SLALOM AT BATES CARNIVAL

Jan. 12: The St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s alpine ski teams kicked off their 2008 carnival season on Saturday, as the Saints competed in the slalom at the Bates Carnival hosted at Sunday River. Sophomores Sean Mallia and Megan Howard were the team’s top finishers, as each landed in the top-25.

Mallia seemed to pick up where he left off last season, when he became one of St. Lawrence’s top racers. The Weston, VT native raced in a time of 1:35.00 for a 20th place finish and 11.0 points towards the NCAA Championships. It was Mallia’s fifth top-20 finish of his collegiate career.

Also scoring for the Saints’ men’s squad in the slalom were sophomores Graham Flinn (29th, 1:39.31) and Michael Nadolski (42nd, 1:57.39). The trio of second year athletes combined for a total of 32.0 points to land the Scarlet and Brown in 9th place overall.

Also competing for the men’s team in the slalom on Saturday were sophomore James Andersen, who did not finish his first run, and rookie Thatcher Jacques and sophomore Michael Wallman, who each failed to finish his second run. Jacques and Wallman, however, each had promising first run times of 46.98 and 46.70, respectively.

Meanwhile, though Howard was the top finisher on the women’s side for St. Lawrence, she was closely followed by junior teammates Marina Chiasson and Danielle LaCavalla. Howard raced in a time of 1:49.85 for 24th place overall, while Chiasson (25th, 1:53.17) and LaCavalla (26th, 1:53.17) took the next two places. The trio combined for 45.0 points and 7th place overall.

Senior Kristen Ehringer narrowly missed out on scoring for the team on Saturday, as she raced in a time of 1:53.98 for 28th place overall. Each of the two St. Lawrence rookies making their collegiate debut on the women’s side did not qualify, as Heidi Robbins failed to finish her second run and Kelly Skinner was disqualified on her second attempt.

The men’s slalom was won by Middlebury College with a total of 87.0 points, while the individual title went to Dartmouth’s David Chodounsky with a time of 1:30.86. Middlebury picked up a sweep in the event by winning on the women’s side with a total of 88.0 points, but New Hampshire’s Veronique Archambault-Leger won the individual crown behind a time of 1:36.46.

Sunday’s slate of action will bring the conclusion of the 2008 Bates Carnival, as the alpine ski teams will compete in the Giant Slalom at Sunday River. Both the Saints’ men’s and women’s teams will be in action at 9:30am.
