COOK WINS FOURTH AS SAINTS TURN BACK HAMILTON, 8-2

April 16: Rookie pitcher Chris Cook earned his fourth win of the season allowing Hamilton College just two hits in five innings as St. Lawrence turned back the Continentals 8-2 in a non-league game at Tom Fay Field Wednesday afternoon.

St. Lawrence pulled even at 12-12 on the season while the Continentals are now 8-11.

Hamilton scored a run off Cook to open the first without the benefit of a hit as a walk, a passed ball and a ground out put Jack Maloney on third in the top of the first and Dan Hood hit a sacrifice fly to center to score the run.

The Saints came right back to tie in the bottom of the first as Tim Harris singled to center and after Andrew Ford walked, Harris stole third, scoring on a double play groundout.

SLU took the lead off Brendan Rafelsky, the second of five Hamilton pitchers in the game in the bottom of the second inning. Matt Carrigg delivered a two-run double to put SLU up 3-1 and the Saints picked up single runs in the bottom of the third on Christian Spicer’s run-scoring single and in the bottom of the fourth on Carrigg’s line drive homer to left.

Hamilton picked up its second run off Saint reliever Troy Lassial as a walk and an error put Michael Matt on third and Ryan Calabrese hit a two-out double to drive him home.

The Saints came right back to make it 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth as Joel Kocan singled, went to second on a balk, was sacrificed to third and scored on a passed ball and scored another run in the bottom of the seventh as Ford singled and Ryan Duff doubled him home. The Saints scored their final run in the bottom of the eighth as Chris Hewins walked with two out, Sam Kelly singled with Hewins moving to third and Hewins scored on an error as Kelly stole second.

Ford and Carrigg had two hits each for the Saints who used a pitcher an inning in relief after Cook went the first five. Five different players had hits for Hamilton.

The Saints will return to action Sunday with a home doubleheader against St. Michael’s. Hamilton is back in action Friday and Saturday at Williams.
