2004 Archives MALISA NAMED SECOND TEAM ALL-UCAA; FOUR EARN ALL-ACADEMIC NODS May 7: Sophomore Tim Malisa was named to the UCAA All-Conference second team on Friday. The Syracuse, NY native played in 23 games, starting 22 of those, before suffering a season-ending ankle injury in late April. Malisa posted a team-leading .359 batting average and had seven RBI. He was second on the team in slugging percentage (.474), third in hits (28) and tied for third in runs (14). His .479 on base percentage is good for second in the UCAA. Steve Cotten, Jeff DiGeronimo, Peter Rahmer and Josh White were named to the UCAA All-Academic team on Friday. To be honored, players must maintain an overall 3.2 grade point average and must have sophomore standing at St. Lawrence. Cotten, a sophomore from Granby, CT, is a government major. DiGeronimo, a sophomore from Sturbridge, MA, is majoring in math. Rahmer, a senior from Rome, NY, is an economics major with a math minor. White, a sophomore from Westmoreland, NY, is majoring in biology. SAINTS SWEEP RIT IN FINAL REGULAR-SEASON SERIES May 1: The Saints (11-20) closed out the 2004 season with a sweep on the road of non-conference opponent RIT (12-15). St.Lawrence defeated the Tigers in the first game 12-2 and then won the second 5-2 to end the season on a two-game win streak. In game one, RIT took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Saints rebounded with a three-run third inning to take the lead. Jeff DiGeronimo started the scoring for the Saints in the third, with Andrew Engebretson and Jon Blumhagen also scoring. Jesse Emilo added to the St.Lawrence lead with a run in the fourth to put St.Lawrence up 4-1. Matt Yaworsky made it 5-1 St.Lawrence when he scored in the top of the fifth. RIT closed the gap to 5-2 with a run in the bottom of the sixth. But St.Lawrence batters got hot in the top of the seventh. DiGeronimo, Engebretson, Klix, Yaworsky, Blumhagen, Corey Swiniarski, Emilo and Brandon Shankle all scored in the seventh for St.Lawrence. Nick Laettner pitched a complete game for the Saints, striking out seven RIT batters for his third win of the season. In game two, St.Lawrence took the early lead off a run by Klix in the bottom of the first. Trent Emery, Shankle and Emilo all made it home in the second to give the Saints a 4-0 lead. The Tigers answered in the bottom of the third with two runs, but it wasn't enough. Shankle added a run for the Saints in the top of the fourth to close out the scoring for St.Lawrence. Peter Rahmer pitched a complete game for the Saints, also earning his third win of the season. He struck out five Tigers in the win. NINTH-RANKED BOMBERS SWEEP SAINTS Apr. 30: The Saints (9-20) traveled to Ithaca (28-5) for a non-conference doubleheader with the No.9 Bombers Friday afternoon. Ithaca got the better of St.Lawrence in both games, winning the first 16-3 and the second 8-5 In the first game, the Saints took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning off runs by Jon Klix and Matt Yaworsky. The Bombers rebounded with a three-run second inning to take the lead at 3-2. Jon Blumhagen scored in the top of the third to tie the game for the Saints. Ithaca responded by scoring four in the bottom of the third and nine in the bottom of the sixth to pull away from the Saints. Blumhagen went one-for-two in the game with a run and an RBI. Jesse Emilo pitched five innings in the loss for St.Lawrence. Emilo struck out two batters and gave up seven earned runs. In the second game, Ithaca took the early lead in the bottom of the first off a run by Marty O'Boyle. The Saints used a three-run third inning to take the lead at 3-1 over the Bombers. Jeff DiGeronimo started the scoring for the Saints with Klix and Josh White also scoring for St.Lawrence in the third. Ithaca then rattled off six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good at 7-3. The Bombers added their eighth and final run in the bottom of the sixth. Emilo and Dan Albrecht scored for the Saints in the top of the seventh, put the Bombers were able to hold off the St.Lawrence rally, winning 8-5. Mike Gipson pitched four-and-two-thirds innings for the Saints with Chris Kerr pitching one-and-one-third innings in relief. The Saints travel to Rochester to meet the RIT Tigers for a non-conference doubleheader. The first game is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. CORTLAND GAME CANCELLED Apr. 27: Once again, the St.Lawrence baseball team has fallen victim to the weather. The Saints game versus Cortland, scheduled for Tuesday evening in Watertown, has been cancelled due to weather and field