Sophomore Erin Lloyd, the Saints' second leading scorer in their ECAC Mid-Atlantic championship season with 11 goals and two assists for 24 points is joined by a trio of first-year players on the all academic squad which called for a grade point average of at least 3.3 to qualify.

Lloyd from Corinth, NY, was joined by freshman Carrie Eggleston, also from Corinth, who had two goals and an assist last fall for five points, Logan Rich of Glenburn, Me, who played in eight games for the Saints and midfielder Majken Tranby of South Hero, VT, who appeared in ten games.

Saint seniors Mary Amidon, Rachel Kelley, Val Angelichio and Lauren Greene show off the second ECAC championship trophy of their careers after Sunday's win.

CHAMPS AGAIN! HEFFLER IS MVP

Nov. 17: Jenny Heffler scored both goals and earned tournament Most Valuable Player honors and St. Lawrence University's field hockey team won its second ECAC Mid-Atlantic Field Hockey Tournament in the last three years with a 2-1 win over Rensselaer at Montclair State Sunday afternoon.

The Saints, who concluded their season with a 13-6 record and are
40-16 over the last three seasons, came out of the sixth seed to win their second straight ECAC title in two appearances. SLU won the 2000 ECAC championship and was a 2001 NCAA regional finalist prior to the latest ECAC title.

Heffler opened the scoring in the title game as she put the Saints on the board just 4:566 into play off a penalty corner from Nicola Reid and Liz Allison, beating Rensselaer goalie Cathy Hotchkiss off Allison's stop on the perfectly executed corner play. She then extended the lead to 2-0 on another corner at 20:51 of the first half as she collected the ball in front and fired a backhand shot home for her 21st of the season with first year player Tiffany Elsenbeck assisting.

While eighth-seeded Rensselaer got one back when Sarah Salinger scored her third of the season in a scramble in front with 19 seconds to go in the first half, Saint goalie Amelia Gomez had four of her nine saves in the game in the second half to preserve the victory.

Gomez finished with nine saves in the game while Hotchkiss had six for the Red Hawks. The Saints were outshot 15-13 in the game, but had an 11-9 edge in penalty corners.

SAINTS IN FINALS OF TOPSY-TURVEY TOURNEY

Nov. 17: St. Lawrence University's field hockey team will look for its second Eastern College Athletic Conference field hockey championship in the last three years Sunday afternoon at Montclair State, but must beware the upset bug.

The Saints advanced to the championship game with a 2-1 win over seventh-seeded College of Misericordia late Saturday night, but fourth-seeded Montclair, the only home seed in the first round to survive, was ousted by eighth seed Rensselaer 2-1 in overtime on Saturday to set up an all-UCAA championship game.

RPI won its second straight overtime upset in the topsy-turvey tournament, having upset top seed William Smith in the quarterfinals.

First year midfielder Kate Yarmowich opened the scoring for the Saints on a penalty shot with 4:14 to play in the first half. Yarmowich scorer her fifth of the season and second penalty shot of the year, beating Misericordia goalie Liz Kovalchik to the left side of the goal. Kim Daniel cut the Saint lead to 2-1 for 18-4 Misericordia with her 18th goal of the year on a hard shot 7:38 into the second half, but Saint goalie Amelia Gomez made three saves in the stretch to preserve the Saint win. The Saints outshot Misericordia 16-5 with Kovalchik finishing with 13 saves.

SAINTS TOP DREW IN OVERTIME; ADVANCE IN ECAC TOURNEY

Nov. 13: St. Lawrence University's field hockey team has advanced to the semifinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Mid-Atlantic Regional Field Hockey Tournament for the second time in three years as a lower seed as the sixth-seeded Saints upset third seeded Drew 5-4 in overtime at Drew on Wednesday.

