PAYE LIFTS HERONS TO 3-2 WIN OVER SAINTS Sept. 21: William Smith senior midfielder Brittany Paye scored off a penalty corner with 6:42 gone in the second overtime period to lift the 11 th-ranked Herons to a 3-2 Liberty League field hockey victory over 20 th-ranked St. Lawrence in a battle of the unbeatens Friday afternoon.
All three of the Heron goals in the game came following penalty corners as William Smith spoiled a comeback by the Saints, who trailed 2-0 with just over 20 minutes to play in the game.
Paye took a shot from just inside the top of the circle with 8:18 left to go in the second overtime after stopping the penalty corner insertion by junior Kelsey Landahl. The Saints had earlier had a chance to end the game in the second overtime as Heron goalie Katie DeKraker saved a shot by Saint rookie Meg Danielson.
William Smith, 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the Liberty League opened the scoring when sophomore Kaitlyn Hamilton put the ball past Saint goaltender Lindsey Taylor in a scramble in front of the Saint net after a Heron penalty corner. First year Brittany Furlong assisted on the goal which cane 23:25 into play.
The Herons made it a 2-0 game with 49:06 gone in the game, again cashing in on a penalty corner. Paye sent the ball to Furlong at the top of the circle and Furlong’s shot deflected into the net off Saint defenders.
St. Lawrence, which had put just two shots on goal in the first 52 minutes, rallied with goals under two minutes apart later in the second half.
Sophomore Lydia Gibson scored her second of the year when she deflected a pass by Mackenzie Kersen into the upper corner at 57:31 and first year Caitlin Estes was credited with her first collegiate goal at 59:05 when her shot off a pass by Julia Kiernan deflected off a Heron defender and into the cage.
The Saints, who dominated play after their first goal, had a goal waved off with 4:34 to go when a redirection off a save was ruled a high stick. Saint sophomore defender Jen Stetson helped the Saints force overtime when she made a defensive save when Landahl got a shot behind Taylor with 2:13 to play, but Stetson stopped it on the goal line.
The Saints outshot William Smith 6-1 in the first 15 minute overtime with the teams playing seven on seven, but DeKraker made two saves and the rest were wide.
DeKraker finished with nine saves for William Smith while Taylor had eight for the Saints. William Smith had a 23-21 edge in total shots and a 10-6 edge in penalty corners.
SLU will host Rochester in a Liberty League game at 2 p.m. Saturday while William Smith plays at Hamilton. |
