SMITH SCORES TWO AS SAINTS TOP NAZARETH 3-1

Sept. 8: Sophomore Joss-Elyse Smith scored two goals to lead St. Lawrence University to a 3-1 collegiate field hockey victory over Nazareth College on North Country Field Saturday afternoon.

The Saints won their third straight and are 3-0 on the season, while Nazareth drops to 1-1 on the year.

St. Lawrence dominated the game, outshooting Nazareth 32-12 overall and 11-5 in shots on goal, but couldn’t put the game away until late in regulation time.

Junior forward Michelle Verrochi scored the only goal of the first half for the Saints as she beat Golden Flyer goalie Katie May off a set-up by senior midfielder Julia Kiernan with 26:45 gone in the half.

The Saints outshot Nazareth 13-4 in the first half, but couldn’t get the shots on the goal as just four of the 13 were on target with May making three saves.

It stayed a 1-0 game until Smith took a feed from sophomore forward Rachel Burke and scored her second of the season with 12:03 to go. She then scored unassisted just under three minutes later to give the Saints a 3-0 lead. Kelly Flanagan scored for Nazareth with 1:27 to play to make it a 3-1 final.

Lindsey Taylor made four saves for the Saints while May finished with seven for Nazareth.

SLU had six penalty corners to three for the Flyers.

The Saints will return to action at William Smith on Sept. 15, playing Susquehanna in the first of two games in Geneva.
