Allen Van Alstyne '51
Baseball, Basketball
A starter on the Saint basketball team which upset the Syracuse
Nationals of the National Basketball Association in 1950, Al Van
Alstyne was an outstanding baseball player as well and had a seven
year professional baseball career.
Al entered St. Lawrence after serving in the Phillipines
in the Navy in 1945-46. He was an outstanding student as well
as an excellent basketball and baseball player and was named to
Who's Who in American Colleges and was vice president of the L
Club. He led the baseball team in hitting as a sophomore and junior
and hit a grand slam home run in a game against Vermont. He signed
with the Boston Red Sox at the end of his junior season and started
both the 1954 and 1955 seasons with the major league team. He
spent much of his career in the minors and earned all star recognition
playing for San Jose and Albany.
A retired financial planner for the Cigna Insurance
Company, he earned his CLU degree at Albany Law School and is
a lifetime member of the Presidents Club of Cigna Life Insurance
Company.
