Nov. 14: St. Lawrence University senior forward Stacy Turner earned first-team All America honors for the second straight year and sophomore Nicola Reid and senior Lindsay Wormwood were named third team All America in voting by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.

She led the Saints to a record of 27-10 in the last two seasons including the Saints' first ever NYSWCAA and ECAC titles and a trip to the NCAA regional championships this season.

The senior from White Horse Beach, MA, who was also an academic all conference selection, led the Saints with 18 goals and seven assists for 43 points this season and finished her career with 61 goals and 35 assists for 161 points, all Saint field hockey records.

CHAMBERS ENDS FIELD HOCKEY'S NCAA TOURNAMENT RUN

(Nov. 3) - Danae Chambers scored at the 7:23 mark in the first overtime to give Messiah's field hockey team a 2-1 win over St. Lawrence University in the NCAA Regional Final held at Messiah College on Saturday afternoon.

Chambers set up the play on a 2-on-1 break. She ran down the right side of the field, fed Allison Harris, who found Chambers at the right post to advance the Falcons to the Final Four held at Springfield College next weekend. "(Our players) had their hearts set on that Final Four," said Saints head coach Fran Grembowicz. "Coming so close makes this a little tough to swallow, but we're proud of what we've done this year."

And proud they should be. The Saints finish with a 13-3 record, the best in the history of the program. The team won a second round NCAA tournament game 2-1 in a double overtime marathon against Mary Washington yesterday.

That double overtime victory left the Saints a little tired early on in Saturday's game, as Messiah took a 1-0 lead early and controlled the pace of play for the beginning of the first half.

"It was tough to get our legs back," Grembowicz said. "But we started to take some things away from them later in the first half. I think we dug as deep as we could have."

The Falcons took the 1-0 lead on a penalty corner when Harris scored off a pass from Alison Reber, beating St. Lawrence goalie Amelia Gomez on the left side. It was the last time Messiah would beat Gomez for over 70 minutes, as the sophomore made 12 saves in the game. Her most impressive stretch came in the second half. Messiah took a penalty corner and threw four shots on the Saint net in a span of ten seconds, but Gomez knocked each one safely away from the net.

The Saints tied the game late in the first half on a penalty corner of their own. After the initial shot by the Saints offense, the ball bounced around the circle, as no one was able to control it. It finally squirted to Lauren Greene at the right side of the net, where she was able to tie it for the Saints.

"We kept our composure after they scored early and were able to come back and make it a great game," Grembowicz said. "This is the best record we've ever had, and we're proud of what we've accomplished."

Messiah had a number of chances to take leads in the second half, but was denied by Gomez and the rest of the Saints defense. The Falcons had 22 penalty corners, including 13 in the second half. The Saints had just seven penalty corners in the game.

Mary Amidon played another solid game defensively for the Saints, making two defensive saves. Lindsay Wormwood also made a defensive save from the turf for the Saints during a Messiah penalty corner.

The Saints will return 15 of their 18 players next year, but the three seniors will be tough loses for the Saints. Stacy Turner, this year's team leader in points, last year's NCAA scoring leader and a First Team All America Selection, Wormwood, the Saints second leading scorer this season, and Beth Lomanto, who is a big factor defensively for the Saints will all graduate this spring.

SAINT FIELD HOCKEY TEAM ADVANCES IN DOUBLE OVERTIME THRILLER

GRANTHAM, PA, (Nov. 2) - Jenny Heffler scored on a two-on-one break with 1:48 remaining in the second overtime to lead the
St. Lawrence University field hockey team to a 2-1 win over Mary Washington College in the second round of the NCAA tournament at Messiah College on Friday afternoon.

Stacy Turner, who let a clear through to Heffler, set up the goal. Turner trailed on the play, while Heffler rushed towards the circle with the ball. She dropped the ball back to Turner, who fired it into Heffler who beat Mary Washington goalie Meredith McDonald low for the game winner.

"Jenny grabbed it and gave me a back pass," said Turner, who scored the first St. Lawrence goal to tie the game with less than ten minutes remaining in regulation. "I fed it through and she put it strong through the goalie."

The game was tight throughout, though the Saints had 19 shots on goal to the Eagles 11. After the Eagles took a 1-0 lead early in the second half, St. Lawrence controlled the pace of play, especially in the overtime periods when the teams play 7-on-7.

"Both teams had some really good chances to score," said Saints coach Fran Grembowicz. "We're set up as a good 7-on-7 team. But their goalkeeper did a great job. We felt like it was just a matter of time before somebody broke through."

Turner had to leave the game about halfway through the first overtime when she fell to the turf after a collision with a Mary Washington player. Both players were attempting to control a loose ball. "I jammed my knee pretty hard on the turf," Turner said. "It might be a little sore and swollen tomorrow, but I should be alright to play."

