FLINN AND ANDERSEN EARN TOP-25 FINISHES IN FINAL EVENT OF 2008 Feb. 23: The St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s Alpine ski teams competed in the final event of the 2008 Carnival season on Saturday at the EISA Regional Championships. Sophomores Graham Flinn and James Andersen recorded top-25 finishes in the Giant Slalom at the Middlebury Snowbowl, helping the Saints’ men’s team to a 7th place showing.
Flinn was the top St. Lawrence finisher in the Giant Slalom, finishing in 21st place with a time of 1:59.43. The Jericho, VT native earned 29.0 points for the Scarlet and Brown, while Andersen was one spot back in 22nd place as he finished with a time of 1:59.61.
Sophomore Michael Wallman rounded out the Saints’ scoring on Saturday with a 30th place finish for 23.0 points. The three skiers combined for 80.0 points for a 7th place finish.
Also competing for St. Lawrence in the Men’s Giant Slalom were first year student Thatcher Jacques (33rd, 2:02.47), junior Doug Brown (36th, 2:03.40) and sophomore David Slungaard (40th, 2:07.31).
Sophomore Meg Howard was the top skier for the St. Lawrence University women’s team with a 29th place finish. The Shelburne, VT native raced in a time of 2:07.02 for 25.0 points towards the carnival standings. Junior Danielle LaCavalla (33rd, 2:08.56) and senior Kristen Ehringer (35th, 2:09.91) completed the Saints’ scoring, as the trio combined for 70.0 points to land in 8th position overall.
First year student Dana Cleason narrowly missed scoring for the Scarlet and Brown, as she finished in 39th place with a time of 2:11.57. Senior Elizabeth Karam (45th, 2:13.99) and junior Marina Chiasson (DNF 2nd run) also competed in the Women’s Giant Slalom.
Middlebury College was the big winner on the men’s side, as they won the team event with 126.0 points and Andrew Wagner won the individual title for the Panthers with a time of 1:55.53. The University of Vermont won the Women’s Giant Slalom with a total of 122.0 points, and Jilyne McDonald represented the Catamounts well with an individual victory (2:00.31).
Dartmouth College won the 2008 EISA Regional Championships/ Middlebury Carnival with a total score of 928.0 points. St. Lawrence University finished 8th out of 15 schools with 595.0 points (Alpine and Nordic combined).
The 2008 EISA Regional Championships is the final event of the season for both the Saints’ men’s and women’s Alpine ski teams. The NCAA Championships will be held March 5 through March 8 in Bozeman, MT.
CLEASON AND ANDERSEN LEAD SAINTS IN SLALOM AT 2008 EISA CHAMPIONSHIPS Feb. 22: The St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s Alpine ski teams began competition at the 2008 EISA Championships hosted by Middlebury College at the Middlebury Snowbowl on Saturday. Both squads finished in 10th place overall in the Slalom, with the women’s team earning 55.0 to the men’s team’s 53.0 points.
First year student Dana Cleason continued to shine in her rookie season with the Scarlet and Brown, as she was the women’s team’s top finisher in 27th position. The Canandaigua, NY native raced in a time of 1:46.14 for 22.0 points. She was joined in the scoring for St. Lawrence by sophomore Meg Howard and senior Kristen Ehringer in the event, with Howard in 29th place (1:47.37) and Ehringer ten spots back in 39th position (1:51.40).
Senior Elizabeth Karam made her competitive debut for the Saints on Friday in the Slalom, finishing in 48th place with a time of 2:05.68. Junior Danielle LaCavalla (57th, 2:02.62) and junior Marina Chiasson (DNF) rounded out the team's line-up.
On the men’s side, sophomores James Andersen and Graham Flinn joined with first year student Thatcher Jacques in the team’s scoring. Andersen was the team’s top finisher in the slalom, racing in a time of 1:37.26 for 34th overall. Flinn was two spots behind in 36th place with a time of 1:38.11, while Jacques came in 46th after being clocked in at 1:43.24.
Junior Doug Brown (52nd, 1:49.29), sophomore David Slungaard (57th, 2:05.31) and sophomore Michael Wallman (DNF 2nd run) also competed for the Scarlet and Brown.
The Men’s Slalom was won by the University of Vermont with 120.5 points, only 2.5 ahead of Middlebury College, while the individual title was won by Williams College’s Charles Christianson (1:30.39). The Catamounts were also victorious in the Women’s Slalom with 126.0 points, with the team’s Lyndee Janowiak winning with a time of 1:37.35.
The Saints will be in action again tomorrow, Saturday, February 23 at the EISA Championships when they compete in the Giant Slalom.
