WEINEKE LEADS TEAM POUNDTOWN
TO 2006 QUADATHLON VICTORY
Oct. 10: For the first time in St. Lawrence University history, the SLU Quadathlon ended in a tie between Team Poundtown and the Alpine Skiing All-Stars. The event, which consists of four different legs including running, swimming, canoeing, and biking, was extended to a one-on-one 100 meter dash after negotiations between the top two teams.

Director of Intramurals and head men's Cross Country coach John Newman organized the run off, and was extremely excited to see Quadathlon history in the making. "After both teams put in such hard work, we had to see which team had the will to win the event out-right," said Newman. "After a discussion with the National Board of Quadathlon President, we decided on an even 100 meter dash between one member of each team of their choosing to determine the champions."

Team Poundtown sent SAAC Chair Mike Weineke as their team representative, while All-Star's captain Billy Montague chose Dave Slungaard to race for the championship. Team Poundtown was also comprised of Julian Holland, Ted Rama, Jamie O'Donnell, and Kit Wright, while their opponents included Kristen Ehringer, Graham Flinn, Eric Morgan, Dave Slungaard, and Montague.

With Associate Director of Athletics Mike Howard starting the race, the two athletes ran stride for stride through the first 98 meters. As the judges began sweating out the possibility of a photo finish, Weineke inched out an advantage with a slight lean to send Team Poundtown to victory.

"I was thoroughly impressed with Mike, as he both represented his team in the pool, but continued to compete as an Iron Man in the event," said Newman. "His commitment to the integrity of the Quadathlon was exemplified by his ability to step forward and represent his team in the fifth event." Weineke was the eventual Iron Man Champion for individuals.

Other impressive finishes include third place team Blazing Saddles (Annie Massie, Doug Brown, Sarah Lauridsen, Gabe Cohen, and Teddy Walter), who were victorious in the mixed division, and fourth place team Double X (Berra Roy, Amy Laverack, Meg Williams, Callie Douglas, and Lia Prysunka) who were the winners of the All-Female Division.

The Faculty-Staff winners, who have been competing and supporting the Quadathlon for 21 years, were the Comeback Kids. Team members included Kate Pearson, Caroline Pearson, Bob Northrup, Bill Pearson, and Sue Northrup.

Over 120 people took part in the 2006 SLU Quadathlon, and Newman said he is excited for 2007 already. "The 2007 Quadathlon date is already set for Columbus Day, and as always, we will have hot cocoa and fresh donuts waiting at the finish line. And yes, the Quadathlon does promote making healthy choices and clean fun."
