SAINTS BEAT HARTWICK ON PENALTY STROKES, 2-1 Oct. 13: The second time was a charm for St. Lawrence University’s field hockey team when it came to penalty strokes to decide a tie game.
Jen Stetson, Lydia Gibson and Brooke Maloney were successful in the penalty stroke shootout and Hartwick was successful on just one of four tries to give the Saints a 3-1 advantage in the shootout and a 2-1 win over the Hawks in a non-league field hockey game at Hartwick on Saturday.
It was just the second time a Saint game has gone to a shootout since that tie-breaker was introduced. Geneseo beat the Saints 4-3 in a shootout and won a 3-2 decision in September of 2006.
The Saints, ranked 20th nationally, improved to 9-2 with the marathon victory which included two 15-minute periods of overtime, the teams playing seven-on-seven. The 9-2 start is the best since 2001. The Saints will take on 7th ranked Middlebury in a 6:30 p.m. game Tuesday on North Country Field.
St. Lawrence opened the scoring 22:08 into play as first year Kristi Onzik scored her third of the season from Mackenzie Kersen off a penalty corner. Hartwick’s Lindsay Kurtz tied the game with 17:35 to go in regulation on a penalty shot.
The Saints outshot Hartwick 13-10 for the game and the Hawks had a 12-11 edge in penalty corners. The Saints had a 3-2 edge in shots in the first overtime period and had the only two shots of the second overtime period, but could not get the ball past goalie Katie Thorpe until the shootout.
Stetson shot first for the Saints and scored and Gibson was also successful as the second shooter. Lindsey Taylor stopped two Hartwick shots before Kurtz was successful for the Hawks, but Maloney scored for the Saints and Hartwick missed its next two to give the Saints the shootout win.
Taylor finished with six saves while Thorpe made 10 for Hartwick, now 7-6 on the season.
The Saints will host ninth ranked Middlebury at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday on North Country Field.
