SMITH LEADS SAINTS TO 4-1 WIN OVER GENESEO Oct. 27: Sophomore Joss-Elyse Smith had two goals and two assists for the St. Lawrence women’s field hockey team as they went on to beat Geneseo 4-1 on North Country Field early Saturday afternoon. The Saints 13-3 overall record is the program record for regular season victories.
The sophomore, who hails from Chestertown, NY, netted her first goal 8:07 into the game. Her goal was assisted by senior Carling Delaney, who got the ball off a rebound and fed it to Smith, who was in the midst of a flurry in the circle, but was able to put it past Blue Knight goalie Emily O’Leary to give the Saints an early 1-0 lead.
Geneseo would respond with an unassisted goal by Rianna Travers, who put it past Saint goalie Lindsey Taylor with 11:30 remaining in the half, evening the score at one goal a piece.
The Saints played to win in the second half, with Smith getting a rebound and feeding it to sophomore Rachel Burke who got it in between the posts for the Saints second goal at 39:44.
Smith came back to score again three minutes later, after she put an unassisted goal into the net after getting a rebound off O’Leary’s pads, bringing the score to 3-1 still early on in the second period.
The forward would continue to dominate for the Saints as she assisted the final Saints goal of the game, scored by sophomore Lydia Gibson after going two on one with O’Leary. Smith took the ball down towards the net from 40 yards out and fed it to Gibson.
Taylor had six saves for the Saints, as did O’Leary for the Blue Knights.
“Joss-Elyse had a great game for us out there,” said Head Coach Fran Grembowicz. “Rachel had a good defensive game for is, and Julia [Kiernan] was explosive for us as center mid as she kept the ball in the circle.”
“We did a great job controlling the ball for most of the game, but Geneseo took advantage of opportunities and played well against us,” she said.
The Saints now head to the Liberty League Tournament at William Smith in Geneva, NY next weekend. As the #2 seed, St. Lawrence will face third seed Skidmore at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. The winner of the game will go on to play for the league championship title on Saturday. |
