Sanford “Sandy” Schram '71

Sanford “Sandy” Schram’s career has been about helping others.  A Bryn Mawr Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research professor, his scholarship and activism are concentrated on reform of the social welfare system in the United States.  He has testified before Congress on welfare reform, and his published research on welfare migration was used before the U.S Supreme Court. At Bryn Mawr College, he teaches courses on social theory and policy.  Sandy is the author or co-editor of seven books, and he has published extensively in distinguished journals.

“To whom much is given, much is expected” –this admonition from the New Testament applies as a universal truth.  Sandy Schram has been gifted with a prodigious intellect, insatiable curiosity, and indefatigable work ethic.  He has given much.

A government major and member of the Class of 1971 at St. Lawrence, where he was also active in student government, Professor Schram earned his M.A. and Ph.D. at SUNY Albany. St. Lawrence University recognized one of the foremost scholars among its alumni by awarding him a 2008 Alumni Citation.
