SAINTS TAKE TWO AT UNION, 8-6, 9-6 April 9: Andrew Ford went six for seen and drove in three runs as St. Lawrence swept a Liberty League doubleheader against Union on Wednesday, 9-6, 8-6 to improve to 9-10 overall and 5-4 in Liberty League action. Ford was three for four in game one and Mike Root went five innings with six strikeouts for his third win of the season. Ryan Duff was two for four and drove in a run in the game.
The Saints jumped out to an 8-0 lead through three innings, scoring four in the top of the first and four in the top of the third. Duff hit the third consecutive single to start the game to drive in one run and after Charlie Cannan singled in a run, Duff stole home on a double steal. Ford singled through the right side to produce the fourth run of the opening inning.
Kirt Broedel singled in a run and the Saints picked up others on a passed ball and an error in the third. Union cut the lead to 8-5 with a run in the bottom of the fourth and four in the bottom of the fifth, but Steve Bodnar came on to earn the save, getting the final two outs of the game after Union had scored one run in the bottom of the seventh.
Ford went three for three in game two and drove in two runs and Tim Harris had a double and a triple as Chris Cook picked up the win in relief of Jeff Graceffo.
Union went up 4-0 in the first two innings of game two, but the Saints rallied with five in the top of the fifth. Harris hit a one-out triple to start the rally and Cannan singled him home after a walk. Ford then singled in a run, Broedel hit a sacrifice fly and Rob Tole hit a two-run double to give the Saints a 5-4 lead.
The Dutchmen came back with two in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 6-5 game, but the Saints responded again, scoring four in the top of the six for a 9-6 lead.
Harris led off with a double and Duff provided a sacrifice fly for one run, Christian Spicer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the second run, Ford hit a sacrifice fly and Broedel hit a run-scoring double.
Cook went two and two thirds inning of scoreless relief with one strikeout to earn his third win of the year.
