DELANEY SCORES TWO AS SAINTS SWEEP

Sept. 2: Senior Carling Delaney scored two goals on deflections in the first half and St. Lawrence University’s field hockey team held off a late Utica College rally for a 2-1 win and a sweep of its games in Field Hockey Fest 2007 at SLU’s North Country Field on Sunday.

The Saints, who beat Oneonta 4-3 in overtime on Saturday, completed the two-day set of games with a 2-0 record while Utica and Oneonta, a 5-0 winner over Neumann College in the first Sunday game, went 1-1. Saint first year forward Meg Danielson was named Liberty League co-Rookie of the Week for her performance in the two weekend games.

Delaney scored both of her goals on deflections at the post off penalty corners as the Saints dominated the first half and played a solid defensive game in front of senior goaltender Lindsey Taylor.

Delaney scored her first goal with 17:12 gone as Mackenzie Kersen took a shot off a penalty corner from just inside the top of the circle and Delaney redirected it past Utica goalie Amanda McDonnell. She scored her second, deflecting a ball out of the air and into the goal after Christa Chadwick took the initial shot on a penalty corner at 19:31.

The Saints outshot Utica 16-5 in the first half and allowed the Pioneers only three shots on goal for the entire game. The Saints finished the game with a 21-8 edge in total shots.

Utica did make things interesting when Theresa Staring deflected a ball out of the air and into the cage after Tiffany Bichrest sent it into the circle with 2:53 to play in the game, but the Saints did not allow another Utica shot despite some Pioneer pressure in the Saint defensive zone in the final minutes of play.

Taylor finished with two saves for the Saints while McDonnell had eight in just over 60 minutes of action and Margaret Wright had three in the final 9;56 for the Pioneers.

St. Lawrence had five penalty corners to three for Utica.

The Saints will return to action on Sept. 8 when they host Nazareth.

KIERNAN LIFTS SAINTS IN OVERTIME, 4-3

Sept. 1: Senior Julia Kiernan scored on a diving shot 4:03 into overtime to lift St. Lawrence University to a 4-3 college field hockey win over SUNY Oneonta in the season opener for both teams.

Kiernan, who also had two assists in the game, dove for a ball in front of the Oneonta cage with the teams playing seven-vs.-seven in the overtime period and flicked it off the shaft of her stick and off the pad of Red Dragon goalie Erika Dombrowski to give the Saints the win in game two of the Field Hockey Fest being played at SLU’s North Country Field. Utica College beat Neumann College 3-0 in the first game of the day.

St. Lawrence will play Utica at 1:30 Sunday following an 11 a.m. meeting between Oneonta and Neumann.

The Saints came back from an early 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead in the second half, but Oneonta tied it with 15:14 to go in regulation to force the extra period. SLU had a chance to win it when Kiernan led a three-player rush on the Oneonta goal with just under seven minutes to play, but her pass just eluded a teammate at the far post for what would have been an easy tip-in. The Red Dragons had a chance to win it with no time remaining on a penalty corner, but the Saint defense did not allow a shot on goal.

Oneonta opened the scoring just 1:28 into the game as Marissa Chiapperino took her own rebound off the pad of Saint goalie Lindsey Taylor and put it back into the goal for the early lead. Ainsley Stoll made it a 2-0 game in a scramble following a penalty corner 19:03 into play, and while the Saints had an apparent goal on a shot by Krista Chadwick on a penalty corner waved off, Jen Stetson scored from Kiernan off a penalty corner with just under ten minutes to play in the first half to put the Saints on the board.

St. Lawrence, which dominated the final 15 minutes of the first period, tied the game 7:27 into the second as rookie Meg Danielson scored her first collegiate goal with a shot just inside the post off a feed by Kiernan. Sophomore Joss-Elyse Smith scored from in close at 54:16 to put the Saints in front, but Oneonta tied it again when Ashley Valentine scored in a scramble following a penalty corner at 54:16.

St. Lawrence outshot Oneonta 26-16 and had a 12-9 edge in penalty corners. Dombrowski made 14 saves for Oneonta while Taylor had 10 for the Saints.

SAINTS OPEN 2007 SEASON VS. ONEONTA

Aug. 31: St. Lawrence University’s field hockey team will embark on its 34 th season of intercollegiate play Saturday and Sunday as the Saints host SUNY Oneonta, Utica College and Neumann College at North Country Field. The Saints will play their season opener at 2:30 p.m. Saturday against Oneonta, following a 12 p.m. game between Utica and Neumann. Oneonta will play Neumann at 11 a.m. Sunday and the Saints will take on Utica at 1:30 p.m.

The Saints are coming off a 11-6 2006 season in which they finished as Liberty League regular season co-champions and tournament runner-up. The Saints, who were 6-1 in Liberty League play, made their second tournament championship game appearance in the last five years. Coach Fran Grembowicz has led her teams to winning seasons in seven straight seasons and takes a career record of 96-58 into the 2007 season opener.

Two returning regional All America players will lead the Saints into the 2007 season as senior goaltender Lindsey Taylor and midfielder Julia Kiernan are among five seniors on the roster. Taylor played every game last season, compiling a 1.55 goals against average and a .828 save percentage. Kiernan is coming off her most productive year offensively after scoring a goal and assisting on seven others as a junior and is an outstanding defender who will give the Saints a strong presence in the middle of the field.

Mackenzie Ewing and Mary Roseen lend additional experience to the Saint defensive unit as both are four-year regulars with forward Carling Delaney rounding out the senior class and looking forward to a big year offensively. Delaney scored three goals and assisted on two others last year and has five goals in her last two seasons.

While the Saints graduated three of their top four scorers from last year, they return sophomore Joss-Elyse Smith, who had eight goals and three assists for 19 points in an outstanding rookie season. Juniors Michelle Verrochi, Caroline Buskey and Krista Chadwick join sophomores Mackenzie Kersten, Lydia Gibson and Jen Stetson as other experienced returnees.

A quartet of newcomers who are part of a strong recruiting class will play a key role in the Saint offense this season. Caitlin Estes, a first-team all state player in New Hampshire, Meg Danielson, a first-team Vermont all state player and Metro Division Player of the Year in 2006; Kristi Onzik, a three-time Wisconsin all-state player and Brooke Maloney, who was first team all state in Connecticut and the state tournament MVP as a senior will all play an integral role in the Saint attack.

“All of our first-year players are going to add depth and spark to the program,” said Grembowicz. “We are really pleased with our incoming group and we are looking forward to getting the season underway.”
