SAINTS CONTINUE PREPARATION FOR CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS WITH EXCITING WEEKEND RACES

Apr. 13: The St. Lawrence University men’s crew team continued to improve as they raced very strong crews from Ithaca and Hamilton Colleges on the Cayuga Inlet in Ithaca, NY Saturday, in preparation for the upcoming Liberty League Championships, scheduled for Saturday, April 26.

In the men’s varsity eight race, a speedy Ithaca crew finished first with a time of 5:55.4, while the Saints led the Continentals through the 1,000-meter mark. But Hamilton came on strong in the last half of the piece, defeating St. Lawrence by only four seconds, clocking in at 6:14.3, while the Scarlet and Brown crossed the finish line at 6:18.6.

Competing in the men’s varsity eight boat for St. Lawrence was junior Liam Delahanty (Francestown, NY/Conval Regional), senior Evan Smith (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township), junior Seth Corliss (Castleton, VT/Fair Haven Union), junior Jullian Holland (Falls Village, CT/Housatonic Valley), senior Seth Hussey (Biddeford, ME/Biddeford), senior Kit Wright (Johnson, VT/Lamoille Union), senior Tedd Rama (Cottekill, NY/Rondout Valley), junior Mike Syslo (Shrewsbury, MA/St. John’s) and coxswain Allison Webster (Weston, MA/Weston).

Despite losing to the Bombers, the Saints’ second varsity eight showed strength in their commanding defeat of the Continentals, with St. Lawrence finishing with a time of 6:43.7, while Hamilton clocked in at 7:06.1. Ithaca won with a time of 6:26.5.

The crew included senior Kyle Emery (Fairfax Station, VA/Lake Braddock Secondary), senior Andrew Lagos (Bow, NH/Bow), first-year Joey Colagrossi (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich), first-year Dave MacClaren (Madison, CT/Stratton Mountain School), sophomore Oke McAndrews (Dover, MA/Loomis Chaffee), senior Brent Davis (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca), senior Lawson Condrey (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent), junior Matt Sonagere (Auburn, ME/Edward Little High), and first-year coxswain Alyssa Halton (Ithaca, NY/Lansing).

In the novice four event, St. Lawrence defeated two crews from Ithaca College, winning with a time of 7:46.0. First-years Greg Gotta ( Northbridge, MA/ St. John’s), Cam West ( New Britain, CT/ Avon Old Farms), Brendan McGrath ( Hingham, MA/ Hingham), Nick Blum ( Buffalo, NY/Williamsville East) and coxswain Webster earned the victory for St. Lawrence.

Assistant Coach Lauren Schulz was pleased with her boat’s accomplishments. "The [men’s novice] crew rowed a very solid, relaxed race, although at a lower stroke rate than we anticipated.  With continued practice on the water this week, I hope we will be able to increase our comfort level and speed rowing at higher stroke ratings for our home races this weekend."

The Scarlet and Brown will host two Liberty League opponents next weekend, racing the Hamilton Continentals on Saturday and the Union Dutchwomen on Sunday. Races are scheduled to begin at 9:00am on the St. Lawrence River in Waddington, NY.
