TRIO OF ROOKIES IMPRESSIVE IN SLALOM

AT 2008 DARTMOUTH CARNIVAL

Feb. 9: First year students Dana Cleason, Heidi Robbins and Thatcher Jacques had impressive showings on Saturday in the slalom at the 2008 Dartmouth Carnival, as the trio of rookies helped land both the St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s Alpine ski teams 8th place finishes in the event.

 

Cleason and Robbins were the top two finishers on the women’s side for the Scarlet and Brown, combining for 29.0 points on Saturday. Cleason raced in a time of 1:51.91, including an impressive first run time of 52.21, for 29th place overall while Robbins was one spot back in 30th place with a time of 1:53.99, only .08 seconds behind.

 

Junior Marina Chiasson completed the women’s team’s scoring with a 33rd place finish in the slalom. The Burlington, VT native raced in a time of 1:54.35, earning 12.0 points towards the carnival total.

 

Sophomore Meg Howard (44th, 2:07.03), junior Danielle LaCavalla (DNF 2nd run) and senior Kristen Ehringer (DNF 2nd run) also competed for the Saints’ women’s squad.

 

Meanwhile, Jacques had a solid 28th place showing in the men’s slalom, earning 14.0 points for his time of 1:40.60. The New London, NH native was the team’s second finisher, as sophomore Sean Mallia narrowly beat him out by .14 seconds for 27th place overall (1:40.46).

 

Sophomore James Andersen completed the Saints’ scoring with a 31st place finish, earning 13.0 points towards the carnival and bringing the team’s total to 42.0 points.

 

Other St. Lawrence competitors in the men’s slalom included sophomores Graham Flinn (37th, 1:58.63) and Michael Wallman (DQ 2nd run) and junior Doug Brown 46th (2:20.11).

 

Dartmouth College ’s Courtney Hammond led the Big Green’s women’s team to victory in the event with 97.0 points, as Hammond won the individual title with a time of 1:45.32. Middlebury College was victorious on the men’s side with 95.0 points, while Williams’ Charles Christianson earned the individual crown (1:33.14).

 

The Big Green also managed to win their home carnival with 725.0 total points, while St. Lawrence finished in 8th place overall with 375.0 points.

 

The Saints Alpine teams will be in action again next Friday and Saturday, February 15 and 16, at Jiminy Peak in Hancock, MA for the 2008 Williams Carnival.

 

 

MALLIA AND LaCAVALLA ARE SAINTS'

TOP FINISHERS IN GIANT SLALOM

Feb. 8: Both the St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s Alpine ski teams took 8th place overall in the Giant Slalom at the 2008 Dartmouth Carnival on Friday. Sophomore Sean Mallia paced the men’s team with a 25th place finish, while junior Danielle LaCavalla was the top finisher on the women’s side in 29th position.

 

Mallia’s time of 1:56.83 landed the Weston, VT native 18.0 points towards the carnival and 6.0 towards the NCAA Championships. It was his fourth top-25 finish of the 2008 carnival season.

 

Completing St. Lawrence’s scoring on the men’s side were sophomore Graham Flinn and junior Doug Brown. Flinn raced in a time of 1:58.80 for 11.0 points in 37th, while Brown followed in 42nd place and grabbed 10.0 points (1:59.75).

 

Sophomore Michael Wallman narrowly missed out on scoring for the Saints in the Giant Slalom, finishing a spot behind Brown in 43rd place (2:00.30). Sophomore James Andersen (DNF 1st run) and rookie Thatcher Jacques (DNF 2nd run) rounded out the team’s line-up.

 

On the women’s side, LaCavalla’s time of 2:04.53 paced the Saints, as she picked up 17.0 points for a 29th place showing. The New City, NY native was followed by a pair of first year students, Heidi Robbins and Dana Cleason, who completed the team’s scoring at 46.0 points. Robbins took 31st place overall with a time of 2:05.77, while Cleason was five spots back in 36th place (2:07.96).

 

Also competing in the Women’s Giant Slalom for St. Lawrence were senior Kristen Ehringer (49th, 2:22.21), junior Marina Chiasson (DNF 1st run) and sophomore Meg Howard (DNF 1st run).

 

The Men’s Giant Slalom was won by the University of New Hampshire with a total of 97.0 points, while Williams’ Eric Mann (1:54.23) won the individual crown. Dartmouth’s Courtney Hammond was the winner of the Women’s Giant Slalom with a time of 1:58.52, but her team finished second to the University of Vermont in the team event.

 

Both the men’s and women’s Alpine ski teams will be in action again tomorrow, Saturday, February 9 in the Slalom to complete the 2008 Dartmouth Carnival.