conditions in Watertown. The Saints will take the field on Friday at 1:00 for a non-conference doubleheader at Ithaca. On Saturday, the Saints will travel to RIT for a 2:00 doubleheader to end the regular season. EMILO EARNS UCAA HONORS Apr. 26: Junior pitcher Jesse Emilo was named the UCAA Co-Pitcher of the Week for his effort in the Saints 4-0 shutout over Vassar on Saturday. Emilo pitched a seven inning complete game shutout of the Brewers. The East Middlebury, Vt native struck out eight Brewers and gave up just one hit for his third win of the season. RED HAWKS SWEEP SAINTS Apr. 25: In a UCAA doubleheader at Tom Fay Field Sunday afternoon, the RPI Red Hawks (21-13, 7-3) won the first game 4-2 and won the second 7-3 over St.Lawrence (9-18, 5-7). Senior Nick Laettner, pitching for the final time for the Saints, struck out eight RPI batters in the loss in game one. In game two, freshman Chris Kerr pitched seven-and-one third innings in the loss. In game one, solid pitching and defense kept both teams scoreless through the first six innings. Rensselaer finally got on the board in the top of the sixth when Ryan Meron singled to bring home Joe Ihnatolya. The Saints tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with a run by Jon Blumhagen. Dan Albrecht doubled to center field to bring home Blumhagen. In the top of the seventh, the Red Hawks scored three runs to go up 4-1. St.Lawrence cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh off a run by Jeff DiGeronimo. But Rensselaer tightened its defense and kept the Saints from coming back, winning the game 4-2. In game two, the Red Hawks took an early 2-0 lead when Ihnatolya blasted a two-run homerun in the top of the first inning. The Saints cut the lead to one in the bottom of the second. Andrew Engebretson rocked a double to get on base for St.Lawrence. With the next at bat, Shankle flied out to centerfield, but Engebretson scored to cut the lead to 2-1. Rensselaer extended its lead to 4-1 in the top of the fourth inning. Meron and J. Olson were brought home when Brian Marine singled to center field. Albrecht doubled to start the fourth for the Saints. Emery flied out and then Engebretson singled. Shankle flied out to center but once again brought home a run, cutting the lead to 4-2. DiGeronimo made it 4-3 when he singled to left center to bring Engebretson home. RPI's Max Miller took the mound in relief of Charles Yarnold to close out the inning. The Red Hawks used a one-run seventh and a two-run eighth to push the lead to 7-3. Marine blasted a home-run for the lone score in the seventh and Flynn Cochran blasted a two-run homerun in the eighth for the final score. The Saints return to action on Tuesday in Watertown for a 6:00 p.m. match-up with Cortland State. SAINTS SPLIT WITH VASSAR Apr. 24: The Saints (9-16, 5-5) split with the Vassar Brewers (14-16, 3-7) in a UCAA doubleheader at Tom Fay Field. St.Lawrence won the first game 4-0 behind pitcher Jesse Emilo, who threw a one-hitter shutout. In game two, the Brewers came back from an 8-1 deficit to win 10-9. Corey Swiniarski scored the gamewinning run in the bottom of the second inning after being walked to get on base. The Saints extended their lead to 4-0 with a three run fifth inning. Dan Albrecht blasted a homerun to lead off the fourth. Brandon Shankle stepped to the plate and blasted a triple and then was brought home by a single to left field by Matt Yaworsky. Emilo and the Saints defense kept the Brewers scoreless for the remainder of the game. Emilo fanned eight batters to earn his third win of the season. In the nightcap, the Saints took an early lead at 1-0 in the bottom of the first off a run by Jon Klix. The Brewers tied the game in the top of the third when Nate Webb advanced home. St.Lawrence responded with a five-run third inning to take a 6-1 lead. Klix, Swiniarski, Trent Emery, Shankle and Andrew Engebretson all scored for the Saints in the third. In the bottom of the fourth, St.Lawrence added to its lead with runs from Albrecht and Emery. Vassar rebounded with a six-run sixth inning to cut the lead to 8-7. Yaworsky scored in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to 9-7. The Brewers answered with a two-run seventh to tie the game at 9-9. In the top of the eighth, Justin Hergianto blasted a gamewinning homerun to center field for the Brewers. The Saints were unable to even the score and Vassar emerged with the come-from-behind win. Mike Gipson pitched four-and-a-third innings for the Saints. Peter Rahmer took the mound in the fourth inning and pitched four-and-two-thirds innings in the loss. The Saints take the field Sunday at noon for a UCAA doubleheader against RPI. SAINTS DOMINATE CONTINENTALS, WIN 21-5
