JACQUES AND ANDERSEN EARN TOP-20

FINISHES IN SLALOM AT WILLIAMS CARNIVAL

Feb. 16: First year student Thatcher Jacques and sophomore James Andersen posted top-20 finishes in the Men’s Slalom on Saturday at the William Carnival at Jiminy Peak, MA. The duo’s finishes helped the Saints to a 7th place finish in the event, while the women’s team, led by rookie Dana Cleason and sophomore Jennifer Kish, earned 8th place in the Women’s Slalom.

 

Jacques raced in a time of 1:36.69 thanks to consistent runs of 48.39 and 48.30 to land in 17th place, his career-best finish. The New London, NH native earned 17.0 points towards the carnival standings and 14.0 towards an NCAA Championship berth.

 

Andersen was next for the Saints’ men’s squad, two spots behind Jacques in 19th place. The Putnam Valley, NY native raced in a time of 1:36.90, earning 15.0 points. The team’s scoring was completed by sophomore Sean Mallia, who turned in a 29th place finish with a time of 1:51.18, lifting the Saints to 7th place overall with 40.0 points.

 

Other competitors for the Scarlet and Brown included junior Doug Brown, who narrowly missed out in the scoring with a 30th place finish (1:51.94) and sophomore Michael Nadolski (DNF) and Michael Wallman, who failed to finish his second run after an impressive first run time of 47.13.

 

On the women’s side, Cleason continued her impressive rookie campaign with a 24th place showing to lead the Saints. The Canandaigua, NY native raced in a time of 1:47.16 to earn 12.0 points towards the carnival.

 

Cleason was followed closely by Kish, who was .44 seconds behind in 25 th place overall (1:47.60). The women’s team’s scoring was completed in the slalom by junior Danielle LaCavalla, who chipped in 10.0 points with a 27 th place finish (1:47.68). The trio combined for 33.0 points for an 8th place finish.

 

Sophomore Meg Howard raced in a time of 1:48.60 and finished in 29th place overall, while rookie Heidi Robbins turned in a 33rd place finish (1:51.39). Senior Kristen Ehringer (34th, 1:51.47) rounded out the Saints’ women’s team’s line-up.

 

Colby’s Vincent Lebrun-Fortin was victorious in the Men’s Slalom with a time of 1:30.78, while Dartmouth’s Courtney Hammond won on the women’s side with a time of 1:35.89. Middlebury College earned the team title in the men’s event with a total of 78.0 points, three ahead of Williams, while the University of Vermont won the Women’s Slalom with a total of 87.0 points, three ahead of Dartmouth.

 

The 2008 Williams Carnival was won by the Dartmouth Big Green with a total of 617.0 points (Alpine and Nordic combined). St. Lawrence University finished in 8th place overall with 313.0 points.

 

The Saints’ men’s and women’s Alpine ski teams will be in action again next weekend, February 22 and 23, at the EISA Championships hosted by Middlebury College.

 

 

LaCAVALLA AND JACQUES LEAD SAINTS IN

GIANT SLALOM AT WILLIAMS CARNIVAL

Feb. 15: The St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s Alpine ski teams opened competition in the Giant Slalom at the 2008 Williams Carnival on Friday at the Williams Outing Club. Leading the Saints were first year student Thatcher Jacques and junior Danielle LaCavalla, who guided the men’s and women’s teams to 9th and 8th place finishes, respectively.

 

LaCavalla was the top Saint finisher in the Giant Slalom on Friday, racing in a time of 1:50.73. The time landed the New City, NY native 13.0 points towards the carnival and 1.0 point towards the NCAA Championships.

 

First year student Dana Cleason and sophomore Meg Howard completed the women’s team’s scoring on Friday, as the pair finished in 36th and 41st place, respectively. Cleason, who has had a very solid rookie season, finished in a time of 1:53.47, while Howard clocked in with a time of 1:55.18. The trio of LaCavalla, Cleason and Howard combined for 33.0 points to land the team in 8th place overall.

 

Also competing in the Women’s Giant Slalom for St. Lawrence were sophomore Jennifer Kish (43rd, 1:55.96), first year student Heidi Robbins (46th, 1:57.63) and senior Kristen Ehringer (48th, 1:58.25).

 

Meanwhile, Jacques continued his impressive rookie campaign on Friday with a 31st place showing in the Men’s Giant Slalom. The New London, NH raced in a time of 1:45.11, netting 12.0 points towards the carnival standings. He was joined in the scoring by junior Doug Brown and sophomore Michael Wallman, as the three combined for 25.0 points for the 9th place finish. Brown finished in 44 th position behind a time of 1:49.86, while Wallman was one spot behind in 45th place with a time of 1:50.30.

 

Rounding out the Saints’ line-up on the men’s side were sophomores James Andersen (DNF), Sean Mallia (DNF) and Michael Nadolski (DNF 2nd)

 

The University of Vermont swept the team victories in the Giant Slalom at the Williams Carnival, with the Catamounts’ women’s team earning 95.0 points and the men’s squad tallying 89.5 points. Lyndee Janowiak also represented UVM well, winning the Women’s Giant Slalom with a time of 1:43.09. On the men’s side, it was Williams’ Charles Christianson narrowly edging out Sean McNamara of UNH for the individual title with a time of 1:39.43.

 

Both the Saints’ men’s and women’s squads will be in action on Day Two of the Williams Carnival, tomorrow, Saturday, February 16 as the squads compete in the Slalom.
