SAINTS SEASON ENDS WITH SPLIT

 

May 5, 2001- The St. Lawrence University baseball team's season came to an end on Saturday with a doubleheader split against Hamilton College. Hamilton won game one on Saturday 4-2 while the Saints held on for game two, 3-1, behind the pitching of Dan Barry, who allowed just four hits while striking out six for the complete game victory. Brandon Shankle was swinging the hot bat for St. Lawrence, finishing the day 4-6 with two runs batted in.

 

Hamilton (8-19) struck early in game one, as the Saints committed three errors in the first two innings, all leading to three unearned runs for the Continentals. Hamilton tacked on another run in the fourth on a single by Mike Feuerstein, who was 2-3 with a RBI and a stolen base in the game, to extend the lead to 4-0.

 

Continental's starter Jamie Harrison allowed the Saints just three hits in the game while striking out nine. Singles by Tim McMahon and Shankle in the fourth and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jon Dupont were the only runs the Saints could put up.

Nick Laettner came on for Saints starter Mike Ferguson in the top of the sixth and allowed just one hit over the last two innings. Ferguson allowed only one earned run and four hits while taking the loss to fall to 0-6 on the season.

 

In game two, it was St. Lawrence who struck first, scoring one in the second and two in the third to take a 3-0 lead. RBI's by Kevin Eberz, Dupont and Shankle proved to be all that St. Lawrence righty Dan Barry would need. Barry gave up just four hits and one earned run, that coming in the top of the seventh, as he took the complete game win to improve to 2-5. McMahon and Shankle each went 2-3 with a RBI while Eberz collected two hits in four at bats and had a stolen base and RBI.

 

St. Lawrence finishes the season with a record of 10-26 and 4-8 in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association. Shankle led the Saints in hitting this season, finishing with a .316 average and was second on the team with 18 runs batted in. Eberz hit .315 from his leadoff spot and led the team in on-base percentage at .422. Trent Emery was the leading RBI man with 24 while Dan Bailey topped the pitchers with a 3.73 earned run average. Randy Geise posted a 4-4 record and a 4.79 ERA while leading the team in innings pitched (56.1) and strikeouts (47).

 

 

 

NINTH-RANKED ITHACA SWEEPS SAINTS

 

May 4, 2001--The St. Lawrence University baseball team dropped a pair of games, 5-0 and 6-3, to Ithaca College, the ninth-ranked team according to the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball Division III Baseball Poll. Todd Hillegas went 3-6 for the Bombers with two runs scored and Ron Amato was 3-7 with three runs batted in over both games. Tim McMahon led the Saints offense with a 3-6 day.

Ian Locke struck out five and allowed just four hits pitching Ithaca (26-7) to the game one shutout and improving his record to 6-0 on the season. The Bombers scored twice and the third and tacked on the fifth in the fourth inning. Amato drove in two runs while going 2-4 with a double in the game. Randy Geise scattered eight hits and allowed four earned runs on the mound for the Saints to even his record at 4-4.

Dan Bailey carried a no-hitter into the fourth for the Saints before an Amato single plated Garrett Baron, who reached base on an error. A five-run sixth inning chased Bailey from the mound after allowing four earned runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. St. Lawrence scored three in the bottom of the sixth on a two-RBI double by Trent Emery. Sazi Guthrie threw 5+ innings to notch his second win of the season and Jim Daunais threw the last inning to pick up his seventh save.

St. Lawrence falls to 9-25 with the losses and will wrap up their regular tomorrow afternoon in a noon doubleheader against Hamilton.

 

 

 

BASEBALL DROPS THREE OF FOUR

 

The St. Lawrence University baseball team dropped three of four games over the weekend, beating Hartwick 9-4 in game one on Saturday before losing three in a row to close the weekend. St. Lawrence is now 9-22 as they head into the last week of the regular season with five games scheduled.

Randy Geise picked up his team-leading fourth win of the season in game one against Hartwick on Saturday, allowing just two earned runs and seven hits over seven innings as the Saints won 9-4. Jesse Roshia went 3-5 out of the leadoff spot and Scott Miller was 3-4 with a run batted in. Dan Albrecht pitched in two hits in four at-bats with three RBI. Stephen Drake hit his first homerun of the season, a three run shot in the Saints six-run first inning.

Six Saint errors in game two led to eight unearned runs for the Hawks and a 9-6 loss for St. Lawrence. Dan Bailey picked up the loss on the mound, allowing nine runs, just one earned, and 10 hits in six innings of work. Drake drove in two runs for the Saints.

The Saints then dropped a pair of games at Utica, falling 9-3 in game one and 9-5 in game two, on Sunday afternoon. Five runs in the first inning and three more in the second proved to be the difference as Utica rolled to the 9-3 win in game one. Miller was 2-4 and Brandon Shankle went 2-3 at the plate. Dan Barry fell to 1-5 on the mound, allowing seven earned runs while striking out seven in six innings of work.