The Saints allowed a triple in the first at bat, but three consecutive outs and Pat McGarry was left stranded on third. St.Lawrence took a 2-0 lead into the top of the second inning. Tim Malisa singled to lead off the bottom of the first. Jon Klix got to first thanks to an error by the Hamilton shortstop. Malisa and Klix both advanced on stolen bases with Jesse Emilo at the plate. Emilo and Jon Blumhagen both grounded out but Malisa and Klix both scored for the Saints. The Continentals ended the shutout in the top of the second. With the bases loaded, White walked McGarry to bring home Tom Tidgwell. With the next at bat, Adam Lavallee reached first on an error and Rob Bessette scored to tie the game at 2-2. White struck out Anthony Bardaro to escape the inning. Hamilton took the lead when Bessette singled to right field to bring home Tom Bradley. Justin Parker and Bessette scored when Patrick Suarez blasted a hit to left center field. Leftfielder Corey Swiniarski and centerfielder Jeff DiGeronimo were both running under the ball when DiGeronimo caught Swiniarski in the face with his glove causing the ball to drop to the grass and allowing Parker and Bessette to score. Swiniarski rebounded by blasting a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth bringing home Trent Emery and cutting the lead to 5-4. Next up, Brandon Shankle was walked and then DiGeronimo stepped to the plate and belted a double to left field, driving home Shankle to tie the score at 5-5. With Shankle in scoring position, Matt Yaworsky stepped up and rocketed a triple to left field, bringing home Shankle and taking the lead back for good for the Saints. St.Lawrence continued to connect with the ball going up 7-5 in the fifth. In the sixth inning, the Saints pushed the lead to 9-5. St.Lawrence batters exploded at the plate in the seventh with a seven-run inning. The Saints added a final run in the bottom of the eighth. Steve Hackenburg took the mound in the eighth inning to relieve White and pitched one inning. Hackenburg struck out two batters and did not surrender a run. Andy Rauh closed out the game in the ninth for the Saints with one strikeout and giving up just one hit. The Saints improve to 8-15 overall while Hamilton falls to 7-17 on the season. St.Lawrence has won four of its last five games after a rough start to the season. SAINTS SHUTOUT CARDINALS 7-0 Apr. 20: The Saints improved to 7-15 overall with a 7-0 blanking of the Plattsburgh State Cardinals Tuesday afternoon at Tom Fay Field. St.Lawrence returns to action on Wednesday afternoon with a 4:00 game with Hamilton in Canton. The Saints got on the board early thanks to a triple to center field by Jesse Emilo in the bottom of the first inning. Emilo's triple drove home Tim Malisa, who was walked to get on base. Next at bat was Trent Emery who doubled to left center field, driving home Emilo to put the Saints up 2-0. Matt Yaworsky gave the Saints a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when he was driven home by Jon Klix's single. Malisa put the Saints up 4-0 when Emilo singled. Brandon Shankle stepped to the plate and doubled to center field bringing home Emery and Emilo to give the Saints a 6-0 lead with two outs. The Saint bats went cold in the third and fourth, but they heated up in the bottom of the fifth. Andrew Engebretson started off the inning with a double to left field. Joe Regonlinski singled with the next at bat and then Yaworsky singled to bring Engebretson home and give the Saints a 7-0 lead. Backed up by solid defense, Peter Rahmer fanned seven Cardinal batters and surrendered just six hits in his second win of the season. KERR NAME UCAA CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Apr. 19: Freshman Chris Kerr was named the UCAA Co-Rookie of the Week for his performance in the Saints 8-1 win over Union on Sunday afternoon. Kerr pitched a four-hit complete game for his first win of the season, in game 2 of a UCAA doubleheader at Central Park. Kerr gave up one unearned run and struck out six Dutchmen batters in the win. The Saints return to action on Wednesday when Hamilton travels to Canton for a 4:00 p.m. matchup at Tom Fay Field. SAINTS SPLIT WITH DUTCHMEN SCHENECTADY, N.Y.