ITHACA SHUTS DOWN SAINTS AT AUBURN April 29:Senior Shane Wolf shut the Saint offense down on a six hitter through seven innings and 22 nd ranked Ithaca College went on to a 10-3 win over the Saints at Auburn on Tuesday evening.
The Saints, now 17-14 overall, face a big Liberty League series Saturday and Sunday, meeting arch-rival Clarkson with a Liberty League tournament playoff berth on the line. The Saints will play two at Clarkson on Saturday beginning at noon and host the Knights for two on Sunday, also at noon in the final games of the 2008 regular season.
Ithaca built a 6-0 lead with single runs in the top of the second and third and two runs in both the top of the fifth and sixth against Saint starter Sean Voss, who gave up ten hits and four earned runs.
The Saints scored three in the bottom of the eighth as two walks and an error loaded the bases and Charlie Cannan reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring one run with two others scoring on ensuing errors.
Ithaca put it away with four in the top of the ninth as Wolf delivered a two-run single.
Ryan Duff had two of the Saints’ seven hits in the game while Matt Skelly, Jeff Graceffo and Steve Bodnar also saw action on the mound.
SAINTS TAKE THREE OF FOUR FROM VASSAR April 26: St. Lawrence University’s baseball team swept a Saturday doubleheader at Vassar, taking three of four in the weekend series and moving into a tie for third in the Liberty League’s convoluted standings heading into the final weekend of the regular season.
The Saints, who won Saturday’s games 13-5 and 24-7, are now 17-13 overall and 10-7 in Liberty League play.
They are tied with Skidmore, 11-9 in league play, on the weighted standings system and are scheduled to play fifth place Clarkson in a four-game series next weekend which will determine the field for the Liberty League tournament.
The Saints pounded out 37 hits in the two games against Vassar on Saturday with Ryan Duff contributing six in the two games and Christian Spicer driving in seven runs in game two.
Troy Lassial earned the win on the mound in game one, allowing two runs and striking out four in six innings of work. The Saints led 6-1 through the fourth and put the game way with seven in the bottom of the sixth.
Andrew Ford went four for five, Duff was two for three and Joe Shehata drove in three runs in game one as Ford had a double and a triple and Matt Carrigg also tripled for the Saints.
The Saints had an 8-3 lead after three innings in game two, led 14-7 after six and put it away with a ten-run seventh, scoring 24 runs on 24 hits in game two.
Duff was four for five with four runs driven in and three scored while Spicer went four for five with three runs scored and seven driven in. Joe Shehata went three for five with two runs driven in in game two.
Mike Root earned the win with three earned runs allowed and six strikeouts while Matt Skelly and Zach Slater pitched in relief.
Spicer had two doubles and a triple while Duff had a double and a triple in the second game win .
SAINTS, VASSAR SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER April 25: St. Lawrence romped to a 20-3 win in game one of a Liberty League baseball doubleheader at Vassar on Friday, but the Brewers came back with an 8-3 win in game two to earn the split.
The Saints, now 15-13 overall and 8-7 in Liberty League play, will play the Brewers in a second doubleheader on Saturday.
Joel Kocan went five for six and drove in five runs in game one to lead the Saint offense while Tim Harris was two for three with three runs driven in and Charlie Cannan went two for two and drove in two runs.
Kocan hit two doubles, Kirt Brodel and Joe Shehata tripled in game one as the Saints jumped out to an 11-0 lead and cruised to the win. Steve Bodnar earned his fourth win of the year, going 5.2 innings, striking out eight and allowing one earned run.
Tyler Bellstrom held the Saint offense to nine hits and three runs in nine innings in game two as the Brewers gained the split.
Cannan had two hits and Shehata was three for four for the Saints with Jeff Graceffo taking the loss on the mound.
