MALLIA FINISHES 15th IN SLALOM ON FINAL DAY OF 2008 SLU CARNIVAL Jan. 19: Sophomore Sean Mallia recorded one of the best finishes in his collegiate career on Saturday in the Men’s Slalom on the final day of the 2008 St. Lawrence University Carnival. The Weston, VT native finished in 15th place overall, only .01 second behind New Hampshire’s Ethan Weibrecht for 14th place, as both the Saints men’s and women’s teams finished in 8th place in the event.
Mallia was rewarded 17.0 points towards the carnival for his time of 1:26.98, including an impressive 2nd run time of 41.99 seconds. It was the sixth top-20 finish of Mallia’s short career with the Scarlet and Brown.
Also scoring for St. Lawrence in the men’s slalom were sophomore Graham Flinn and first year student Thatcher Jacques, who finished in 25th and 26th place, respectively. Flinn earned 9.0 points with a time of 1:32.37, while Jacques was next with a time of 1:32.87.
Sophomores James Andersen (31st, 1:35.92), Michael Wallman (34th, 1:46.04) and David Slungaard (35th, 1:47.42) also competed for the Saints on Saturday.
Meanwhile, sophomore Megan Howard and rookie Dana Cleason were the top finishers for St. Lawrence’s women’s alpine ski team in the slalom. Howard finished in 21st place with a time of 1:36.13, while Cleason was just behind in 22nd place (1:36.91).
Senior Kristen Ehringer completed the scoring for the women’s team with a 30th place finish behind a time of 1:46.41. The trio combined for 30.0 points to earn 8th place in the team event. First year student Heidi Robbins narrowly missed out on scoring for the host school, as she finished in 32nd place with a time of 1:47.97.
Also competing on the women’s side for the Saints were juniors Danielle LaCavalla and Marina Chiasson, though neither was able to complete their first run.
The men’s slalom was captured by the University of Vermont with a total of 80.5 points, though Middlebury’s Andrew Wagner won the individual crown with a time of 1:23.96. The Catamounts also won the women’s slalom with 85.0 points, with one of their skiers, Lyndee Janowiak, winning the individual title (1:28.35).
Dartmouth College won the 2008 St. Lawrence University Carnival with a total of 587.5 points (Nordic and Alpine scores combined), while the Saints finished in 8th place overall.
The Saints will have the upcoming week off from competition before returning to action the follow weekend, February 1st and 2nd, at the UVM Carnival in Stowe, VT.
MALLIA PACES SAINTS IN GIANT SLALOM TO KICK-OFF 2008 ST. LAWRENCE CARNIVAL Jan. 18: The 2008 St. Lawrence University Carnival began on Friday morning, with the Saints playing host to nine other institutions in Lake Placid, NY for the second event of the carnival season. Both the Saint men’s and women’s Alpine ski teams finished in 8th place in the Giant Slalom on Friday, with totals of 24.5 and 31.0 points, respectively.
Sophomores Sean Mallia and James Andersen paced the Saints’ men’s squad on Friday, as each earned a top-25 finish. Mallia raced in a time of 2:05.83, good enough for 24th overall, while Andersen was a spot back behind his teammate by .02 seconds (2:05.85).
Fellow sophomore David Slungaard completed St. Lawrence’s scoring on the men’s side with a 34th place finish behind a time of 2:13.74. Slungaard’s classmate, Michael Wallman, finished in 40th with a time of 2:23.89.
Sophomore Graham Flinn and first year student Thatcher Jacques each posted first run times that would have them competing for a top-25 finish, but neither was able to complete their second run.
Meanwhile, junior Danielle LaCavalla paced the Saints’ women’s squad behind a time of 2:13.38, good enough for 26th position overall. Rookie Heidi Robbins and sophomore Megan Howard completed the team’s scoring with 30th and 31st place finishes, respectively. Robbins raced in time of 2:16.62 compared to Howard’s time of 2:17.88.
First year student Dana Cleason made her collegiate skiing debut on Friday for St. Lawrence in the Giant Slalom, finishing behind Howard in 32nd place with a time of 2:17.95. Also competing for the host institution on the women’s side were junior Marina Chiasson (36th, 2:20.43) and senior Kristen Ehringer (40th, 2:24.89).
The University of Vermont won both the men’s and women’s Giant Slalom with totals of 70.0 and 82.0 points. The Catamounts’ men’s squad narrowly defeated Dartmouth College by two points. Meanwhile, the individual championships went to Charles Christianson of Williams College on the men’s side with a time of 2:01.65, while Dartmouth’s Courtney Hammond won the women’s title behind a time of 2:03.69.
The 2008 St. Lawrence University Carnival will conclude tomorrow, Saturday, January 19, with the Alpine teams competing in the Slalom beginning at 9:30am.