The Saints, who won the 2000 tournament as the fourth seeded team, will advance to the semifinals at fourth-seed Montclair State, the only of the top-seeded teams to win on Wednesday. Seventh seeded Misercordia upset second seed Hartwick 2-0 in one Wednesday quarterfinal and eighth-seeded RPI knocked off first seed William Smith 2-1 in double overtime. Montclair will play RPI in the 6:30 p.m. first game on Saturday with the Saints playing Misercordia in the 8:30 p.m. nightcap. The championship game will be played Sunday.

The Saints snapped a six-game Drew winning streak with their overtime victory after Drew forced the extra period on a penalty stroke with no time remaining on the game clock at the end of regulation time. Erin Lloyd scored the game winner, her 11th of the year and fourth game winner with 45 seconds to go in the first overtime off an assist from Jen Heffler (left) who scored two goals and had two assists in the game.

. The Saints opened the scoring when UCAA Rookie of the Year Tiffany Elsenbeck scored from Liz Allison just three minutes into the game. The Rangers answered 7:53 later on senior Casey Rogers' breakaway to make it a 1-1 game at the half. St. Lawrence gained the lead at 2-1 as Heffler scored the first of her two goals in the game early in the second half, but Kara Fetter retied the game for Drew. Drew took its first lead with 14 minutes to play on a rocket by Colleen Mahon, but the Saints struck right back as Heffler scored two minutes later and Lauren Greene put the Saints in front 4-3 from Heffler.

Fetter scored her second from Sarah Bergmann on the penalty corner with time expired to send the game into overtime before Lloyd netted the game winner.

SAINTS DRAW DREW IN ECAC TOURNEY

SAINTS LOOK TO CONTINUE SUCCESS IN FIELD HOCKEY

St. Lawrence University's field hockey team graduated only three seniors from a team which went 13-3, the best in SLU history, and earned a spot in the NCAA Atlantic Region finals. With eight starters returning and some promising newcomers on the roster, the Saints are poised to carry on the success they have enjoyed over the past two seasons, going 27-10 in that span.

But, there isn't any question that they will miss those three seniors. Stacy Turner graduated as the all-time leading goal scorer in Saint history and was a two-time first team All America. Turner, who scored 18 goals and had seven assists last year, was joined in the graduating class by All America Lindsay Wormwood, the Saints' second leading scorer a year ago with 10 goals and nine assists and by all conference choice Beth Lomanto, an outstanding defensive midfielder.

"It certainly is going to seem different without Stacy, Lindsay and Beth," said coach Fran Grembowicz. "But we do have a lot of experience and talent returning, and I think we have some young players with a lot of potential."

Leading the returnees offensively are junior Jenny Heffler, who had nine goals and four assists last year, and senior Lauren Greene, who scored eight goals and had six assists. Sophomore Erin Lloyd was UCAA Rookie of the Year and scored four goals to go with two assists and Blair Bucklin and Caitlin Parkinson came off the bench to score two goals each last year. Carolyn Gioia and Kate Pellegrini were also key contributors off the bench last season and will be candidates for a starting role as sophomores.

The Saints are proven at midfield, led by junior All America Nicole Reid, who added two goals and seven assists to outstanding defensive play, plus senior Val Angelichio, a three-year regular and backs Mary Amidon and Rachel Kelley, both seniors, also return with three years as starters under their belts.

Junior Amelia Gomez was the starting goalie for the Saints last season and had a strong post-season showing while sophomore Sarah Rohrs has had a solid early camp and is pushing for additional playing time.

Among the top first year candidates for regular roles are a trio of forwards: Liz Allison, Carrie Eggleston and Tiffany Elsenbeck. Allison, who is from North Creek and played at Johnsburg Central School, and Eggleston, who is from Corinth, were both Adirondack League all stars and Allison was also a Section II All State player and team MVP in field hockey. Kate Yarmowich, a midfielder from Warrensburg was League MVP and a member of the state tournament all star team and back Elizabeth Keyes has also been impressive in early workouts.

The Saints will prep for the season with a series of scrimmages at Stowe, VT on Saturday and Sunday and will open at home Saturday, Sept. 7 against Oneonta.
