SAINTS FALL IN TIGHT VARSITY RACE TO RIT,

CAPTURE NOVICE EVENT

Apr. 3: The St. Lawrence University men’s crew team kicked off their spring schedule in Rochester, NY this weekend against the RIT Tigers in a series of races on the Genesee River.

In the men’s varsity eight race, the two teams were very evenly matched which bodes well for head coach George Repicky’s team, as RIT generally boasts one of the top programs in New York. On a very windy day with occasional strong gusts, RIT edged the St. Lawrence varsity boat by .65 seconds to earn the victory. The Tigers raced in 6:01.70, while the Saints came in at 6:02.35. The Tigers also won the men’s varsity four with a time of 6:57.51.

"It's tough to lose by half a second but it is very early season and we have only been on the water for two weeks. RIT is always one of the top men's teams in the state so to be right with then with such a young boat is very promising,” said coach Repicky. “Our guys know that we have substantial room to get faster as we get into our season."

The Saints did not come away from the RIT meet empty-handed, however, thanks to the great effort from their novice team. The men’s novice eight boat coasted to victory in 6:19.65, a full twenty seconds ahead of RIT (6:40.41).

"Our novice guys trained hard all winter long and have helped to make our men's team much stronger then it has ever been,” noted Repicky.  “What they don't have in experience they make up for with intensity and commitment.  I'm very happy that they preformed so well in their first sprint race."

The Saints will have two weeks off before hitting the water again when they travel to Ithaca, NY for a meet with Ithaca College on Saturday, April 15th.

SAINTS' CREW TEAMS WELL

REPRESENTED ON DEAN'S LIST

Feb. 20: The St. Lawrence men's and women's crew teams had a combined eleven team members qualify for the Dean's List first semester.

Sophomores Rob Courtney, Evan Smith, and Kit Wright along with first year student Julian Holland represented the men's side. The Saints women's crew team had seven team members qualify. They included senior Emilie McRoberts, juniors Paula Bogart, Vanessa Harvey, Chelsea Isdell, and Amy Lichorat, sophomore Monica Marois, and first year student Michelle Hicks.

The Dean's List comprises those students who in the preceding semester earned a GPA of 3.6 or higher in a minimum of four courses worth at least one unit each and for which a number grade was received.

SAINTS FINISH FALL SEASON STRONG,

LOOK FORWARD TO SPRING

Nov. 1: The St. Lawrence University men’s crew team closed out the fall season this past weekend with an impressive showing at the Head of the Fish, the largest one day regatta in the country.

The Saints’ novice men opened the day with a third place finish (3 out of 24) in the Novice Men’s 8+ race. The Saints were 5 seconds off Colgate “A”, and 9 seconds in front of Hobart “A”. The Saints’ have medaled in this event the past three years.

“We have a great group of novice men. They train hard and really lay it out there every practice and every race.” said men’s head coach George Repicky. “The novice men have really made our team more competitive within itself and that has had a dramatic effect on our overall speed.”

In the Open Men’s 8+ event the Saints entered two boats and came in 5 th and 7 th ( 5 and 7 out of 19) with just six seconds between the two. The Saints defeated boats from Union, Syracuse, UVM, URI, and Fairfield University.

“Being a very young team we spent the fall rowing everyone together in mixed boats and learning how to race every day in practice. It was great to see the results improve each race.” said Repicky.

The Saints’ next event will be a training trip to Florida in late March with their first race a dual meet with RIT in Rochester on April 1.

SAINTS BUILDING MOMENTUM
IN DIVISION III

Oct. 10: The St. Lawrence University Men’s and Women’s crew teams, coming off strong performances at their first race of the year at the Head of the Mohawk, kept their momentum going with another solid performance at the Stonehurst Invitational on the Genesee River.

The Saints teams were both competitive in the overall standings, but even more so against the NCAA Division III teams. The Men’s team finished 15 th overall out of 22, running the AM head race (5000M) in a time of 17:15.00, and the PM race (1500M) in 4:45.61. Amongst the NCAA Division III teams, however, the Men’s team was in 6 th position.

