#8 CORTLAND TOPS #16 ST. LAWRENCE IN OT

Oct. 24: Sophomore forward Jackie Plunkett scored her second goal of the day with 1:56 to go in the first overtime period to lift SUNY Cortland to a 2-1 win over St. Lawrence University in a battle between nationally ranked field hockey teams on SLU’s North Country Field Wednesday afternoon.

Plunkett got a step on a Saint defender with the teams playing seven against seven in the overtime period and walked in on Saint senior goalie Lindsey Taylor, putting a shot past Taylor and into the left side of the goal to give the Red Dragons the win. Cortland, ranked eighth nationally, improves to 15-2 while the 16 th-ranked Saints saw a six game win streak come to an end and are now 12-3 with a final regular season game against Geneseo to play on Saturday.

Cortland outshot the Saints 29-14, but both teams played solid defense in the circles and minimized scoring opportunities. Taylor made six of her 12 saves in the first half as the two teams were scoreless at the intermission with Cortland holding a 11-5 overall shot edge.

Plunkett opened the scoring with 23:51 to go in regulation time when she tucked the ball past Taylor from point blank range after a pretty setup pass by Erika Salls in the goal mouth.

Saint defender Jen Stetson kept Cortland from adding to its lead when she made a defensive save on a shot by Cortland scoring leader Kayla Chambers with under nine minutes to play and Red Dragon goalie Stacy Billings came up with a big save on Saint forward Joss-Elyse Smith with 4:08 to play.

SLU tied the game with just 24 seconds to go as Smith scored her fifth of the year, putting her own rebound behind Billings after a stop at the post.

Cortland had a chance to win it with no time left on the clock, but the Saints turned the Dragons away on a penalty corner try to send the game into overtime.

Both teams had chances in the overtime with Billings making a big save on Smith early in the extra period and Taylor coming up with two stops on Cortland shots before Plunkett ended the game.

Cortland had 12 penalty corners to three for the Saints and Billings finished with five saves to improve to 15-2 on the season. Taylor had 12 saves and is 12-3 on the year.
