SAINTS 5-0 AFTER SHUTOUT OF OBERLIN; MAKE NATIONAL POLL APPEARANCE Sept. 16: Carling Delaney scored two goals and St. Lawrence University’s field hockey team dominated from start to finish in a 5-0 shutout of Oberlin at the Heron Invitational at William Smith Sunday as the Saints improved to 5-0 on the season.
SLU, which will open Liberty League play against William Smith in Canton at 4 p.m. Friday with Rochester to follow at 2 p.m. Saturday, outshot Oberlin 27-2 and had 10 penalty corners to two for the Yeowomen.
The Saints made their first appearance in the national polls on Tuesday, debuting at 20th in the Styx/NFCHA poll. William Smith is 12th nationally heading into Friday's showdown.
Additionally, senior midfielder Julia Kiernan was named Liberty League Co-Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts in the sweep of Oberlin and Susquehanna.
Delaney gave the Saints the early lead 8:21 into the game as she tipped a crossing pass and the ball went between the pads of Oberlin goalie Lauren Malinowski, who kicked the ball into the net with her heel. Delaney then scored her second of the game and fourth of the season just 57 seconds later, poking home a rebound from point blank range.
Senior midfielder Julia Kiernan scored her second of the year with 16:53 gone with a blast from just inside the circle to make it a 3-0 game at the intermission.
First year Meg Danielson scored her third of the year on a breakaway at the 48:11 mark and sophomore Lydia Gibson scored her first collegiate goal, putting away her own rebound after a tip by the goalkeeper with 1:57 to go in the game.
Malinowski made 16 saves for Oberlin in just over 64 minutes of play while Sheera Bornstein made one save in six minutes of relief. Saint goaltenders Lindsey Taylor and Lilly Callahan shared the shutout without seeing a shot on goal in the game.
SAINTS WIN FOURTH STRAIGHT, 4-1 OVER SUSQUEHANNA Sept. 15: St. Lawrence University’s field hockey team won its fourth straight game to start the 2007 season, beating Susquehanna 4-1 in a game at the Heron Invitational at William Smith on Saturday.
The Saints will play Oberlin in their second game of the two-game weekend set at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Joss-Elyse Smith led the Saints to the win, scoring one goal and assisting on another and the Saint defense was solid, allowing Susquehanna just five shots for the game.
Jen Stetson opened the scoring for the Saints as she moved up from her defensive position and scored her second goal of the year on a penalty stroke with the game 12:31 old. Smith then made it a 2-0 game with 47 seconds to go in the fist half as Julia Kiernan blocked a hit out, sent it back into the circle and Smith snapped it past goalie Lyndsey Meabon for her fourth goal of the season.
Jenelle Anthony put Susquehanna on the scoreboard just three seconds into the second half on a penalty stroke, but Meg Danielson gave the Saints a 3-1 lead, finishing off a fast break by burying a pass from Smith at the 50:48 mark and Kristi Onzik scored her first collegiate goal when she put away a rebound at 56:51.
Lindsey Taylor made three saves for the victory as the Saints improved to 4-0 on the season. Meabon had seven saves for Susquehanna, 2-3, as th Saints had an overall 18-5 edge in shots. |