Grembowicz came out to visit her leading scorer immediately. "That's a coaches nightmare," Grembowicz said. "When she started screaming, I had a few moments when I had to take some deep breaths." Turner, last year's NCAA scoring champion and a First Team All-America, has 18 goals and 7 assists on the season. Her 18th goal came with less than ten minutes remaining in the second half.

Nicola Reid, who played a huge game defensively for the Saints, took a free hit just outside the circle. The ball hopped twice before Turner redirected it into the net to tie the game and send it into overtime.

"I'm proud of the way we came back after going down by one," Grembowicz said. "We didn't hang our heads and just kept playing our game."

Reid and Mary Amidon kept to the defensive game plan, each turning in huge performances on their own side of the field. Both players broke up a number of scoring opportunities by intercepting passes or stealing the ball away from Eagle players. Amidon also had a defensive save for the Saints.

Mary Washington took a 1-0 lead about ten minutes into the second half when Shannon Nobile deflected a shot by Joanna Duggan past St. Lawrence goalie Amelia Gomez. Gomez made ten saves in the game, while McDonald made 17.

The Saints, now 13-2 on the season, will play Messiah in the third round on Saturday at 1 p.m. Messiah defeated Gettysburg 5-1 in the other second round game. The winner will advance to the Final Four held at Springfield College next weekend.

SAINTS EARN NCAA BID;
1st APPEARANCE SINCE 1994

Oct. 28: St. Lawrence University's field hockey team was awarded a berth in the 2001 NCAA Division III Field Hockey championship field and will begin its quest for a national title in a second round game at Messiah College in Pennsylvania at 2 p.m. on Friday.

Four teams will play first round games on Wednesday for the right to advance to the second round.

St. Lawrence, which finished the regular season with its best-ever record at 12-2, will play Mary Washington, 15-4, at Messiah on Friday at 2 while host Messiah, 14-4, will host the winner of a game between Gettysburg (10-10) and Notre Dame of Maryland (10-8) in the 2 p.m. second game. The winners of Friday's game will meet for the regional championship and the right to advance to the semifinals at 1 p.m. Saturday. The semifinals and finals will be played at Springfield College November 10-11.

St. Lawrence is making its fourth NCAA appearance and first since 1994. The Saints have an all-time record of 3-4 in NCAA tournament play and finished fourth in the 1989 tournament, losing to Cortland 3-2 in triple overtime on penalty strokes in the third place game.

The Saints are one of three teams from the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association and among four New York State teams to make the field. UCAA Champion William Smith (13-3), a 2-1 winner over the Saints, will host a regional on Saturday and Sunday while Skidmore (13-2) the only other team to beat St. Lawrence this season, will play in that regional. The Saints and Skidmore earned "Pool C" berths for the tournament, the only two available to teams from conferences with automatic qualifiers which were not conference champions. A total of 11 teams in the field were automatic and three others were independents or members of conferences which do not have automatic qualifying. Cortland State, 15-2, a team the Saints beat in overtime, is the other New York State team in the field and will play in a regional at Williams College on Saturday.

SAINTS FALL TO SEVENTH RANKED SKIDMORE IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE

Oct. 20: Skidmore scored four unanswered goals and the St. Lawrence University field hockey team never recovered, falling to Skidmore 6-2 in Saratoga on Saturday afternoon.

GREENE SCORES TWICE, SAINTS BEAT UNION

Oct. 19: Lauren Greene scored two goal off assists from Erin Lloyd to lead the St. Lawrence University field hockey team to a 2-0 win over Union in Schenectady, NY, on Friday afternoon.

Even though Greene's goal came in different halves, less than four minutes of game-time had actually passed between the two goals, which were the sixth and seventh of the season for Greene and make her the third-leading scorer for St. Lawrence this fall.

The Saints played a strong game defensively, allowing just three shots on goal, all of which Amelia Gomez stopped to record her third complete shutout of the season.

The Saints record improves to 12-1, the best start ever for a field hockey team at St. Lawrence. The team plays their final game of the regular season on Saturday at Skidmore. St. Lawrence is currently ranked ninth nationally.

Oneonta foiled the shutout when Jen Mollen scored off a penalty corner with 25:22 to go in the game, but Wormwood scored her ninth of the year with 6:24 to play for a 5-1 lead, and while Brooke Thomson cut it to 5-2 just under two minutes later, Wormwood completed her hat trick with 1:44 to play.

Amelia Gomez made one save for the Saints and surrendered one goal, while Sarah Rohrs finished up and gave up the second Oneonta goal. Oneonta's Jess Clarke finished with eight saves.

