SKIDMORE ENDS SAINT
SEASON WITH 2-1 WIN
Nov. 8: Skidmore College, ranked 10th nationally, ended the season
for St. Lawrence University's 20th ranked field hockey team with
a come-from-behind 2-1 win in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association
semifinals at William Smith on Saturday.
The Thoroughbreds improved to 15-3-0 heading into a 1 p.m. Sunday
championship game against William Smith. The Saints conclude their
season with a 11-5 record.
Skidmore snapped a five-game Saint win streak as it came back from
a 1-0 deficit to win on Hallory Mogren's first goal of the season
13:41 into the second half. Mogren's shot from the left side of
the circle slipped past Saint goalie Sarah Rohrs and just inside
the right post for the winning goal.
The Saints took a 1-0 lead 5:17 into the game when Nicola Reid scored
her fifth goal of the year, tipping in a shot from the left side
of the cage by Jenny Heffler. It was Heffler's 38th career assist,
a St. Lawrence record.
Skidmore tied the game 22:18 into the game as Alison Enright scored
her fourth of the year from close range with a hard shot.
Rohrs finished with nine saves for the Saints while Jenna Spackman
made two saves for Skidmore. Skidmore outshot the Saints 15-6 and
had eight corners to seven for the Saints.
HEFFLER, LLOYD LEAD
SAINTS PAST GENESEO, 4-1 ON SENIOR DAY
Nov. 2: St. Lawrence University field hockey standout Jenny Heffler
made sure the final regular season game for herself and her two
senior teammates ended on a proper note, figuring in all four Saint
goals as the Saints came from behind to beat Geneseo 4-1 on North
Country Field Sunday afternoon.
Heffler, who scored in all but one of her 12 appearances after missing
three games due to injury, had a goal and three assists and continued
a eight-game scoring streak which has produced six goals and 10
assists. Junior Erin Lloyd scored her team-leading 11th and 12th
goals of the year and sophomore Tiffany Elsenbeck scored her 10th
of the season and added an assist, running her consecutive game
scoring streak to seven games.
The Saints trailed early as Cassie Martin scored her third of the
year for Geneseo with an assist to Karen Garnish in a scramble in
front of Saint goaltender Amelia Gomez. The Saints came back to
tie it when Lloyd scored from Heffler with five minutes to go in
the half and Heffler scored her second game winner in as many games
from Elsenbeck 52:51 into the game. Elsenbeck and Lloyd scored 32
seconds apart with under nine minutes to play to complete the scoring.
Amanda Carver made seven saves for 5-11 Geneseo while Gomez made
three saves for the Saints, who will take a 11-4 mark into a game
against Skidmore at William Smith in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic
Association tournament semifinals on Saturday.
The Saint trio of seniors Heffler and Gomez and graduate student
Nicola Reid have been part of Saint teams which have compiled a
51-20 record over the last four years, the best in program history.
Heffler will take career totals of 48 goals and 37 assists plus
13 career game winning goals into the UCAA tournament while Reid,
a three-time regional All America and a member of the 2003 North-South
senior all star squad along with Heffler, has career totals of nine
goals and 21 assists with two game winners. Gomez has a career record
of 28-12 with eight shutouts as the Saint goaltender.
HEFFLER, ELSENBECK
SCORE TWO EACH AS SAINTS UPEND UNBEATEN CORTLAND
October 29: Senior Jenny Heffler and sophomore Tiffany
Elsenbeck scored two goals each as St. Lawrence University's field
hockey team upset nationally fourth-ranked Cortland 4-3 on North
Country Field Wednesday, handing the Red Dragons their first loss
of the season.
The Saints, now 10-4, never trailed in the game and snapped a string
of four straight Cortland shutouts. It was the second time in the
last three years that the Saints handed a highly-ranked Cortland
team its first loss on North Country Field. Cortland was 10-0 and
ranked second nationally when it last visited Canton in 2002 and
the Saints handed the Red Dragons a 4-3 overtime loss. Wednesday's
Saint win was just the second in the series between the two teams
with Cortland holding a 19-2-3 series advantage.
Heffler and Elsenbeck each continued hot streaks to pace the Saint
offense and goalie Sarah Rohrs made nine saves and received big
help from her defensive teammates, who came through with three defensive
saves.
"It was a good, solid effort from everyone," said Saint
coach Fran Grembowicz. "Sarah played a strong game in goal
and Kate Pelligrini, Abi Copeland and Biz Keyes all came through
with defensive saves to keep us even or in front.
"We played good games against Skidmore and William Smith, both
ranked teams in our conference, and lost each of them by a goal
its
nice to have the kind of effort we received today rewarded with
a win," Grembowicz added.
Heffler and Elsenbeck each have seven game scoring sctreaks with
Heffler scoring three goals in her last two games and Elsenbeck
five in her last three outings.
Heffler opened the scoring just 1:11 into the game as she beat Cortland
goalie Jess Anderson in close. The Dragons came back to tie it on
Jessica Ueltschi's 15th goal of the season with 12:58 gone in a
see-saw first half. Elsenbeck scored her eighth of the year from
Heffler with 18:37 to go in the first half to make it a 2-1 game
as she tipped a rebound past a diving Anderson, but the Dragons
tied it again when Molly Brown scored her eighth of the season off
a penalty corner with Ueltschi assisting with 11:42 to go in the
half.
Elsenbeck put the Saints back in front when she converted from Carrie
Eggleston with 6:20 gone in the second half and Heffler netted the
eventual game winner, her seventh goal of the year and second game
winner with Elsenbeck assisting with 17:14 to play in the game.
The Dragons made the final minutes interesting as Kelli Johnson
scored her team-leading 15th of the year with 13:15 to play to cut
the Saint lead to a goal, but SLU was able to hold off the Dragons
and preserve the victory.
The Saints will play Geneseo at 1 p.m. Sunday in their final home
regular season game and then head to the UCAA tournament where they
will get a rematch with Skidmore in the quarterfinals at William
Smith on November 8.
"Today's win can give us some momentum going into the conference
playoffs, but we have to take care of business against Geneseo on
Sunday," Grembowicz added. "We're on a nice roll and we
want to keep it going as long as we can."
