SAINTS COMPETE AT

HEAD OF THE FISH REGATTA

Oct. 29: The St. Lawrence University men’s crew team competed at the 22nd annual Head of the Fish Regatta on Sunday in Saratoga Springs, NY, where the men’s varsity team had two eight boats compete, while the novice raced one eight boat and two fours on the 3,500-meter course.

The men’s varsity team entered two boats into the men’s collegiate varsity 8 race. The first boat finished ahead of Liberty League opponents Clarkson and Vassar with a time of 11:12.22, placing them sixth out of 15 crews. Rowers included seniors Kyle Emery and Brent Davis, sophomores Brendan Kiniry and Jamie Harrison, junior Seth Corliss, sophomore James Herrington, seniors Seth Hussey and Kit Wright, and junior coxswain Mike Syslo.

The second eight boat consisted of senior Lawson Condrey, sophomore Alic Kelso, junior Liam Delahanty, senior Andrew Lagos, sophomore Paul Stapell, junior Matt Sonagere, seniors Tedd Rama and Evan Smith, and first-year coxswain Alexandra Palmisano. They clocked in with a time of 11:28.65, putting them in 10 th place ahead of RPI and Union.

“Both of the varsity crews came off the water very pleased with how the boats rowed at the higher rates.” Head Coach George Repicky said. “I think that spending all of the fall working in even boats and at the lower rates has really paid off in how the guys are rowing. It should make for some fast boats this spring.”

In the novice races, the eight boat finished 6th out of 21 teams in the men’s collegiate novice 8 race, with a time of 11:53.26. The boat included first years Nelson Hoffman, Cam West, Joey Colagrossi, Greg Gotta, Brendan McGrath, Dave MacClaren, sophomore Oke McAndrews, first years Nick Blum and coxswain Alyssa Halton. The boat finished ahead of RPI, Vassar, Clarkson, and Skidmore.

“The novice men had a real solid season,” Repicky said. “We have the biggest novice men’s team ever and all of them will be able to compete for seats in the first frosh 8+.”

“Because of the time we spend this fall in 6s and at low rates I don’t think that we have seen their true speed yet.”

The men’s collegiate novice four race saw two boats from the Saints who finished within seconds of each other. The Saints’ A boat had first year rowers Colagrossi, Cody Witherell, Gotta, Johnny Chestnut, and coxswain Halton, who clocked in at a 14:14.89. The B boat included first years Matt Woodard, Ben Burds, Casey O’Brien, Blum, and first year coxswain Allison Webster and finished 9 th with a 14:16.31.

Overall, Repicky was thrilled with his team’s fall season. “As a team we made great strides in technique. The team is the biggest we’ve ever had here at St. Lawrence and the level of commitment within this group is just outstanding. I can’t wait to get to Florida and see how fast we can makes these boats go.”

The Head of the Fish Regatta was the last race for the men in the fall 2007 season. They team will begin competition once again in the early spring of 2008.
