LOOK TO CONTEND FOR THIRD STRAIGHT NCAA BID While
St. Lawrence University's men's cross country team returns less than half of its
top seven runners from a team which won the Saints' sixth straight Upstate Collegiate
Athletic Association championship and the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship,
first-year head coach John Newman feels his team should contend for both a conference
title and a third straight NCAA championship meet appearance. Junior
Matt Migonis, an All America in track in the 10,000 meters last spring, will lead
the Saints into the 2001 season and joins senior Fred Tripp as the Saint captains.
Junior Kris Enwright is the third returnee from last year's regional championship
team and should be among the top three for the Saints throughout the season..
Senior Nate Page joins a group of six sophomores to contend
for other top seven positions. John Milanese, Andy Dana, Derek Hackman, Lati Lelilit,
Ryan Wells and Jonah Freedman all have collegiate experience and will give the
Saints excellent depth. Add in transfer Peter Casabonne and
five freshman candidates and the Saints should have solid competition for top
seven positions. Freshman Ryan Pollock, a Queensbury High School product, is the
son of Lee Pollock, who was the Saints' first-ever track All America in the steeplechase.
Other rookie candidates include Terran Palmer-Angell of Plattsburgh, Ben Pangie
of Burnt Hills, Sam Perry of Thetford, VT and Aaron Ladd of Lexington, MA. "We
have a very young team this fall, but we do have excellent upper class leadership
in Migonis, Tripp and Enwright, who have been to two straight NCAA championships,"
said Newman. "With the help of a few of the guys who were just out of the top
seven last year and additional help from the new runners, we should be able to
place well in many of our meets." |
