VARSITY FINISHES STRONG AT HEAD OF GENESEE Oct. 9: The St. Lawrence men’s varsity crew team raced for the first time in their 2007-2008 campaign this weekend and had solid races with two un-stacked boats placing 18th and 20th overall at the Head of the Genesee Regatta in Rochester, NY on Sunday.
The Saints A boat, who finished the 5000-meter head piece in 17:08.72 and the 1500-meter sprint in 4:57.61, consisted of sophomore Brendan Kiniry, senior Brent Davis, first-year David MacClaren, sophomore Jamie Harrison, junior Seth Corliss, sophomore James Herrington seniors Seth Hussey and Kit Wright, and junior coxswain Samantha Levitan.
The B boat raced to a 17:14.08 in the head piece, which placed them right behind the Saints A boat, and the two boats went head-to-head in the sprint piece in the afternoon, with the A boat winning by just under two seconds.
Saints’ B boat included senior Lawson Condrey, sophomore Alic Kelso, junior Liam Delahanty, senior Andrew Lagos, sophomore Paul Stapell, junior Matt Sonagere, seniors Tedd Rama and Evan Smith, and first-year coxswain Alexandra Palmisano.
Both crews finished ahead of one Ithaca boat, a boat from RIT and Liberty League competitor Vassar.
Saints head men’s coach George Repicky was pleased with how the varsity did this weekend. “The guys were not allowed to go above a 28 until the last 30 strokes of the race. I think that was a pretty severe handicap for them as lots of crews were racing higher then that, but we're taking the time this fall to really work on improving our connection.”
Both men’s varsity and novice crew teams will travel to Geneva, NY this weekend to compete in the Hobart William Smith Challenge on Saturday, October 13 th.