-Kyle Murphy scored on an error with one out in the last of the seventh to give Union a 6-5 win over St. Lawrence in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association baseball game at Central Park. The Saints won the nitecap, 8-1, behind the complete-game four-hitter by freshman pitcher Chris Kerr. The split leaves the Saints with a 4-4 mark in the UCAA and 6-15 overall. The Dutchmen are now 4-4 in the UCAA and 9-11 overall. Trailing 5-2 entering the last of the ninth, Union used four hits and St. Lawrence had taken a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run single byBrandon Shankle. The second game saw Kerr give up one unearned run while fanning six Dutchmen. The Saints scored four times in the top of the fourth on hits by Trent Emery, which drove in a run, Andy Engebretson and Will Kunkel and two Union errors. St. Lawrence iced the win in the eighth on an RBI hit by Tim Malisa and a two-run pinch hit single by Bowen Borgeson. SAINTS SWEEP SKIDMORE ON THE ROAD Apr. 17: The St.Lawrence baseball team evened its UCAA record at 3-3 with a sweep of Skidmore on the road Saturday afternoon. Trailing 4-3 in the top of the seventh inning, the Saints scored three runs with two outs to earn a 6-4 win in game one of a UCAA doubleheader at Castle Diamond Field. In game two, tied at 7-7 in the top of the ninth inning, St.Lawrence brought home three runners to earn the sweep with a 10-7 win. The Saints improve to 5-14 overall and 3-3 in the UCAA. Skidmore falls to 10-16 overall and 1-5 in the UCAA. Jesse Emilo pitched an entire game for the Saints in winning his second game this season in game one. Emilo struck out six Skidmore batters while giving up just four hits. Corey Swiniarski had a double in the seventh that brought home two Saints runners. Jon Klix was two-for-four with two RBI. St.Lawrence was leading 3-1 after five and a half innings. But a three-run inning in the sixth gave Skidmore a 4-3 lead. The game stayed at 4-3 until the Saints three-run seventh inning. In game two, Steve Rahmer earned his first win of the season, pitching in relief of Mike Gipson. Gipson pitched six innings, striking out eight Skidmore batters and giving up four hits. Rahmer pitched two innings and surrendered four hits. Steve Hackenburg checked in the ninth to close out the win for the Saints. Tim Malisa gave the Saints a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth with a two-run home run. Skidmore rebounded with two-run innings in the sixth and seventh to go up 6-4. Matt Yaworsky blasted a three-run homer in the eighth to give the Saints a 7-6 lead. Skidmore scored in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 7-7. Emilo had a double in the ninth that brought home two Saints runners. Emilo was then brought home by Trent Emery's double. The Saints will meet Union in Schenectady, NY for a UCAA doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday. UTICA GAME POSTPONED Apr. 15: The Saints baseball make-game with Utica, scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Thursday night in Watertown has been postponed due to the conditions of the field in Watertown. PLATTSBURGH GAME POSTPONED Apr. 13: The Saints baseball game scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon with Plattsburgh has been postponed due to the weather and conditions of Tom Fay Field. SAINTS FALL TO OSWEGO 8-2 Apr. 12: The St.Lawrence baseball team (3-14, 1-3 UCAA) fell to Oswego 8-2 on Monday night in a game played under the lights in Watertown, NY. The Lakers jumped on the Saints early, going up 3-0 by the third inning. St.Lawrence got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when Tim Malisa was brought in by Jon Blumhagen. Malisa got on base with a single and then advanced with a single by Jon Klix. Malisa was brought home by Blumhagen's sacrifice fly. The Lakers answered with a run in the sixth to regain their three-run lead. Andrew Engebretson scored the second run of the night for the Saints in the ninth inning as St.Lawrence tried to rally. But Oswego brought four runners home in the ninth to close out the game and go home with the win. Peter Rahmer pitched eight innings for the Saints, striking out sixth Laker batters and allowing seven hits. Andy Rauh pitched one inning in relief of Rahmer. Lakers' pitchers Harendza and Bushey combined to strike out nine Saints' batters and allowed just five hits. The Saints return home to host Plattsburgh on Wednesday afternoon at Tom Fay Field. The game is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. SAINTS SPLIT WITH ROCHESTER Apr. 11: The Saints (3-13, 1-3 UCAA) ended a three-game losing skid with a 4-1 win over Rochester (11-5, 2-2 UCAA) in game one of a UCAA doubleheader at Tom Fay Field on Sunday afternoon. Senior Nick Laettner struck out five Yellowjacket batters and allowed just four hits in his second win of the season. The Yellowjackets bounced