Unlike game one, the Saints built a 5-0 lead through two and a half innings of play in game two before Utica rallied to take the 9-5 win. A Vaughn Oliver single in the second plated two, giving the Saints a 3-0 lead. Trent Emery then doubled in a run in the third and a single by Brandon Shankle drove in Emery, putting the Saint up 5-0. Utica cut into the lead with a run in the third, two in the fourth and another in the fifth to put the game at 5-4 heading into the sixth. Utica broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs off of relief pitcher Peter Rahmer, who picked up the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season. Emery and Shankle each had two hits while Vaughn Oliver had two RBI.

The Saints will take on Cortland at Watertown on Tuesday, May 1, before finishing up the regular season with a pair of home doubleheaders on Friday, May 4, and Saturday, May 5. Ithaca travels to Canton of Friday for a 2:00 doubleheader and Hamilton will visit for a 1:00 date on Saturday.

 

 

 

SAINTS DOWN CLARKSON IN RUBBER MATCH, 7-4

 

April 25, 2001-- After splitting a pair of UCAA games last week, the St. Lawrence baseball team laid claim to North Country bragging rights as they won the third meeting of the season with Clarkson, 7-4, riding the capable right shoulder of freshman Nick Laettner and the bat of Dan Albrecht. Laettner picked up his second win of the season allowing just three earned runs and scattering seven hits while striking out 10 in the complete game effort. Albrecht went three-for-four at the plate and drove in three runs. Matt Draper went 3-4 for Clarkson.

Clarkson struck first in the second inning as Draper double led to a run and Dustin Breen forced home another with a ground out. St. Lawrence answered with one in the bottom of the inning on an Albrecht single and then tied the game in the third as Tim McMahon drove in a run.

The Golden Knights assumed the lead again in the top of the fifth. A single by Nate Markell and a pair of Saint errors led to two runs and a 4-2 Clarkson lead. Josh Karon came in to relieve Rob Stoddard who allowed four runs and eight hits in the first six innings of the game for Clarkson. Karon got the lead off hitter, but an error and two singles loaded the bases for the Saints. Rich Messano came in to relieve Karon, but a single by Jon Dupont, who was 2-4 in the game, scored Kevin Eberz. Trent Emery's sac fly to left field gave the Saints a 6-4 lead before Messano could end the inning.

St. Lawrence tacked on another run in the seventh on a single by Miller to cap the scoring in the Saints 7-4 win. Karon took the loss for Clarkson, as he was responsible for two runs.

The Saints next game is scheduled for Saturday, April 28 when the travel to take on Hartwick in a doubleheader.

 

 

 

SAINTS TAKE FIRST, DROP SECOND AGAINST RIT

 

April 22, 2001-- The St. Lawrence University baseball team split a pair of games with Rochester Institute of Technology on Sunday afternoon, taking game one 6-5 before falling in the second game, 5-0. Kevin Eberz was 4-7 in the doubleheader and his sixth inning RBI double in game one pushed home the winning run.

Randy Geise threw five innings in game one to improve to 3-3 on the season, allowing three earned runs and striking out five. Peter Rahmer came in to finish the game to earn his first save of the season. Eberz went two for four with two runs batted in, a double and a stolen base. Jon Dupont was two for three with a RBI and a run scored. Eric Hauser was 3-4 for RIT (14-11-1) and Rob Forbes, Dan Feldman and Jonathon Muslalowski each had two hits in four at bats for the Tigers. Michael Mann suffered the loss, allowing 10 hits and six earned runs in six innings of work.

Dan Weglinski quieted the Saints bats in game two, giving up just four hits and striking out three while walking none for the win. Muslalowski and Forbes continued to swing well, each pounding out a pair of hits in three at bats. Muslalowski also scored two runs. Eberz and Dan Albrecht accounted for all four of the Saints hits, each going 2-3. Dan Bailey threw a complete game for St. Lawrence, allowing seven hits and four earned runs, falling to 2-4.

The Saints are now 7-19. Their next game is scheduled for Wednesday, April 25 as they play host to Clarkson in a 3:30 game.

 

 

 

SAINTS SPLIT AT CLARKSON IN UCAA DOUBLEHEADER

 

April 17, 2001-- The St. Lawrence University baseball team split an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader at Clarkson on Tuesday afternoon, falling 5-2 in the first game before taking the nightcap, 8-4. Dan Bailey picked up the win in game two to pick up his second win of the season as the Saints are now 6-16 overall and 4-6 in the UCAA.

