VARSITY AND NOVICE COMPETE AT HOBART & WILLIAM SMITH CHALLENGE Oct. 15: The St. Lawrence men’s varsity and novice crew teams took to the Seneca River this weekend in the Hobart William Smith Challenge, in Geneva, NY on Saturday morning. It was the first time the novice team has competed this season, and for many first years, it was their first time rowing competitively.
The men’s varsity four were the first to compete on the 4,000-meter piece and 3 rd in a field of 13 with a final time of 17:04. The boat consisted of seniors Tedd Rama, Evan Smith, Seth Hussey, and Kit Wright and was coxswained by first-year Alexandra Palmisano.
The men’s novice 8 competed for the first time in their collegiate career and placed 4 th out of nine boats with a time of 16:05. The boat consisted of first-years Nelson Hoffman, Joey Colagrossi, Greg Gotta, Brendan McGrath, Dave MacClaren, Cam West, sophomore Oke McAndrews, first-year Nick Blum and first-year coxswain Alison Webster.
"I was very pleased with the novice men's 8+ row,” said men’s head coach George Repicky. “It was the first race for most of those guys and they put into practice a lot of the good technique items we have been working on. I think that they are in shape to have a very strong spring."
The Saints also competed in both the men’s varsity eight and the second varsity eight, with both boats finishing 3 rd out of 5 boats in each of their races. Saints competing in the first race included seniors Kyle Emery, Brent Davis, sophomores Brendan Kiniry, Jamie Harrison, junior Seth Corliss, sophomore James Herrington, seniors Seth Hussey, Kit Wright and senior coxswain Renee Rubin. The boat finished with a final time of 15:41.
The second varsity 8 consisted of senior Lawson Condrey, sophomore Alic Kelso, junior Liam Delahanty, senior Andrew Lagos, sophomore Paul Stapell, junior Matt Sonagere, seniors Tedd Rama and Evan Smith, and first-year coxswain Alexandra Palmisano. They rowed to a 15:40.
"I think the varsity men continued to apply the things we have been working on all fall,” Repicky said. “Again I think we were severely under stroking our competition but making sure that we develop good connection for the spring, which is more important then going fast in the fall."
The final men’s race of the day was the men’s novice four, where first-year rowers Casey O’Brien, Cody Witherell, sophomore Matt Woodard, first-years Johnny Chestnut and coxswain Alyssa Halton finished 4 th out of six boats in a time of 20:22.
The team will head out to Boston, MA this upcoming weekend for the 43rd annual Head of the Charles Regatta on the Charles River, where the Saints have entered one boat for competition in the collegiate eight men’s race on Sunday morning.