back to take game two 4-3. Rochester took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning off a run from Mark Jackson. The Saints answered with a run from Jeff DiGeronimo in the bottom of the second to tie the game. St.Lawrence took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Corey Swiniarski was brought home when Matt Yaworksy singled to center field. The Saints extended their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Jon Blumhagen singled to bring in Jon Klix. Swiniarski scored his second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth off a single to left field by Jesse Emilo. Swiniarski led the Saints offensively, going three-for-three at bat with two runs. Emilo was three-for-four with an rbi, Blumhagen went two-for-three with an rbi and Yaworsky was two-for-three with an rbi In game two, the Yellowjackets took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. In the top of the fourth, Kerr kept the score close. With the bases loaded and two outs, Rochester's Nate Black was at bat. Kerr struck him out to end the inning and keep the Yellowjackets breaking the game open. In the bottom of the sixth, Dan Albrecht doubled to center field to bring in Jeff DiGeronimo, cutting the Yellowjackets lead to 2-1. Swiniarski grounded out to shortstop with the next at bat, advancing Albrecht to third base. Trent Emery flied out to center field with the next at bat, but brought home Albrecht to tie the game at 2-2. Josh White flied out to center field to end the sixth inning with the score tied. Rochester retook the lead in the top of the seventh when Mike Lesczinski tripled to left center field. He was brought home with the next at bat when Mark Jackson hit a sacrifice fly to center field. The Saints answered the Yellowjackets run when Yaworsky was brought in by Jon Klix in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 3-3. Rochester took the lead for good at 4-3 in the top of the eighth inning when Black tripled to center to bring home Adam Braveman. The Saints were unable to rally and the Yellowjackets held on for the win. The Saints return to action on Monday afternoon as they play Oswego in Watertown at 6:00 p.m. SAINTS DROP UCAA OPENERS TO CLARKSON Apr. 9: The Saints (2-12, 0-2) dropped their UCAA conference openers to rival Clarkson Friday afternoon at Tom Fay Field. The games were originally scheduled to be played at Clarkson but were moved to St.Lawrence due to the conditions of Clarkson's field. St.Lawrence dropped the first game 4-1. The Saints rallied in the 8th inning of game 2, but were unable to pull out the win, falling 4-3 to the Golden Knights. Dan Albrecht led the Saints with a double and scored the lone run for St.Lawrence. Tim Malisa and Brandon Shankle also had hits for the Saints, with Shankle bringing Malisa home. Jesse Emilo pitched a full game in the loss for the Saints, striking out five Clarkson batters. Three of Clarkson's runs came off wild pitches. Rob Cowin scored the winning run for the Golden Knights in the third inning. Cowin got on base with a single and then stole second. He advanced to third on an error by Emilo and then scored on a wild pitch. In game 2, Clarkson took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth off runs from Mike Ruffinen and Tom Lilienthal. The Saints closed the score to 3-1 with a run from Josh Ethier. Ethier was walked and was brought in by a double by Jon Blumhagen. Clarkson regained their two-run lead in the bottom of the seventh off a run from Rob Cowin. The Saints rallied in the top of the eighth with runs from Jon Klix and Jeff Silino. With two runners on and two outs, the Golden Knights put Casey Ewald on the mound to close out the inning and preserve the lead. Albrecht was thrown out at second to end the inning. John Smith took the mound in the ninth for the Golden Knights to close out the win. The Saints will host the Rochester Yellowjackets in a UCAA doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday at Tom Fay Field. CLARKSON-ST.LAWRENCE GAME MOVED TO TOM FAY FIELD April 9: Wet conditions on the Clarkson baseball field, forced the game between Clarkson and St.Lawrence, originally scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Friday, to be moved to Tom Fay Field at St.Lawrence. The game will be played at 1:30 p.m. Friday afternoon. BASEBALL HOME OPENERS POSTPONED April 2: Wet field conditions and forecasts of more rain plus Sunday snow have resulted in the postponement of St. Lawrence University baseball doubleheaders against Hartwick and Utica scheduled for the Tom Fay Field this weekend. EMILO'S 3-HITTER GAINS