SAINT CREW TEAMS POST IMPRESSIVE FINISHES IN HEAD OF THE CHARLES REGATTA St. Lawrence University's men's and women's crew teams each came through with excellent showings under difficult rowing conditions Saturday at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. The Saint men's team of Tom Wilder, Gerald Mann, Chris Taft, Jonathan King and coxswain Amanda McKay was seeded last in the Saturday race, but finished 21st in a field of 66 boats in a race run on a windy, demanding course. The women, Meg Wolfe, Katina Karagiannakis, Amy Bartoszewicz, and Kristin Putz with Meghan Gela as coxswain finished 19th in a 54 boat field on Saturday. "It was a very demanding race and particularly hard on the coxswains, who had never been part of the Head of the Charles races before. They did an outstanding job and Saturday was just a great day for us," said Saint coach Nick Hughes.
SAINT MEN'S CREW TOP DIVISION III TEAM IN REGATTA St. Lawrence University's men's crew team had the top finish among Division III schools in the John Bernfield Cup at the Stonehurst/Capital Invitational races in Rochester on Sunday. The team of Tom Wilder, Gerald Mann, Chris Taft, Jonathan King and coxswain Amanda McKay finished seventh overall in a field which included 17 boats. Brown won the race in a championship time of 31:30.97 with Yale second, Buffalo third, Syracuse fourth, Toronto fifth and Trent sixth. The Saints championship time, which combined morning and afternoon times, was 34:13.06. RIT was the second Division III team in ninth place with Middlebury, Hamilton, Cazenovia and Geneseo also competing. "It was an excellent showing for us," said Saint coach Nick Hughes. "We went up against some of the best U.S. college programs and rowed very well. Our consistency of times between the morning and afternoon sessions was excellent." The Saint women also rowed well, but were hurt by penalties in the races. The Saints were penalized one minute for being late to the start in the morning session and ten seconds for missing a bouy in the afternoon races. "The afternoon time was 10th out of 17 with the penalty, and we actually rowed much better than the times would suggest," said Hughes. The Saint boat included Meg Wolfe, Katina Karagiannakis, Amy Bartoszewicz, and Kristin Putz with Meghan Gela as coxswain and finished 14th overall.
