SAINTS EARN NATIONAL, LEAGUE HONORS Oct. 23: Sophomore defender Jen Stetson and first year forward Meg Danielson were selected as national Player
of the Week and Rookie of the Week by the national web site Womens Field Hockey.com and were joined by first year forward Kristi Onzik in earning league awards.
The Saints moved up to 16th in the nation in the NFHCA poll and will take on 8th-ranked Cortland on Wednesday on North Country FIeld.
Stetson, who assisted on a goal in the Saints 4-3 win over 7 th-ranked Middlebury and scored a goal in a 2-1 win at Union to go with four defensive saves in a 3-0 week for the Saints was named www.womensfieldhockey.com’s Division III Player of the Week and was named as Liberty League co-Defensive Player of the Week. The sophomore back from Bristol, VT has four goals and an assist as she moves up from her defensive position to play on the Saints’ penalty corner unit and has also taken two penalty strokes this season. She leads the team in defensive saves with eight as the Saints have matched the best regular season record in program history at 12-2.
Danielson, from Shelburne, VT, was the www.womensfieldhockey.com Division III Rookie of the Week and the Liberty League co-Offensive Player of the Week. She scored two goals in the win over Middlebury, including the game winner off a penalty corner with no time remaining on the clock. She assisted on the game-winning goal at Union and scored a goal in a 2-1 win at 16 th ranked Skidmore to finish the week with three goals and two assists. She is the leading scorer for the Saints with seven goals and three assists in 14 games.
Onzik, who is from Delafield, WI, was named Liberty League Rookie of the Week after three solid performances in the 3-0 week which included a goal and an assist on the game winner in the Middlebury game.
SAINTS CLINCH 2 ND IN LIBERTY LEAGUE Oct. 20: Sophomore Rachel Burke scored her second goal of the season with three minutes to go in regulation time to give St. Lawrence University’s field hockey team a 2-1 win at Skidmore College Saturday in a showdown for second place in the Liberty League.
Burke’s goal, which was also her second game-winner of the year, propelled the Saints to their sixth straight win. She put away her own rebound in a three-shot flurry against Skidmore goalie Liz Catinella, who stopped the first two shots, but couldn’t get to the third.
The Saints finish their Liberty League season with a 5-2 record, which is matched by Skidmore, but the Saints win the tiebreaker by virtue of Saturday’s 2-1 win. The two teams will meet again in the Liberty League semifinals at William Smith on November 2.
SLU, now 12-2, have matched the best regular season record in program history and will host 9 th ranked Cortland on Wednesday and conclude the regular season with Geneseo at home on the 27 th. The Saints went into last week’s action ranked 20 th nationally, but are likely to move up with wins over seventh-ranked Middlebury and 16 th-ranked Skidmore.
Meg Danielson scored her seventh goal of the year and third of the week on a breakaway to open the scoring at Skidmore. The first-year forward scored the game-winning goal in overtime in a 4-3 win over 7 th-ranked Middlebury as part of a two-goal game, assisted on the overtime game winner at Union on Friday and put the Saints on the board 1:08 into the second half on Saturday.
Skidmore came back to tie the game when Jess Bergen scored with a putback of her own rebound with 55:23 gone, but Burke came through with the game winner and the Saint defense continued an outstanding performance which allowed the Thoroughbreds, the league’s second most prolific team when it comes to shots and shots on goal just nine total shots and only four on goal.
Saint goalie Lindsey Taylor made three saves for the win while Catinella had seven stops for Skidmore. SLU outshot the Thoroughbreds 11-9 overall while Skidmore had a 6-4 edge in corners.
SAINTS WIN IN ANOTHER THRILLER; CLINCH LIBERTY LEAGUE PLAYOFFS Oct. 19: The St. Lawrence University field hockey team came through with another cliff-hanging victory Friday afternoon as Jen Stetson tied the game with under 12 minutes to play and Julia Kiernan scored her second overtime game-winner of the year in a 2-1 victory at Union.
The Saints, 11-2 overall and 4-2 in the Liberty League heading into a Saturday game at second-place Skidmore (5-1) have guaranteed themselves a spot in the league tournament and could finish as high as second with a win on Saturday. Union, 10-5 overall and 3-3 in the league, needs a win on Saturday against Hamilton to assure itself of a tourney spot.
The Dutchwomen outshot the Saints 19-6 in regulation time, but only nine of the 19 shots were on goal and Saint goalie Lindsey Taylor turned away eight of them in a strong effort.
Union opened the scoring when Kelsey Powers deflected a shot by Lizzy Moran on a penalty corner, redirecting it into the upper corner 11:40 into the second half. The Saints came back to tie it as Stetson scored her fourth of the year on a shot from the top of the circle on a penalty corner from Mackenzie Kersen with 59:12 gone in the game. It stayed deadlocked the rest of the way, although Union did have two penalty corners in the last minute. The Saint defense did not allow a shot on goal on either corner and the game headed into overtime.
The Saints forced a penalty corner just over two minutes into the extra session, and while they did not score, they kept possession in the Union end and won the game when Meg Danielson sent a pass to Kiernan who was about 20 yards out. Kiernan’s shot through traffic in front beat Union goalie Liz Stanford at 73:34 to give the Saints their fifth straight win.
Stanford finished with four saves for the Dutchwomen, who finished the game with a 19-8 overall edge in shots and an 11-8 advantage in penalty corners.