SAINTS SPLIT AT ST. JOHN FISHER SAINTS RETURN FROM TOUGH TRIP IN FLORIDA Mar. 24: The St.Lawrence baseball team had a rough trip to Ft. Myers, Florida for their spring break trip. Once they arrived in Florida, the baseball team was involved in an accident that left quite a few of the players banged up as they prepared to play 10 games in eight days. The Saints dropped a close 5-4 game to Hope on Monday, March 15. Tim Malisa, Josh White, Dan Albrecht and Jon Klix all scored for the Saints. St.Lawrence took a 4-1 lead into the 7th but was unable to hold of a Hope rally, as three runs scored in the 7th inning to tie the game and the game winner was scored in the 8th. Jess Emilo pitched six solid innings for the Saints. On Wednesday, March 14 the Saints lost to Amherst College 10-4. St.Lawrence got offensive production from Albrecht who scored two runs and Emilo and Jeff Silino, who each scored once. Andrew Engebretson and Trent Emery each had a double and an RBI for the Saints. Josh White, Peter Rahmer and Steve Hackenburg all shared pitching duties in the loss. St.Lawrence fell to UMass-Boston on Thursday, March 19 16-5. Jon Blumhagen led the Saints with two runs and an RBI. Matt Yaworsky scored and had an RBI. Andrew Engebretson and Tim Shankle also scored for the Saints in the loss. Chris Kerr pitched five innings for the Saints, with Hackenburg and Will Kunkel pitching in relief. On Friday, March 19 the Saints had a double header with Augsburg. Augsburg took the first game 15-3. Albrecht and Emery each had a double and an RBI to lead the Saints offensively. Jeff DiGeronimo and Silino also scored for St.Lawrence. Nick Laettner pitched five innings for the Saints with Albrecht pitching two innings in relief. In the second game, St.Lawrence dropped a tough 7-6 loss. The Saints took a 6-1 lead into the 6th inning, but Augsburg battled back to score three in the 6th and three in the 7th to take the win. Shankle led the Saints offensively scoring twice, hitting two doubles and knocking in a run. White scored twice, had a double and an RBI. Malisa and Corey Swiniarski also scored for the Saints. Klix had a double and knocked in a run. Mike Gipson pitched a solid five innings for the Saints with Rahmer pitching in relief. St.Lawrence closed out the trip with a tough 6-4 loss to Brockport on Saturday. Yaworsky, Klix and DiGeronimo each scored. Swiniarski scored and drove in a run for St.Lawrence. The Saints rallied late, scoring three runs in the 9th, but were unable to overcome Brockport. Emilo pitched seven innings with Hackenburg pitching in relief. The Saints return to the diamond on Saturday, March 27 with a double header at Cazenovia. Game 1 is set to start at 1:00 p.m. On Sunday, the Saints have a double header at St.John Fisher. Game 1 is set to begin at 12 noon.
SAINTS 1-3 AFTER FIRST FOUR IN FLORIDA Mar. 17: The St.Lawrence baseball team has had a rough go of it at the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Florida. The Saints are 1-3 after their first four games during their trip south. On Saturday, sophomore Josh White pitching in his first start as a Saint, was backed up by a solid defensive effort for four innings. However, Messiah pulled away in the fifth to win 9-4. Seniors Brandon Shankle and Trent Emery and sophomores Tim Malisa and Jeff DiGeronimo each hit doubles for the Saints. In the second game of the double header, freshman Chris Kerr pitched an excellent six innings in his debut with the Saints. Shankle continued his solid hitting with two hits, but the Saints came up short in the rematch, falling 5-1 to Messiah. Malisa scored the lone run off a single by Shankle in the loss for the Saints. On Sunday, senior pitcher Nick Laettner and the Saints earned the first win of the 2004 season. Laettner threw a complete game, dominating Dickinson hitters. In seven innings, he allowed only eight hits, no runs and eight strikeouts, and earned a no-hitter in the fourth. The Saints exploded at the plate in the fourth, scoring nine runs on seven hits. Malissa led the Saints with three hits, Shankle, Emery and junior Jeff Silino each had two hits apiece to lead St.Lawrence to a 12-2 win. In the second game, the Saints' bats went cold as Dickinson rebounded to down the Saints 12-0. Freshman Mike Gipson pitched four innings in his Saints' debut, striking out three batters. Shankle and Malissa continued their hot hitting, but the Saints were held to to just six hits by Dickinson pitching. The Saints return to action Wednesday night against Amherst at 7:00 p.m. and UMass-Boston at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