“Our guy’s boat is very young, with a freshman and six sophomores in the boat this weekend. They squared off against almost all of the top crews in DIII and showed that they will be a very competitive crew come spring.” stated Head Men’s Coach George Repicky.

Meanwhile, the Women’s crew team was impressive as well in their second regatta of the year, finishing 12 th overall out of 30 teams, and 4 th overall out of the NCAA Division III teams. The Saints found themselves in 12 th overall after a time of 19:24.17 in the 5000M head race in the morning, and held on to that same position with a 5:20.84 1500M afternoon race.

Both Saint crew teams will be looking to keep their momentum going into their next regatta at the Head of the Charles in Cambridge, MA on October 22-23.

SAINTS OPEN STRONG AT

HEAD OF THE MOHAWK

Oct. 2: The St. Lawrence University Men’s and Women’s crew teams opened their fall season this Saturday with a strong showing at The Head of the Mohawk.

The Crew teams combined to bring home three cups, including “The Aqueduct Cup” (Open Women’s Eights, 15:10), and both “Mohawk Challenge Cups” (Novice Men and Women Eights 15:00; 17:10 respectively). The Saints were also very competitive in “The Schenectady Mayor’s Cup” (Open Men Eights), with the St. Lawrence “A” boat only 16 seconds behind the winning boat of RPI, and the St. Lawrence “B” boat in third, 42 seconds out of first (with a 30 second penalty).

“I was very pleased with the team’s performance this weekend. It was a beautiful day to race, and it gave us a chance to tune up and get some race experience before the Stonehurst Invitational,” said Coach Repicky.

The Saints will be in action Sunday, October 9 th, in Rochester for the Stonehurst Invitational.

REPICKY NAMED ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH

August 22: Margie Strait, St. Lawrence University Director of Athletics, announced that George Repicky has been named the Associate Head Coach/Head Men’s Crew Coach. Repicky also will serve as the Associate Head Coach of Women's Rowing. Nick Hughes is the Director of Rowing and the Head Women’s Crew Coach.

"I'm very excited about my new role with St. Lawrence University.  The last two years have been a great experience and I look forward to continuing to work with the men's and women's crew team and the athletic department here,” said Repicky.

Repicky spent the last two years as the Assistant Coach for Men’s and Women’s Crew.  Previously he was the Assistant Women's Coach at Lehigh University.

"George has been a valued assistant to the Crew Program and we are happy he has accepted the new challenge as the Associate Head Coach for the crew program/Head men's coach,” Strait commented. “George has great experience as a coach and we are excited to have him continue his leadership at St. Lawrence."

The Men’s and Women’s Crew teams open the 2005-2006 season at the Head of the Erie on Saturday, September 25th in Rome, N.Y.

SAINTS RETURN YOUTH AND SPEED IN 2005

July 13: 2004-2005 ended with the St. Lawrence University crew team boating its largest and fastest team ever. The men’s team was undefeated in the regular season and had an impressive showing at NYS Championships (a race which combines Division I,II, and III crews). The novice men were 6 th in the state, and the varsity men were 7 th. On the women’s side the varsity women were undefeated in the regular season and the novice women lost only one race. At States the varsity women were 6 th and the novice women placed 4 th.

Both women’s crews were invited to the ECAC Invitational. Unfortunately bad weather finished off their seasons with the novice women’s events being canceled and the varsity women only getting one heat in (two heats before they canceled the event).

2005-2006 will see continued growth, development and speed out of the Saint’s crew team. The team will be very young with no seniors on the men’s side and three seniors on the women’s side. An incoming class of 24 recruited athletes will only help to bolster our numbers and the competitiveness at practice. Also, former captain of Saint’s Crew, Sara Rademacher will return to the team as an assistant coach.

"We’re looking forward to a fast and fun fall rowing out of the beautiful St. Lawrence University Boathouse," said Head Coach Nick Hughes.