St. Lawrence took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of game one, but the Golden Knights (9-7, 4-4 UCAA) piled on four runs in the bottom of the third and another in the fifth to secure the win. Barcomb went 5-6 in the doubleheader, hitting two home runs and driving in six. Randy Geise (2-3) took the loss for the Saints, going the distance while allowing five hits and striking out four.

The St. Lawrence offense exploded for 16 hits and eight runs in game two, making a winner out of Bailey. Seven Saints had multiple hit games while Jon Dupont cracked his second home run of the season, a solo shot to left field. St. Lawrence came from behind for the win, scoring all eight runs in the last four innings of the game. Scott Miller was 3-4 with two RBI while Tim McMahon and Kevin Eberz each went 2-4. Dan Albrecht and Jesse Roshia were each 2-3.

The Saints next game is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, as they entertain Rochester in a 2:00 doubleheader.

 

 

 

CAZENOVIA TIPS SAINTS, 11-7

 

April 16-- Cazenovia College took an 11-7 decision from the Saints nine in a neutral site game in Watertown on Monday. With the loss, St. Lawrence falls to 5-15 on the season as they head into an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader at Clarkson on Tuesday afternoon.

Cazenovia struck first in the game, scoring on a Caz' fielding error in the bottom of the second. Cazenovia answered with five runs in the top of the third, taking a lead they would not relinquish.

St. Lawrence pulled the game to 7-6 in the bottom of the fifth when Jon Dupont doubled in two runs and Brandon Shankle singled in Dupont. However, Cazenovia would score three in the top of the sixth, chasing Saint starter Nick Laettner from the mound after six full innings of work.

Each team would tack on one more run. Laettner picked up the loss for St. Lawrence, allowing 13 hits and 10 runs, six earned, in six innings of work to fall to 1-2 on the season.

 

 

 

RED HAWKS ROUT SAINTS TWICE IN BASEBALL

 

April 14: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute improved to 4-0 in the UCAA and 11-9 overall with a pair of convincing victories over St. Lawrence on Saturday, winning 16-0 and 19-5.

The Red Hawks pounded out 34 hits in the two games and took advantage of 13 Saint errors en route the sweep. SLU falls to 5-14 overall and 3-5 in the UCAA.

RPI scored at least one run in every inning in the first game and Pat Hughes and Bob Cutting combined for a four-hit shutout in the 16-0 win. Dan Barry took the loss for the Saints.

The Saints grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two, but RPI scored six in their half of the inning as Brian Marine hit a grand slam home run. The Saints cut it to 6-4 in the top of the third as Jon Dupont hit a two run homer, but RPI put it away in the fourth with a five run burst and added six in the sixth. Mike Ferguson took the loss for the Saints.

SAINTS SPLIT AT VASSAR

 

April 13-- The St. Lawrence University baseball team split a UCAA conference doubleheader at Vassar on Friday afternoon. Scott Koplik threw all seven innings in game one to give the Brewers the 5-3 win while Kevin Eberz' 3-5, three runs batted in performance led the Saints to the game two, 9-3 win.

St. Lawrence got to Koplik early in the game, scoring two runs in the second as Brandon Shankle drove in a run, and then Koplik balked in the Saints second run. The lead was extended to 3-0 in the top of the third as Vassar committed three errors and Koplik threw a wild pitch that led to a run by Stephen Drake.

Geise, the reigning UCAA Pitcher of the Week, cruised through the first four innings, allowing just one run and four hits. The Brewers solved Geise in the fifth, touching him up for four runs and chasing him from the mound after getting just one out in the fifth. Freshman Nick Laettner came in and put out the fire, but not before the Saints trailed 5-3.

Koplik allowed just one hit in the last three innings to earn his fourth win of the season. Geise dropped to 2-2 with the loss.

In game two, Dan Bailey came through with six innings of quality mound work, allowing just five hits and two runs as the Saints took the nightcap, 9-3. Kevin Eberz led the offensive explosion, going 3-5 with 3 RBI and a double. Jesse Roshia and Devin Dobrowolsky each drove in two runs. St. Lawrence broke out for three runs in the third and four in the fourth to take control of the game.Bailey picked up his first win of the season with his performance and is now 1-3.

With the split, the Saints are now 5-12 overall and 3-3 in the UCAA while Vassar moves to 11-8 and 1-1 in the UCAA. They will take on Rensselaer on Saturday in another conference double-dip at 12:00.

GEISE NAMED UCAA PITCHER OF THE WEEK

 

April 10, 2001--St. Lawrence University senior pitcher Randy Geise was named the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 10, 2001. Geise threw a complete game one-hitter, striking out eight and walking just one en route to his second win of the 2001 season. The righthanded hurler faced just 23 batters in seven innings.

Geise leads the UCAA in strikeouts with 29 in 27 innings, averaging 9.67 strikeouts per nine innings. He is 13th in the league with a 4.00 earned run average while sporting a 2-1 record.

