SKIDMORE UPENDS SAINTS IN SEMIFINALS, 3-1 Nov. 2: Chelsea Lisaius scored off a penalty corner with just under ten minutes to play to snap a 1-1 tie and Katie Potter scored with 27 seconds left to make it a 3-1 game as third-seeded Skidmore upended second-seeded St. Lawrence in a Liberty League field hockey semifinal game at William Smith on Friday.
Skidmore, 13-4 and ranked 17th nationally, will advance to meet William Smith in Saturday’s 1 p.m. championship game. The Saints, 13-4 and ranked 15th, will await word on a possible at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
Skidmore opened the scoring on a redirection off a penalty corner by Shaila DeLea 16:19 into the game. DeLea scored her 12 th of the season when she redirected a pass from Jess Bergen past Saint goalie Lindsey Taylor. The Saints came back to tie the game at 25:37 as Lydia Gibson tipped in a goal mouth pass by Brooke Maloney for her fifth of the season and the two teams went into halftime tied at 1-1.
Skidmore came out flying to start the second half and outshot the Saints 13-1, generating 10 penalty corners to three for the Saints in the second half. Lisaius turned one of those penalty corners into the game winning goal when she lifted a shot off the insertion by Casey Tang and while Taylor got a piece of the shot, she couldn’t keep it out of the net at 50:44.
Potter also scored after a Thoroughbred penalty corner, picking up a rebound of a shot by Lisaius, which was kicked out by Taylor, and putting it back into the net.
Taylor finished with ten saves for the Saints while Liz Catinella had three for Skidmore.
Skidmore outshot the Saints 21-5 overall and had 13 penalty corners to five for SLU.
DANIELSON, GREMBOWICZ HONORED; FOUR MAKE LIBERTY LEAGUE 1 ST TEAM
Nov. 1: First year forward Meg Danielson was named Liberty League Rookie of the Year and coach Fran Grembowicz shared Coach of the Year honors as the 2007 Liberty League Field Hockey all stars were announced Thursday morning.
Four Saints were selected to the first team all star squad as sophomore Joss-Elyse Smith joined Danielson at a first-team forward spot, senior Julia Kiernan was a first-team midfielder and sophomore Jennifer Stetson was a first-team back.
Danielson was the second leading scorer overall for the Saints and the top scorer in a talented rookie class. She finished the regular season with seven goals and three assists for 17 points and had a game-winning goal in a last-second victory over Middlebury.
Smith led the Saints in scoring with seven goals and five assists for 19 points and had two game winners while Kiernan had four goals and five assists for 13 points and also had two game winning goals in addition to being a standout defensively at the midfield. Stetson scored four goals and had an assist with one goal a game-winner as she was a key part of the Saint penalty-corner unit, and led the team in defensive saves with nine.
Senior goaltender Lindsey Taylor earned honorable mention honors after going 13-3-0 for the season with a 1.19 goals against average and a .815 save percentage.
Grembowicz and assistants Meagan Connolly and Melissa Pittelli led a young Saint team which includes nine first year players or sophomores in the regular lineup to a program record 13 regular-season wins and to second in the Liberty League. The Saints will play Skidmore in the Liberty League semifinals on Friday with an eye on earning the league’s NCAA tournament automatic qualifier.
KIERNAN NAMED TO SENIOR ALL STAR GAME
Oct. 30: St. Lawrence University senior midfielder Julia Kiernan has been selected to play in the 2007 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Senior All Star Game to be played at Ursinus College on Nov. 17.
Kiernan is a key player both offensively and defensively for the Saints, who completed their regular season with a
Kiernan, a regional All America as a junior, was the third leading scorer for the Saints with four goals and five assists for 13 points and scored two game-winning goals. She has six goals and 15 assists in 64 career games for the Saints.
St. Lawrence has gone 81-40 in field hockey since the 2000 season and was Liberty League regular season co-champions in 2006. The team is currently ranked 15 th nationally heading into the league tournament.
