SAINTS TRAIN AT MT. TREMBLANT

Nov. 30: The Alpine Ski Team hit the slopes in Mt. Tremblant with 11 men and six women for an eight day ski training camp. Four days were spent on skiing fundamentals and two days on tactical gate training and the final day with GS race simulation and time trials.  Senior Nick Gush was fastest for the men and junior Hannah Kreizel was fastest for the women.

The snow was adequate at first and then excellent at the end with colder temps and additional snow making.  The last day the team actually trained near full length GS on the FIS racing hill, the same hill they will compete on in three weeks.

The team stayed in Le Johannsen Condominiums about 50 yards from the lift and had daily afternoon conditioning sessions for athletic recovery and a "Turkey Bowl" football game on Thanksgiving day, which Coach Pier's team won! (first time in 4 years.) The team had two 20lb turkeys with all the fixings for Thanksgiving dinner.

All in all, they had a great trip and returned to campus on Saturday afternoon following our early moring training session.  The team plans to ski at Whiteface this week and next and have their first FIS races at Val St-Come in Quebec on Dec. 11th and 12th as warmups for the collegiate season.

SAINTS READY TO HIT THE SLOPES

The leaf colors are exploding on the St. Lawrence campus and Jack Frost has already placed his cold fingers on the highest mountains of the Adirondacks! It may still be Hurricane season in Florida, but in the North Country the smell of fall is in the air and we are gearing up for what will prove to be our best winter in years. The hard work and sweat equity put in by this year’s Alpine Ski Team members is expected to pay huge dividends.

Junior Co-Captains David Rothman and AJ Puccia have been leading the team through plyometrics, core body workouts and lifting sessions in “captain’s” practices until our official team start of October 18. Rothman is expected to be a top 15 carnival threat in both GS and SL this year. With his change of equipment to Atomic Skis (Bode’s new Brand) this year and two years of collegiate racing under his belt, he is showing the confidence expected in a leader. Puccia, a self proclaimed SL specialist, also looks very strong this year after spending a semester abroad in London, England. Last season was cut short by severely frozen feet, but this year look for AJ to be among the top 15 in SL and also be a consistent scorer for the team in GS. The team expects big things from First Year standout Jared Furnia, the Eastern Alpine SG Champion. Jared is currently ranked nationally 23rd and 93rd in GS and SL on the USSA points list, following outstanding final season results in last year’s Slush Cup where he bested a few US Ski Team Athletes. 2004 Rookie of the Year Eric Morgan gained tremendous experience on the carnival circuit last year as a sophomore, placing in the top 30 four times. If the success Eric had during the final events of 2004 is any indication, we will be very happy with his results this year. Junior Brendan Levine has spent the entire summer “down under” studying abroad in New Zealand and has skied well at races in the Southern Alps. “B” is anxious to return to the States this fall with his improved ranking and show us all the value of skiing in the off-season by ripping up the slopes this season. Nick Gush, our lone senior, is also a top 15 threat in SL giving us a realistic chance to place all three of our weekly scorers among the top group. Rounding out the Men’s Alpine Team this year are junior Karsten Jennings, a two time Academic All-American and First Year Students Mike Nichol from Ford Sayre Academy, Gabe Cohen and Dan Rihm from the Stratton Mountain School and western transplant Nick Calandra from Squaw Valley, California.

Junior Captain Abigail Copeland heads a talented group of young women skiers on this year’s team. Also a standout on the Field Hockey Team, Abi has the competitive spirit and knowledge of what it takes to place among the top 15. We expect to see her as a regular among this year’s Eastern Elite and would not be surprised to see her on the podium at a race or two. Our most consistent performer in 2004 was junior Hannah Kreizel, also a multi-sport athlete who plays on the Women’s Tennis Team. She earned three top 18 and seven top 25 results last year in SL and GS and has her sights set on making the jump up to the top 15 and the NCAA Championships at Stowe, VT. Newcomer Carling Delaney, Copeland’s teammate on the Field Hockey Team, is expected to be an immediate contributor to the Alpine Team. The Holderness School Graduate stepped on the podium a lot in 2004 including a 3rd place finish at Cannon Mt in an Eastern Cup FIS event. Carling has the talent to be in the top 10 on the carnival circuit in both GS and SL. Sophomore Erin McDermott showed great promise last year with a top 15 finish in early season FIS racing, but had her season cut short due to injury. After skiing well in the Golden Rose Slaloms last Memorial Day weekend on Mt. Hood and getting some additional confidence and snow time on the Horstman Glacier in Whistler, BC this summer, Erin will prove to be a major contributor to this year’s team. Sophomore Sarah Lauridsen also arced some turns in Whistler this summer and we expect her to take the experience of skiing in all six carnivals during the 2004 campaign to make consistent leaps up the result sheet from the two top 26 SL finishes she earned at the Dartmouth and UVM carnivals last year. We hope to keep the services of sophomore Kaitlin Guendelsberger, who was a top 20 skier for the team last winter but is trying to rebound from a summer car accident and off-season knee surgery. To complete our 2004-05 Women’s Alpine Team we welcome First Year students Meaghan Cahill from Berwick Academy, Maine and Kristen Ehringer from the Killington Mountain School. All of our skiers hope to see and ski with you on the slopes this winter, so………

Let’s go Saints!!!!!!!!!!!!!
