2006: Welkley carried his rookie season success into his sophmore campaign, as the Tonawanda, NY native received Honorable Mention Status on the Liberty League's All Defense unit. In nine games, Welkley set new career-highs in unassisted tackles (26), assisted tackles (8), total tackles (34) and pass break-ups (9). He also notched two tackles for a loss, including a solo tackle against Johns Hopkins. Welkley also earned a spot on the Liberty League All-Academic Team for his efforts in the classroom.
2005: Welkley moved into a starting role at cornerback midway through his rookie season. He played in all nine games, starting five, and was named the team's Rookie of the Year. In addition to playing in the secondary, he saw time on special teams. He registered 24 tackles, including 19 solo stops. Welkley also had nine pass break-ups and intercepted two passes. His first career interception came in the Saints game at RPI, Welkley picked off a pass in the endzone, stopping RPI's drive and preventing a touchdown.

At Tonawanda High
Welkley was a three-sport athlete, competing in football, basketball, and track & field. He earned first-team all-division, third-team All-Western NY, and first-team All-Academic All-Western NY honors. He also captained the football and basketball teams.
