NEW TEAM REIGNS AS 2007 QUADATHLON CHAMPIONS

Oct. 9: For the past 22 years, Columbus Day has represented something epic at St. Lawrence University. It has meant something more than a national holiday to any true Saint because anyone who is anyone knows that on that fateful Monday in Canton, New York in early October, champions are born. The elite of St. Lawrence come out and compete for the infamous t-shirt, a year’s worth of bragging rights and the coveted title that only a select few are able to earn each year: the St. Lawrence’s annual Quadathlon champion title.

The event, which consists of four legs, including a 500-yard swim, 5-mile bike, one mile canoe and a two-mile run, was just as competitive, if not more, than years past with 29 teams vying for the top spot on the podium. Chemistry Team Aurum, which consisted of senior Stephanie Walter, sophomore Geoffrey Millard, Assistant Professor of Chemistry Matthew Skeels, and junior Matthew Millard smoked the competition in this year’s event, winning overall and in the open category, with a combined time of 45:24, defeating defending 2006 champion Team Poundtown by more than two and a half minutes, finishing with a time of 48:11.

The SLU Ski Mixed team took home the title in the mixed category. The team, which consisted of first-year Arla Casselman, junior Ben Knowles, Seniors Kallie Dunn and Robin Brooks, and sophomore Brian Pepper, came in fourth overall with a time of 50:27.

And while having experience in the annual Quadathlon is usually a big advantage for the upperclassmen, a number of first-year students went home Quadathlon champions. The winner of the All-Female divison was the SLUSKI Freshmen Girls, which included first year students Caitlin Smith, Sophie Allen, Libby Haden, and Hannah James. The team clocked in with a final time of 54:10, which placed them tenth overall.

First year students Tara Hetz and Anna Rehm used the Quadathlon to show St. Lawrence what the first year class could really do as both girls entered as Iron Women and powered through all four legs of the race, ending in a tie with both Hetz and Rehm coming in at 1:18.16.

Saints basketball assistant coach Keith Sullivan was the winner on the men’s side for the Iron Man, completing the race in an impressive time of 1:10.13.

A number of faculty and staff at St. Lawrence also took part in this tradition, and the Saints Track and Field camp team came out on top in their category with a final time of 56:22. The team consisted of track assistant coaches Matt Kuenzel and Erin Woodward, head cross-country coach John Newman, and associate athletic director and head track and field coach Mike Howard.

Newman, who is also the Director of Intramurals, was thrilled, not only with his team’s victory, but with the outcome of the entire event. “Despite the weather, we had a great turn out,” he says. “We’re looking forward to Columbus Day 2008 and hope everyone will bring their teams and their A-game.”
