FIELD HOCKEY TEAM PREPS FOR OPENER

St. Lawrence University's field hockey team will participate in a series of scrimmages in Stowe, VT this weekend to prepare for the start of the regular season with a 7 p.m. game against Oswego on Saturday, Sept. 9.

The Saints, who graduated just one player from last season's 8-8 squad, will host Oswego in the first night game on North Country Field to begin a 15-game regular season schedule. St. Lawrence lost to Ithaca in the quarterfinals of the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association tournament last fall and will be out to make their 14th consecutive post-season appearance at the end of the current campaign.

Coach Fran Grembowicz is hoping for improved offensive output this season as the Saints scored just 1.6 goals per game last season. Junior Stacy Turner is the leading returning scorer after a 10 goal, eight assist sophomore season which included three game winning goals. She enters her junior year with 14 goals and 13 assists for her career and was a first-team All UCAA selection in 1999. Lindsay Wormwood, also a junior, chipped in with four goals and four assists last season. Grembowicz is hoping for increased output from senior forward Tierney O'Meara, who had two goals and an assist last year after a four-goal sophomore campaign, plus help from some promising newcomers.

Other veteran forwards include junior Lauren Frye (2-1-5) and sophomore Lauren Greene (2-1-5). Nicola Reid, who can play either forward or midfield, is a freshman standout and was a member of the Jamaican Junior National team while freshman forward Jill Cabral was All League and Jen Heffler, the youngest sister of Saint All America men's hockey goalie Eric Heffler and former Saint field hockey player Missy Heffler was both All State and All Western New York at forward. Marygrace Balben, a multi-sport standout from Wayland, MA, will also battle for a regular spot at forward.

Junior captain Beth Lomanto, sophomore Val Angelichio and sophomore Julie Zingerline return at midfield and the Saints have a number of players who can play either midfield for back to join them. Senior captain Catherine Bush, sophomore Michelle Circelli, senior Jessica Johnson and sophomore Rachel Kelley all return along with sophomore Mary Amidon, who can play either forward or midfield.

Senior Amanda Bolton returns at back and will be joined by freshman candidates Jen Mascavage, a member of the Massachusetts State Champion Greenfield team; Megan Mellow and Page Schmucker, an all-league player from Pennsylvania.

Senior Kendra Mason, who was 4-4 with an .803 save percentage last season, gives the Saints experience in goal while freshman Amelia Gomez will push for playing time as the backup.
