing eighth and Jacob Malcomb tenth overall in the displacement spots, the Saints won by 44 points over second place Hamilton with Rensselaer third with 72, Vassar fourth with 93, Clarkson fifth with 160, Union sixth with 177 and Hobart seventh with 185.
The championship was the 13 th straight for the nationally-ranked No. 15 Saints, who have never lost a title race since the league was formed in 1995. The Saint margin of victory was the third largest in meet history.
Ramsey and Lloyd finished in 27:02 with Ludington a second behind in 27:03 to complete the scoring group for the Saints while Beaudette ran 27:08 and Malcomb 27:10.
Other Saint finishers included Brandon Kenny, 15 th overall in 27:31, Geoff Millard, 20 th in 27:38; Terrance Fox 22 nd in 27:43; Chris Funch 31 st in 28:17, Joshua LeBlanc 32 nd in 28:22, Will Manning 33 rd in 28:28, Ian Schofield 35 th in 28:31, Todd Lavigne 40 th in 28:39, Matt Millard 50 th in 29:00, Alex Fisher 57 th in 29:27; Jordan Garfinkle 63 rd in 30:01; James Mayers 68 th in 30:28 and William Trumper 72 nd in 31:03.
