Traditionally one of St. Lawrence's most frequent post-season participants with 18 straight appearances, the Saint field hockey program has gone 61-28 over the last five seasons and has won two Eastern College Athletic Conference Mid-Atlantic championships (2000, 2002) and been an NCAA Regional Finalist (2001).
The Saints, who have been frequent participants in the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association tournament and won their first NYSWCAA title in 2000, compete in the Liberty League, a league which has been well represented in NCAA tournament play the last several seasons.. The Liberty Leagueincludes Hamilton, Rennselaer, Rochester, Skidmore, Vassar and William Smith in addition to the Saints and awards an automatic NCAA qualification bid to the winner of a four-team tournament to conclude the regular season. The Saints were 2004 Liberty League Tournament runners-up.
The Saints are perennially among the top finishers in league competition and also play an outstanding non-league schedule which includes perennial Division III challenger Cortland State among others.
The Saints play their home games on North Country Field, a new artificial surface facility which includes lights for early evening competition. The Saints have won 85 percent of their games on the new surface since its first season of use in 2000.
In addition to team success, the Saint program has produced a number of All America players including two-time first team All America Stacy Turner, who led the nation in scoring as a junior and holds all the Saint scoring records in both field hockey and lacrosse. Turner's junior season included 31 goals, 8th all-time in Division III and 78 points, the fourth-best single season total in Division III history. She finished her field hockey career with 61 goals and 35 assists for 157 points, all SLU records. Nicola Reid completed her Saint career with three straight national All America designations and was a third team choice in the fall of 2003. |
