LLOYD PACES SAINTS
TO 5-1 FIELD HOCKEY VICTORY OVER OSWEGO
Sept. 12: Junior forward Erin Lloyd
scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season and set up two
others as St. Lawrence University's field hockey team jumped out
to an early lead and rolled to a 5-1 win over Oswego in its home
opener Friday afternoon.
The Saints, now 2-1
on the season, scored off four penalty corners and received goals
from five different players in the game. Abi Copeland and Nicola
Reid had a goal and an assist each while Liz Allison and Jenny Heffler
added goals and Tiffany Elsenbeck had an assist.
The Saints jumped out
to a 3-0 lead in the first half as Lloyd scored from Elsenbeck on
an up-field rush 12:39 into the game and Reid made it 2-0 with the
game 28:08 old when she converted from Copeland off a penalty corner.
It went to 3-0 when Heffler redirected a pass from Ali Mattison
past Oswego goalie Ashley Perkins with Reid also assisting off a
penalty corner just 1:21 later.
St. Lawrence made it
a 4-0 game when Allison scored her first of the year off a rebound
put-back from Lloyd following a penalty corne 4:28 into the second
half, but Oswego cashed in after a penalty corner of its own as
Laura Benjamin scored her first of the year in a scramble with 15:30
to play in the game.
Copeland, who missed
all of last season while recovering from knee surgery, scored her
first collegiate goal on a hard shot from the top of the circle
from Lloyd off a penalty corner with 1:42 to play to complete the
scoring.
"We did a good
job on the penalty corners and had some other great chances that
we either just missed or their goalie stopped," said Saint
coach Fran Grembowicz. "We are making progress and seeing a
lot of good things out there."
Perkins, who made several
outstanding saves in the game, finished with 11 for the afternoon
while Saint goalie Amelia Gomez had four saves before giving way
to Sarah Rohrs who played the last 6:30 without seeing a shot.
St. Lawrence outshot
Oswego 25-7 and had a 16-5 edge in penalty corners.
The Saints will play
Manhattanville and Susquehanna at William Smith next Saturday and
Sunday.