The Saints are 4-11 this season and 2-2 in the UCAA. Their next game is scheduled for Monday, April 16, when they will meet Cazenovia in Watertown for a 6:00 p.m. game.

 

 

 

SAINTS THROW BACK-TO-BACK SHUTOUTS TO CLOSE WEEKEND

 

April 8, 2001--Randy Geise threw seven shutout in innings in game one and Dan Bailey and Nick Laettner combined to throw the games two goose egg against Skidmore to snap a nine-game losing streak and bounce back from two losses against Union on Saturday. Geise allowed just one hit and struck out eight in seven innings to improve to 2-1 on the season with the 8-0. Bailey allowed just two hits in 4 1/3 innings and Laettner picked up the win in 2 2/3 innings of work as the Saints are now 4-11 on the season, 2-2 in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association.

On Saturday, St. Lawrence dropped two games to Union, 7-3 and 11-9. The games were played at Oswego due to poor field conditions at Union.

The Saints and Thoroughbreds met up at RPI on Sunday. Geise allowed just the one hit, a single by Ted Whittemore in the sixth inning in the 8-0 game one win, while walking no one and striking out eight. Tim McMahon led the Saints offense, which exploded for seven runs in the fifth to break open the 1-0 game, going 3-4 with a double and two runs batted in. Brandon Shankle was swinging a hot bat, driving in two on his only hit of the game, a triple.

In game two, Bailey took over where Geise left off, allowing just two hits in 4 1/2 innings of work. Laettner relieved Bailey with 2 2/3 of stellar relief, not allowing a hit and picking up his first career win. Kevin Eberz, batting leadoff and playing second base, and Jon Dupont and each went 3-3 in the game. McMahon continued to rake the ball, going 2-4 in the game and 5-8 in the two-game series.

Skidmore was 9-9 and 1-1 in the UCAA heading into the games, but fall to 9-11 and 1-3 with the losses.

SAINTS FALL TO OSWEGO, 4-2

 

April 4, 2001--Oswego freshman Mike Baca tossed a complete game six-hitter to lead Oswego to a come-from-behind 4-2 win over St. Lawrence on Wednesday afternoon. Baca tallied five strikeouts in the complete game performance as Oswego improves to 2-4 and the Saints fall to 2-9 on the season.

St. Lawrence took a 1-0 lead in the first when an error by the Oswego shortstop on Jon Dupont's grounder allowed Kevin Eberz to score from third. Randy Geise kept the opposition off the board before the Saints extended the lead to 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning. With runners on first and third, Brandon Shankle hit a sacrifice fly to deep center and Tim McMahon scored from third.

Carrying the shutout into the bottom of the sixth, two St. Lawrence fielding errors led to two Oswego runs and chased Geise from the mound with 5 1/3 innings and five strikeouts. Dan Bailey came on in relief and ended the Oswego rally with the game tied at 2-2.

Oswego took the lead in the bottom of the seventh with two more runs, both unearned. St. Lawrence outhit the Lakers 6-5 in the game but took the 4-2 loss.

The Saints next game is scheduled for Saturday, April 7, as they travel to Schenectady, N.Y., to take on the Union Dutchmen. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.

SAINTS RETURN FROM FLORIDA READY
FOR NORTHERN SCHEDULE

 

The St. Lawrence University baseball team played 10 games in Ft. Myers, Fla., over spring break, winning two and dropping eight. However, with three of losses coming by just one run, the Saints could easily be 5-5.

The Saints started the trip on the winning end of a one-run affair with Suffolk, 7-6. St. Lawrence dropped two games the following day to Muskingum, including a 4-3 loss in which the Saints outhit the Muskies 9-6. A 17-1 drubbing of New Jersey City followed the next day before St. Lawrence dropped their next six games. Two of those games were 7-6 decisions that got away from SLU.

Tim McMahon, batting in the clean-up spot, led the Saints offensive attack, posting a .367 batting average during the trip and leads the team with eight runs batted in. Starting catcher Scott Miller hit a robust .344 in the two-spot while Brandon Shankle hit .310 with seven RBI's, second on the team. Kevin Eberz, playing second base and batting leadoff, posted a .462 on-base percentage and was issued 12 base on balls, earning the free pass in nearly one-third of his at-bats.

On the mound, senior hurler Dan Barry has an impressive 0.71 earned run average to lead the team. He has allowed just one earned run in 12 2/3 innings pitched and is second on the team with 11 strikeouts. He has a 1-1 record and opponents are hitting just .220 off of him. Dan Bailey, also a senior, has a 3.86 ERA and has been the Saints hard-luck pitcher, getting the loss in two of the Saints three one-run losses.

St. Lawrence is scheduled to start their northern schedule on Wednesday, April 4, when they travel to Watertown to take on Oswego in a 6:00 p.m. game.
