BURKE LIFTS SAINTS TO 1-0 WIN OVER UR Sept. 22: Sophomore Rachel Burke scored her first collegiate goal 6:50 into the second half and the Saint defense made it stand up as the game winner as St. Lawrence University’s field hockey team bounced back from a heartbreaking double overtime loss to William Smith with a 1-0 win over Rochester in a Liberty League game on Saturday.
The Saints, ranked 20 th nationally, dominated the game but Rochester goalie Rachel Cahan kept her team in contention with a 14-save effort. SLU improves to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in the Liberty League while Rochester is now 5-2 overall and also 1-1 in league play.
Burke, who did not play last season, tapped home a ball sent in front by sophomore forward Joss-Elyse Smith at the 41:50 mark for the only shot to officially get past goaltender Cahan. Saint senior Carling Delaney tipped a shot by Smith past a diving Cahan with time running out in the first half, but it was ruled that the goal came after time had expired in the half.
The Saints dominated the first half, outshooting Rochester 18-3 and had seven corners to none for the Yellowjackets. Rochester challenged the Saint defense late in the game, but senior goalie Lindsey Taylor came up with four of her seven saves in the game in the last three minutes as Rochester flurried a series of shots off penalty corners.
Julia Kiernan, Jen Stetson, Krista Chadwick and Mackenzie Ewing all turned in strong defensive performances for the Saints who outshot Rochester 29-12 and had 12 corners to five for the Yellowjackets for the day.