The Saints had a 23-4 edge in shots on goal and a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners.

The Herons got an early goal from Sheila McKevitt, who scored her seventh of the season in a scramble after a penalty corner with an assist from Carrie Cicciarelli with 6:37 gone in the game. William Smith's defense then frustrated the high-scoring Saint attack through much of the first half and Silverio padded the lead with her goal late in the half.

The Saints, who were outshot 8-3 in the first half, had a 21-12 edge in shots on goal in the second half and had 10 penalty corners to three for the Herons, but couldn't cash in despite numerous opportunities.

William Smith goaltender Jessica Kulesa had 20 saves for the game, 16 of them in the second half including a breakaway stop on Saint All America Stacy Turner with less than 30 seconds to play. Sophomore Amelia Gomez turned in a strong game for the Saints as well, finishing with 15 saves.

TURNER'S OVERTIME GOAL LIFTS SAINTS TO 4-3 UPSET OF 2ND-RANKED CORTLAND

Oct. 2: Senior All America Stacy Turner plucked a pass out of the air from sophomore Jen Heffler and directed the ball past Cortland State goaltender Becky Gillette 1:22 into overtime Tuesday afternoon to give St. Lawrence a 4-3 field hockey victory over the Red Dragons, who went into the game ranked second in the country.

The game was a classic battle between two unbeaten teams. Cortland went into the game 10-0 and had outscored its opposition 42-2. The Red Dragons moved from fourth to second in the National Coaches Poll released Tuesday morning and were ranked first in the country in scoring defense and fifth in offense. The Saints, ranked 12th in the latest poll and ranked sixth nationally in offense, carried a 14-game unbeaten streak into the game and improved to 8-0 this season with their third overtime win of the year.

It was the first time in Saint field hockey history that St. Lawrence has beaten Cortland. According to records at both sports information offices, Cortland was 18-0-3 against the Saints in 21 previous meetings since 1977 and while there were a number of one-goal and overtime games, the Saints had never come out on top. The two teams played a triple overtime game in the 1989 NCAA third place game with Cortland eventually winning 3-2 on penalty strokes after the two teams were deadlocked at 2-2 through the three extra periods.

The Saints grabbed an early lead on junior Lauren Greene's penalty stroke with 24 minutes to go in the first half, but had to battle from behind twice to pull out the victory. Alana LaMorte tied the game with her tenth goal of the season with 13:52 to go in the first half and Ashley Ostrander gave Cortland a 2-1 lead with 3:15 to go in the first half from Julie Gentner off a penalty corner.

The Saints tied it at 2-2 7:13 into the second half when Heffler scored her seventh of the year from Turner with a chip shot over a sprawled Gillette with Cortland a player down due to a yellow card, but Cortland regained the lead on Stacy Russell's seventh of the season off a penalty corner from Kim Anthony with 12:25 to go in regulation. St. Lawrence tied it again just 55 seconds later when Turner scored her 12th of the season on a rocket along the ground off a penalty corner which beat Gillette cleanly. Greene and Lindsay Wormwood assisted on the penalty corner.

St. Lawrence then turned around an early Cortland rush in the opening minute of overtime and Heffler sent a pass to Turner who redirected it past Gillette to give the Saints the win with 1:22 gone in the extra session.

The Saints outshot Cortland 30-18 and had seven penalty corners while the Red Dragons had 11. Cortland also had three defensive saves in the game and got a strong game from Bonnie Kenna defensively. Gillette finished with 16 saves for Cortland while Saint sophomore Amelia Gomez made 14 saves and the Saint defense came through with five defensive saves to back her up.

St. Lawrence will continue a trial by fire when it hosts William Smith, currently ranked fifth nationally, in a 4 p.m. game Friday.

Wormwood scored her fourth of the year from Lauren Greene with 17:22 to play to make it 4-2, but Hamilton came back to tie as Pratt set up both Amy Mills with 15:02 to go and Jenny Russell with 5:03 to play to make it a 4-4 game.

Jenny Heffler then produced the game-winner for the Saints as she scored unassisted with 2:59 to play for her sixth of the year.

Turner (left), who entered the game with a total of 48 goals, is deadlocked with Wendy Hall for the all-time Saint goal-scoring lead. The Saint All America has a chance to break the record as the Saints play at Rensselaer in the second half of their league-opening series Saturday at 2 p.m. Turner now has 50 career goals and 31 assists for a SLU record 131 points.

The Saints took a 1-0 lead with 14:27 to play in the first half when Jenny Heffler scored her third goal of the year from Stacy Turner and defender Mary Amidon helped keep it a 1-0 Saint lead with a big defensive save as she stepped behind Gomez (right) and batted the ball away at the far post late in the half.
