SAINTS UPEND 7TH RANKED MIDDLEBURY 4-3

Oct. 16: First year forward Meg Danielson scored her second goal of the game with no time left on the clock as 20th-ranked St. Lawrence University upset 7th-ranked Middlebury College 4-3 in a non-league field hockey game at SLU’s North Country Field Tuesday evening.

Danielson's game winner came following a penalty corner as the Saints kept the ball alive in front of the Middlebury cage and Kristi Onzik directed it across the front of the goal mouth to Danielson, who was alone at Middlebury goalie Caitlin Pentifallo’s left. Danielson slid her shot just past the goaltender’s outstretched pad for her sixth of the season as the Saints improved to 10-2 on the season.

Middlebury, now 8-3, trailed 3-1 at the half, but came back to tie it with a pair of second half goals. The Saints, off to their best start since the 2001 team started 10-1, had a chance to retake the lead with 17:03 to go, but Jen Stetson’s penalty stroke try went just wide of the post.

The Panthers took the game’s first eight shots and scored the first goal in a scramble in front of Saint goalie Lindsey Taylor 6:37 into play. Reid Berrien scored the goal, her tenth of the season.

The Saints had an immediate response and pressured the Middlebury cage with Pentifallo coming up with three big stops in succession. SLU tied the game on a penalty corner at 9:50 as forward Brooke Maloney tipped Stetson’s shot at the side of the cage for her first collegiate goal.

SLU took the lead on a two-player break as Joss Elyse Smith and Danielson got behind the Middlebury defense and went in on Pentifallo. Smith made the cross-crease pass and Danielson swept it into the cage at 19:36 to give the Saints a 2-1 lead. Onzik scored her fourth of the season with a tip of Danielson’s shot at 28:57 to give the Saints their 3-1 halftime margin.

The Panthers struck back 6:45 into the second half as Berrien worked the ball into the circle and wristed a shot inside the far post from just inside the circle for her tenth of the year and Marnie Rowe tied it with her fifth goal of the season on a redirection at the side of the net with 19:10 to play in regulation.

The Saints had three penalty corners in the final two minutes of the game and finally cashed in for the game winner on a play which started just as the clock ran out. Play continues in field hockey after time expires on a penalty corner until either the defense gains control or a goal is scored.

Middlebury had an overall 29-22 edge in shots and a 12-10 advantage in penalty corners. The Saints had a 14-10 advantage in shots on goal with Pentifallo making 10 saves for the Panthers and Taylor seven for the Saints.

SLU will return to Liberty League action at Union and Skidmore Friday and Saturday.
