MATTISON STARS AS
SAINTS REBOUND WITH WIN
Sept. 21: First year field hockey forward Ali Mattison had the biggest
goal-scoring day since the fall of 2000 as she scored four goals,
including a natural hat trick with three straight to end the game,
leading the Saints to a 5-1 win over Manhattanville in the second
game of the William Smith Invitational on Sunday.
The Saints, now 3-2 on the season, dominated the
game from the outset, outshooting Manhattanville 26-9 and holding
a 15-4 edge in corners for the game. Saint goaltender Sarah Rohrs
needed just three saves for her first win of the season in her first
start while April Yeomans had 14 saves for Manhattanville.
Mattison scored her first collegiate goal from Nicola
Reid 16:25 into the game as she converted off a long cross field
pass to the middle with a hard shot past Yeomans. Sophomore Liz
Allison made it a 2-0 game with her second of the year from Abigail
Copeland and Reid off a penalty corner at 27:43 to give the Saints
a 2-0 halftime lead.
While Dionne Jones got one back for Manhattanville
from Ali Van Horn in a scramble in front of Rohrs at 40:27, Mattison
put the game away with three straight goals.
The first came at 47:24 as she redirected a pass
from Tiffany Elsenbeck past the goaltender and she scored her third
of the game at 50:36 off a pretty pass in front by Jamie Mara, setting
up a point-blank shot. Mattison scored her fourth, matching the
four-goal effort of Stacy Turner in the 2000 New York State tournament
semifinals against Vassar, at the 58:40 mark, scoring on a shot
from the top of the arch which was set up by Saeger Philpot.
The Saints will open UCAA competition at home Friday
and Saturday hosting William Smith and Rochester.
SAINT RALLY COMES
SHORT AGAINST
20TH RANKED SUSQUEHANNA
Sept. 20: St. Lawrence University's field hockey team fell behind
20th-ranked Susquehanna 2-0 in the first half and then came up short
in a second half rally, bowing 2-1 in a game at the William Smith
Invitational.
The Saints, now 2-2, will play Manhattanville, a 5-0
loser to William Smith, at 11 a.m. Sunday.
The Saints were outshot 8-0 in the first half as Susquehanna grabbed
the lead on a pair of rebound put-backs off initial saves by Amelia
Gomez. Ashley Kroft scored her second of the year 7:26 into the
game and Jenni Iacovone made it 2-0 with her first of the season
at 23:49.
The Saints opened up their offense in the second half and outshot
Susquehanna 8-5. Sophomore Abigail Copeland made it a 2-1 game at
44:57 when she scored her second goal in as many games on a blast
from the top of the circle on a penalty corner with Liz Allison
and Nicola Reid assisting, but despite some good chances, that was
as close as the Saints were able to get.
Shannon Baker finished with four saves for Susquehanna while the
two teams finished the game even in penalty corners at 7-7.
